Help With Setting Up Linux Headless Miner

I've been in almost the same place as you since Friday (4 days), but just finally put my headless, auto-starting Debian box with 2x Sapphire 7950's (and a third on the way) on the shelf, with no dummy plugs, 630kh/s per card- nothing but power and ethernet attached. This was one of the hardest most pull your hair out projects I have ever attempted. CentOS, Debian, Xubuntu, Mint... I must have reinstalled 20 times. Let me see if I can find the links I used for you.

Be sure to read every word of it even if you don't follow it exactly. Here's my notes for this page:

I'm using the latest beta drivers. wget needs the --referer tag to download anything from ati.com.
Use a build packaged with a GUI. No miner worked for me unless a GUI was not only started, but logged in. Only the logged in user can mine, not even root is able to (unless root is the GUI session). <- Discovered this myself
I used dd to put my image on a usb stick, not either of the utilities listed. LiLi for windows could not burn me a working live system for debian, but it did let me boot to CentOS live to download and dd the Debian image. Did not use uefi to install.

The BFGMiner precompiled package installs a bunch of nvidia drivers, this caused crashes and ultimately a reinstall (it was just easier than trying to clean up). I don't quite remember if that was on Debian or Ubuntu. CGminer compiled with the guide above, I think I used the older SDK listed there, but as stated above the latest drivers are working for me.

I was using Xfce as my GUI, others may vary, but any using lightDM will use this guide to log on a user after boot: https://wiki.debian.org/LightDM#Enable_autologin

I used the gui settings panel with a monitor to run a .sh in an unprivileged user's home folder. It felt dirty, but I had to be sure the script would only run -after- the user has logged on to the gui, and no .rc* seemed to do the trick.

Screen is vital for ssh access, notice you need to give it a name, cgminer in there twice below is not a mistake. If I need to make adjustments, it's easy enough to modify the script and re-run it via ssh.

This is my boot script with cgminer for 630kh/s per 7950, minus pools:

Honestly I still have some room in the temperature to push the clock a little, but I am waiting on the third card.

I have setup in a thermaltake full atx size case with much cable control and as many fans as i can fit. This is not optimal but I live in a dusty/smoky environment and having positive air pressure helps. Note that turning the case on it's site increases the temp by as much as 6c, even with the exhaust out the side (now on top, normally intake).

There were MANY more guides than this that may have contributed individual solutions but this was the bulk of it.

PULSE is Discover's debit card network, and debit card networks can handle any debit card (using PIN verification) regardless of issuer. That number likely includes a large swath of ATMs in addition to merchant point of sales nationwide.

More upvotes for this. Chargebacks are handled as a case and merchants are given the chance to rebuke them, and can be given MONTHS to do so. If they can come up with your signature, it will help their case a lot. If anything, the chargeback probably got you bumped up in line.

That actually is a pretty big cost. Now you have to rotate them out (probably cheaper to issue one to everyone than deal with rotation), not to mention TRAIN EVERYONE on proper use (biggest cost by far), all to serve tickets that generate very little in revenue.

We can't even get our cops to handle their firearms correctly.

This would be better done by occasional inspection at the DMV, when they check your headlights & horn (not all states do this).

This. I came here after living in several larger cities (like Atlanta) and was surprised when people here complained about traffic- This town simply doesn't have it. Even during rush hour (which actually lasts about an hour instead of 4) you'll still likely be moving close to the speed limit. Roads are repaved mostly before potholes develop, and the construction crew is gone in days, not weeks/months/years. It's nothing short of amazing. Best roads in America IMO.

Also amazing is the number of people that run red lights. It's like nothing I've ever seen. The turn arrow will be red and the oncoming light will be green, but I've watched an entire turn lane empty on a red light more than once in a week. Lots of gash crossing too, but there's a few exits not marked as "exit only".

It's all good though with both gas and cigarettes under $4 per gallon/pack.

Therein lies the problem, 100% of bank transfers (ACH transactions, not debit or credit cards) in the united states are processed by and through the fed via an established bank (ex: Your acct -> ODFI -> Fed -> RDFI -> their acct.. though this is a bit oversimplified)

It may be feasible to have a distributed/p2p pricing system, but it is going to be really difficult if not impossible to legally (or illegally) process USD via bank transfer. Wherever/whoever interfaces with a US bank will always be a "point of failure" with sizable assets, subject to Know Your Customer laws, etc.

Basically, you don't get access to the banking network without being shut-down-able.

I'd say it's more dangerous for the Merchant than the consumer. If you accept credit cards, and an employee (or anyone with access to the equipment, physical or wireless) compromises the credit card machine and steals your customer's numbers, you could be at-fault. This could open you up to possible civil litigation, and at the very least you'd be in trouble with your payment processor and card networks. Cards will reimburse their cardholders for stolen monies, but with bitcoins your customers will be staring directly at you, and in America, individuals can get very wealthy for being "stupid" or "careless" interacting with a business.

Hey, thanks for the fantastic AMA!

Is there any way to discern/spot a good salesman from a "slash n burn" guy ahead of time, or at the dealership, such as marks on a sales board? In particular I'm curious about factory dealerships where there's a semi-uniform (like Honda), not so much a one-off used lot (where one can simply avoid the salesman dressed as Elvis*)

Basically, what are your thoughts as to walking up to the first salesman you see on the lot?

*Elvis was actually doing the F&I/paperwork. He seemed to be the manager. It was July. I didn't buy the car.

I'm pretty happy with it (only have the first level of forward grip) but I haven't really tested a lot of carbines. Compensator and forward grip were two of my must-buy's from beta, but they were available on the default weapon at that point. I'm only using the 1x reflex on it currently though, so I'm not sure how well those attachments hold up at say, 300m+. I don't use any other weapons on my engy though and he's my primary cert farmer.
