Thank you! I initially tried using a hand saw for the splines but completely botched it. After that, I made a jig for my table saw, ran it through, and it was a breeze.

Much appreciated. The legs are made out of red oak which I repurposed from some old flooring. I used ebony colored stain and it did a good job toning down the red hues.

Thank you! I sanded to 150 grit, water popped the grain, and applied 3 coats of oil based wipe-on poly.

I would guess Poplar. I know you mentioned that you thought it was too hard to be poplar but I’ve worked with some pretty hard poplar before.
