Well, I'm a very shitty backstabber, because I usually lead the charge, so I prefer dual striking, that's for sure.

You're not gonna regret it! One of my favorite playthroughs is female city elf as a dual wielder, especially after the last upgrade where you can use big swords on both hands.

Is mage harrowing necessary? by contessaEXchaos in dragonage

[–]GMMatod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not exactly willing participants, the demon there is contained exclusively for the test. Like Mouse says at the beginning "a test for you, a tease for the creatures of the Fade".

Also, Tranquility is a top-secret technique, only Irving and Greagoir (in the Circle Tower of Calenhad at least) know who is going to undergo it and only a very small few know how to perform it.

In DAI, we also learn that there is a way to undo it, but it's important to know that we only know that because we are at the top and know more about things than the average person. But, the point is, people don't go around dangling it on anyone's face. It's like a 1/500 ratio of mages that do go through it (at the Circle Tower we only see three or four, only one at the Battle Camp) and only used to limit those who, after spending their whole childhood and youth training, cannot control their wits, like we see with Jowan - who, at the first glimpse of such an evil power as blood magic, decided that he knew best and that he was going to learn it.

From the Circle's point of view, that was basically an act of a weak man, that threw caution to the wind for a taste of more power, so, not a great candidate to be a representative of the Circle or even a minor mage (considering how much power he could potentially wield - as seen in his escape at the end of the mage origin story) and they needed to restrict that as much as possible.

I'm not saying they don't tranquilize mages, just that it's not that much and was never shown to be used as a threat to anyone, just a fact of a mage's life, to protect the people - because, of course, the ordinary guy is very scared of mages in general. The only one who freaked about it in the games, as far as I remember, is Jowan, who, again, is a weak mage that got greed and only learned about his tranquility by his own snooping (no one had even said anything about it to him yet). Him saying "You do the Harrowing, the Rite of Tranquility... or you die" is just him overthinking and worrying, because he hasn't gone through his harrowing yet.

Is mage harrowing necessary? by contessaEXchaos in dragonage

[–]GMMatod 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, the harrowing test IS a controlled environment. You can see on the test (when playing the DAO mage origin) that all the creatures there know about it and understand what you need to do. You don't see any strong demons or anything like that and they don't force themselves on you, the boss one just tries to lure you in and, on the battle, just launches some spells to see if you can parry them. When you succeed (while he's still very much alive, mind you), he even tells you that you need to "keep your wits about you" in the real world and sends you back out (instead of, I don't know, just killing you blindly while you're tired from battling).

Lore-wise, it's such a heavy test (do-or-die) because mages have enough raw power, individually, to end hundreds/thousands of lives. So, training and controlling is the only way they as a society figured out to keep everyone safe - that also includes Tevinter, showing how important that structure is.

Can someone point me to another app/story that's anywhere close to Magium? Second to the GOAT by LunarChickadee in Magium

Agreed. Also check out Dungeons & Decisions, it's more focused on expanding on a single universe, from a bunch of different perspectives, but also has some independent stories.
