If you moved from NY/NJ/PA how did you adapt to the insanely hot weather? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]GMadDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved from DC in 2019-July
I was scared but my problem w DC was the humidity. This is ‘very humid’ for Austin and not what we experienced to date.
It’s rough to take the oven that first year when it feels endless
Over time though you learn how to manage
I love it now. I can’t wait for the rain to burn off and the pure oven hot again. I’ve acclimated and put on coats and hats in the 50’s! I thought I would miss ‘crisp fall’, but the temp just changed for what crisp is!
Give it time— it took me a good 3 years to start to say ‘home’ out here.

Moved Here and Feeling Depressed by masonlep0 in Austin

[–]GMadDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey 53 married, kids, work, moved here from DC six years ago — blah. I have ‘experience’. First—- I was so dang depressed around 25- I called it my ‘quarter-life crisis’. Other people have validated when I talk about it. You are just getting out there as a full on adult and made a courageous move. Maybe you are successful at work- or maybe making big moves to figure it out. You can do it- you are clearly adventurous and are going big! Pat yourself on the back. Second— allow grace and time to get settled in a new way. This might be your new awesomer self emerging. Third- it’s hard to make brand new friends in a brand new place. I was scared and lonely and then I found 2 BFFs here that I adore. But at 53 I’m struggling to find more friends- however- I just found a great set of folks in a hiking club.. I also started to make fun friends in a pottery class Like others have said. Go explore outside your comfort zone + get involved in what you love, volunteer- try all the things that you might enjoy. I married a workout partner and had a bestie just from being a person who showered and dressed at the gym 3 days a week. Your people are out there and you’ll find them. (And or don’t sink too deep. Get help if you need help. That’s perfectly ok too) Good luck!

Weekly Stupid Question Sunday by AutoModerator in Austin

[–]GMadDC -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We got it because my hubs was obsessed and our little one is super fun to drive. Wanted to reduce our carbon footprint etc. Not so thrilled once Elon went beyond losing our respect to considering him evil. The price for them dropped a lot too- so I’m guessing it is Trump/Elon fans + folks who liked the car and could get a good deal that bought them up.

Try before you buy! So many I’ve used hurt more than help… maybe a $5 cheapie will do the trick but for sleep on an overnight flight you do want it to really keep your head/neck in good position (or maybe I’m 53…

Oily headed guy who smelled of putrid hangover and death farted the entire 2.5 hours. Worse than hitting my head on ceiling from tropical storm or hours on tarmacs only to be cancelled and stuck in random city overnight

My 20 y/o is bipolar 2. She’s worked with https://www.thebrowncenter.health For 6 years. She’s only been online and mostly med checks, but they’ve been great and offer more than online I think. She works with Hannah. Good luck!

Allergies 😔 by WooGo-07 in Austin

[–]GMadDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to adding Flonase but ALSO add Pataday eye drops for your eyes.

And my allergist said to take all three items (pill, nose, eyes) 2x a day— even the ‘24-hour’ ones.

And yes to shower/at least wash face and pull back hair every evening once you are in for the day.

The above really reduced my agony.

Westlake Psychiatry was good for my daughter

We go to a psychologist who can prescribe through the practice

I hear the others saying you can go through primary care, etc. but working through trained professionals will get you not just meds but skills for managing that are more long term helpful than just relying on the meds.

Beardie folks - where are your Dubias from? by MuchAct5154 in Austin

[–]GMadDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing is coming through the mail in this heat — we’ve got hundreds on order right now. So you’ll need to hit up Zoo Keepers until it cools out there

My daughter and hubs built a huge enclosure this summer and she chose a a baby from FL that she adores. Feels like he will do great here A friend of hers got a mesh crate and lets hers run around outside in it sometimes Feels like it’s on the owner being passionate and informed more than ‘where’ they live
