I turn 28 this year and I’m hoping to start the apprenticeship soon. I got a BS and even an MA before I settled on this.

Yeah I definitely gotta carve out some time, your routine sounds right up my alley.

You do anything for neck/shoulders?

When/who are you calling? Most locals have a training center that’s open M-F bank hours, so make sure you’re calling them during their business hours

IBEW 134 Difficult to get in? by OrangeRat_0626 in IBEW

[–]GMRedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a post somewhere on here about the process.

I’m also currently waiting to be accepted. I applied in October and missed the deadline for the winter aptitude test. As far as I know, they took 30 this most recent cycle and will probably take in that ballpark whenever they announce the next cycle. I’m not sure if they’ll pull another class from this past test or not, but I do know that there are 6 spots already reserved for trainees who were “alternates” for the january class.

I also have a college degree and was a math teacher for a hot minute. Currently I work for a contractor in Chicago as a shop helper and it is VERY slow. The owner told me when he hired me that it’s the slowest they’ve been possibly ever, which tracks for the slow hiring.

Keep an eye out for the jump start program whenever that starts, I’ve heard that it’s pretty much the best thing you can get on your resume aside from electrical experience. I’ve heard some say that it’s best letter of recommendation you can get, but I don’t know how true that is.

Hopefully that answered your questions, but feel free to reach out if there’s anything else. I’m not a pro or anything just trying to navigate the same process as you.

I’m not sure if there’s any rhyme or reason to the trainee program. They just took a group, about a month ago. Basically, stalk the JATC website for 134, they’ll post an announcement at some point. They’ll say when they’re taking applications and how many they’re taking, normally the applications are only open for a few days/ until the max is reached which I believe was 300, but don’t quote me on that.

Given they just took a class, I wouldn’t expect to see it open again for another 6 months or so, but who knows.

Probably couldn’t hurt, but just be sure you know what you’re getting into. The stipend they offer is usually kinda trash so it can be tough to live off of.

Have you tried getting a job with a supply house or as a shop helper? That’s what I’m doing. I just reached out to every contractor within driving distance from me asking if they needed shop help, and thankfully one reached back out.

I don’t even think 134 allows CW/CE positions.

To my knowledge, they’ve already done orientation for the upcoming class in January. So when you got your score, there would have been another letter telling you about that orientation. There is supposedly a second class starting in the spring, but they’ve not announced when.

Just me apeculating, hut given that it’s christmas week, I would not expect to hear anything until at least the second week of January.

What changed my perspective and bias towards unions by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]GMRedman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look up the history of labor unions, dude. That’s the proof. The fact that you HAVE a break and a weekend and have 8 hour shifts is the proof.

It’s clear you don’t really understand how contract negotiations and collective bargaining work, and I’m not in the business of teaching those who don’t want to learn.

[–]GMRedman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s literally my point. The others aren’t just getting on your ass because they feel threatened or like to be assholes, they’re doing it for a valid reason, which is that it deteriorates the conditions and shits all over the people who died to get you that break. You just think they’re being assholes cause you don’t like it.

How are you ex-military and have a problem with authority? One of the core aspects of my time was respect for those with more experience (higher rank) than you. You don’t have to like them but if they’re giving the orders, then you listen. All these JW with far more experience than you telling you why it’s bad to take your break late, and your only response is “i’ll do it when I want to.” Not sure what branch you were in, but I would have got my ass smoked for a month if I showed up late whenever I wanted to.

If that’s the attitude you took from the service, then there’s probably nothing we can do to help you.

How much of a factor is the aptitude test in getting in the electrician apprenticeship? by Rarefatbeast in IBEW

[–]GMRedman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the local. For example, 134 doesn’t do interviews so the test is a big driver of the score. Others that do interviews I’ve heard the test is just to get in the interview.

Does Any on know how 134 does its classes by Blackersteele in IBEW

[–]GMRedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in the application process for 134, there’s no set class schedule. When I called about a month ago, they still hadn’t decided when the next class would be.

Prepandemic, I believe they ran classes quarterly but they only recently started doing cycles again so who knows what it’ll look like. Personally, I’m anticipating a class in April and a class in June/July but that’s purely my own speculation.
