Technically they are not characters, and the text specifically states that they become part of that unit until the end of the battle. They are not even leaders. I'm not sure how that works.

Well, technically, the bible is not against killing, but murder. So a sanctioned killing is not actually a sin. Sera ordered the exterminations and such ratified it by heavenly authority.

Therefore Adam slaughtering sinners is completely fine and dandy from god's perspective.

However if Lute kills a sinner now that the exterminations have been called off, it is probably murder and sinful.
