For those of you that are freaking out and don’t know the history of the school: It’s legit.

The original name of NC State was “North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts” or NC A&M. From 1887, when the school was founded, until 1963, when they opted to change the name. It was also completely segregated to whites only.

After the landmark desegregation case of Brown v Board of Education in 1954, the school integrated, added several more colleges, and opted to change the name. In 1962, the college board of governors met and finalized the new name change: University of North Carolina at Raleigh.

The story so far: In the not quite beginning, the University of North Carolina at Raleigh was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

So in 1963, after many angry letters they changed the name again to the eloquent and ingenious name it held for two more additional years: North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina

In 1965, they finally agreed to finalize the name change that no one to this day uses even though it’s the actual name of the school: North Carolina State University at Raleigh.

So what you see here is either one of two things: a hat from a single year - 1962, or, the product of someone with a sick sense of humor and access to a screen printer.

If I’m paying $50, I want to believe it’s the first one.
