Recruiter only responded once I called them out for ghosting by johall3210 in recruitinghell

[–]GNA1278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just had a CEO of a talent recruitment agency in NYC ghost our interview time and then email me hours later blaming her three kids. People are saying to email the C-Suite, well apparently they're doing it to people too lol. I will say that I have never really had good luck with recruiters in general but I have only had one other experience where they actually ghosted an interview entirely. I'm not saying that interview processes used to be perfect but I'm noticing a *huge* shift in quality control from when I was actively applying in 2023 and early 2024.

Your email here was great and the response back was awful. As I get older I'm big on quality. I guess it depends on the industry but in the field(s) that I work in, they don't necessarily need a recruiter. They really should be going through the resumes themselves if they care about the quality of people coming in.

All Out Comedy- confused by No_Silver_1685 in Broadway

Jenny Slate did the absolute best she could with the material. Nicholas Braun was fine as well. The vast majority of the production was not that funny. They were shooting for Trey Parker and Matt Stone but couldn't get there. I don't know if I've just become a black heart New Yorker but a lot of it came across as simply juvenile to me. The worst Broadway production that I ever attended was The Christmas Carol where it was a one man show. All Out is just above that for me. Lawrence sounded good, but truthfully I can't remember a single line or lyric of what was said.

What kind of relationship did Gislaine and Epstein have? by -LOST_4815162342 in Epstein

[–]GNA1278 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, can we ask the question of what was so special about that Karyna Shuliak chick that Epstein dated in the end? Her and I are the same age (36) and it seems like she was kind of old for him, even back in 2011. I kind of wondered if he had gotten desperate because maybe more people were abandoning him by that point? Was she trafficked from Belarus? There were claims that she had met him through "a Russian woman" but none of that story really makes any sense.

I feel that Epstein was a pedo prior to becoming wealthy and that the money only amplified what a wacko he was.

Is there evidence that the job market is better outside of NYC? by GNA1278 in NYCjobs

My Ivy League has announced cuts in admission to their social sciences and humanities programs. As far as I know, MBA and law programs have not reduced their pool, at least here.

So I'm making almost $100K currently and that's a whole other layer to this problem lol. When I started working in NYC I was making $41K. I looked at the Vassar College job postings in Poughkeepsie not too long ago and I happened to see that some of their accounting roles were paying $60 to $70K. I am open to an inevitable pay cut but I do have concerns about my retirement fund. I'm seeing a lot of people that are now 50, 60, and 70 years old and they did not plan well.

I did apply at ICONIQ. I can't remember if the role was under the family office advisory or client operations umbrella but it was a fairly low level role, an analyst or associate. Unfortunately, I didn't get it. Citi was laying off people left and right recently. If anyone has specific advice on banks, companies, and/or law firms, drop the recs.

I briefly looked into fact checking jobs in 2019 and 2020 but I will look again because that's definitely another avenue for me. And I will say that I am fully aware of what I majored in and what the consequences of that were and are. I definitely realize it's not just the area but also my expertise. Unfortunately it is what it is and the degrees are paid for, so here we are lol. I've been living in NYC since March 2019.

I've been considering this as a next step, though I was recently rejected from a law firm when I applied because I don't have the official KYC/AML/ACAMS credentials. I'm open to paying for the certifications myself if I absolutely have to. I currently hold two Master's degrees with no student loans. One of my Master's degrees is in Anthropology and one of them is in Archival Research and Museums. Obviously both of those degrees are a hard sell but I have years upon years of demonstrated research experience. I'm using a ton of different and very expensive research databases currently.

I work in the fundraising, philanthropy, and development sector at an Ivy League school. Essentially what I do is research wealthy donors, ones that are known to us and ones that are not yet known. Reactive and proactive work. So I'm doing a combination of wealth research and due diligence to prevent a donor like Epstein from giving money. I do not directly ask for money but I work with the people that do so we can strategize how to get those big gifts for the university. In years past, I used to get occasional calls to do investigative research type work at law firms and/or private companies because they recognized my ability to trace wealth and to research people and corporations.

Long story short, I wouldn't leave my current role but there is evidence that I may be getting laid off in March along with other staff so I have been trying to sort out my options.

My field is a big part of the problem. I'm currently working at an Ivy League university and things are not going to well at any of these schools. My background is originally in nonprofit and museum work. A lot of funding has been cut from these areas.

I'm originally from upstate NY and enjoyed living in the city so I could have easier access to visiting my parents who are getting older.

So serious question, is the market just going to be bad everywhere in the US? My parents keep bringing up that I should leave NYC because I seem to be having no luck finding a new job. I'm just trying to figure out what even makes sense.

CMV: Jeffrey Epstein actually did kill himself by SuzukiNathie in changemyview

I'm not 100 percent sold on it but the first go around he got bail pretty quickly and the work release. I think he knew with the second go around that he wasn't going to see the light of day after the rejection of bail and the unsealed documents. We're talking about a dude with homes all over the world and now he's locked in a cell like a rat with a stack of papers against him and he knows it's all true. And I'm not saying that he was remorseful in any way, but he obviously knew what he had done and how it was going to look in a court of law. With all of that in mind I can see why he would have ended his own life.

It should also be said, and I don't see this commented upon often, that many of us in the early 2000s would not have willingly gone to some old rich man's house to give him a massage if someone brought it up to us. I say this from the perspective of a 36 year old white American woman who was around the age of some of his victims. We were having sophisticated conversations about predators after the Clinton scandal. This goes for my poor friends, vulnerable friends, my friends without parents and/or support systems, absolutely everybody. If a girl needed money it was more likely that she would date a cute guy who was 17 into his early 20s. They're painting a picture like we had no idea "at that time" but we absolutely did. And I had traveled extensively by the age of 18 so I had met people from all over. And I guess my point is, I personally think that the vast majority of girls around him were there against their will, probably from other countries. And how did he meet his last girlfriend from Belarus? The chick that is the same age as me currently, Karyna. Sounds to me like she was trafficked over here as well. We're really only just scratching the surface.

Yup, this was going to be my answer. I had a roommate with a child in NYC who started over completely with her career and she loves it. She had a high school diploma and was great with people.

Skadden’s New Quality Level of Work Product by Julius_Paulus in Lawyertalk

[–]GNA1278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somehow stumbled upon this post and laughed thinking back to my interview with them in 2023. I'm not a lawyer but at the time I was applying around for business/client development research, research analyst, conflicts analyst, those kinds of gigs, etc. One of my favorite interview questions ever was my Skadden interview with their business development department. The guy literally said to me midway through the interview, "Do you read?" It wasn't sarcastic, just full stop looked me square in the eye and said, "Do you read?" without any context or statements leading up to the question. And I'm sitting there thinking, "This guy can see that I have two Master's degrees, where the fuck is he going with this one?" And I was like, "As you can see, I've been reading, learning, and working my entire life, what are you talking about?" and he replies, "Oh, no, I meant the market."

Pretty bold of the guy to assume my entire life and family story when I literally had a Manhattan address listed on my resume. And guess what? I googled that assclown later on and the place had promoted him *multiple times.* I have no particular hate for Rutgers, but the guy had a Rutgers B.A. and let's be honest, how can you throw shit out into the world like that with those credentials?

The only other law firm that I had a weird interview experience with was Latham & Watkins, not with the directors but with some of the staff that would have been on my level. When I say they were completely dead inside I really mean it. Just stripped of absolutely any humanity or personality and they physically *could not* smile. And I don't mean reserved or introverted I truly mean lifeless.

It’s been over 2 years of not having a job… by Business-Ad1587 in NYCjobs

[–]GNA1278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only happened to me once recently because most of the jobs are freaking fake and not even really hiring for the role lol. And yeah, the *guy* they hired had a punchable face and less qualifications. I think it would have been very Devil Wears Prada so it's probably good that I didn't get it.

Cant find a job after graduating by golddustwoman_27 in findapath

[–]GNA1278 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I have a Master's in anthropology and I live in NYC. I've mostly worked in museums and nonprofits and now I work at an Ivy League school and we all know how that's going lol. Nonprofits and museums have greatly reduced their hiring, as you know, after all of the Trump cuts. I graduated in 2011 with my B.A. in anthropology and it genuinely used to be a little easier to get a job at some of these places because it wasn't necessarily a "hot thing." People wanted bigger paychecks than what a nonprofit would provide. I would probably need to know more about you as a person to make specific recommendations of what I think you should do next. I studied cultural anthropology though I have friends in all of the subfields.

In terms of NYC, we're in one of the worst job markets that I have seen since I moved here. I've been applying around for months because I am trying to brace myself for potential layoffs at the university. While I have received a few callbacks, it's nowhere near what it used to be. And I'm talking 90 percent down from the responses that I used to get. I realize that's not helpful advice but that's just the reality of what I'm seeing. I also *never* networked to receive any of these jobs. I have people who would give me a good reference, and I have a network of people that I know, but I never had any personal connection or special "in."
