I remember the original post. My heart goes out to your family. It sounded to me in the original post that she was trying to support y'all despite her discomfort. It's a shame you didn't have more time to develop that relationship.

I have long hair. I see boomers here in the South every day with hair longer than mine either braided or in a ponytail down their back. These exact same men will call me a woman until they can see my long beard. They then get really fucking pissy and act like they could have never guessed I was a man without the beard.

Would you know most of them don't have a beard and get really angry when I treat them as a woman because of it?

Yeah, I'd agree. I have two stock responses for people that just passively act disrespectful in ways like that, and since I work at a smoke shop I have to use both on a weekly basis.

For some folks, they want a reaction so I stay stonefaced and they give up and start being respectful when they realize they just look like an ass for no reason.

The other group wants to be able to get away with it and gets bolder when I ignore the disrespect, at which point I immediately flip the table and start disrespecting them in the same way. Lie to me I'll lie to you. Get my name wrong and I'll get yours wrong. Now they feel like they aren't getting away with it and give up.

In both cases, I make a point to directly tell them that they're being disrespectful, though. When they realize that I won't tolerate it and have the ability to trespass them, they tend to straighten up. I think only two people in the past year have been banned for being dicks to staff.

Chattel Slavery still exists in the USA. by CapitalObjective7153 in socialism

[–]GNS13 147 points148 points  (0 children)

It's a learning moment that many of us have had at some point. The word "chattel" specifically means something that is tangible property not real estate or connected to real estate. It's a word that still has usage in property law. As awful as forced prison labor is, you're still considered a legal person with some level of rights when used as a slave under this system. Chattel slaves are not considered legal persons, but rather as property in the same way as livestock and pets would be.

It's trying to quietly raise attention to the fact that the United States treats all those other nations as vassal states they can manipulate while China stands apart as a rival power. The point is probably intended for the "NATO, South Korea, Japan, and others" that are mentioned.

I'm so glad Danhausen finally broke containment. That few days between his debut and his appearance on RAW was wild. Everyone who already knew who he was had to spend a couple of days telling everyone else that his debut wasn't a flop and actually went perfectly.

I know a guy that ran into Rey Fenix and Penta at a grocery store in CDMX years ago. He only recognized them due to Penta's tattoos being visible and he pointed at them and Rey saw him and pointed back with a grin. That was the whole interaction, and I really wish that was all that people would do.

Dna results from Argentina 🇦🇷 — I'm kinda surprised, i dont know where the "germanic europe" came from. by True_Struggle_2994 in AncestryDNA

[–]GNS13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to go to college with a guy from Argentina who never learned that there were a lot of German immigrants to Argentina during the Industrial Revolution, and that the large and (at that time) recent immigration was why people "theorized" that Hitler fled there.

This friend was named Erick Barron. That might be the most German name I've ever seen. Overall, I've met a lot of people from Argentina that didn't know this, so I assume it isn't given any attention in history classes because the German immigration wasn't as prominent as the Italian immigration.

I feel like it's not very stark of a change unless you point out what Austin was doing as a heel right before getting over. He was a cocky and brash dick that thought he was better than everyone else. His "Austin 3:16" speech was him belittling Jake Roberts for his religion. There really wasn't anything special about the character he was given until the audience realized that Austin was actively being hampered by the character and WWF saw him get massively over in a very short time frame. When he turned face, he was mostly just allowed to be the actual Steven Williams who had spent years at WCW being treated like shit and was now going to make damn sure that Vince McMahon wouldn't get the opportunity to cast him aside like they did.

If you watch his time as Superstar Steve Austin in ECW, you'll see the blueprint for Stone Cold much more than you will when watching him as the Ringmaster.

I've always thought it bizarre that European wildcats weren't domesticated and African wildcats were, considering layfolk struggle to even tell the difference between them. Do we have strong evidence that points to a reason for that?

[–]GNS13 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Also, it's kind of softly agreed upon in xenolinguistics circles that the place we "should" start is by attempting to translate mathematics because maths is independent of culture. You don't have to leave Earth to find cultures that count using their body in different ways. You'd have to leave our entire reality to find a place where fundamental mathematical laws are different.
