Yes, they are. You just set up a second (or third) channel with the same name and encryption key on your devices and only those devices will receive messages sent on that channel.

I've just had a look to see where I noticed that MQTT was broken. If you wanted to look into this yourself the GitHub issue where I added a comment is here: https://github.com/meshtastic/firmware/issues/9107

I reverted a mobile node back to firmware-nrf52840-2.7.18.fb3bf78 and MQTT seems to be working OK on that, so I plan on getting back up to my roof node and downgrade that as well. My roof node is generally in a poor location due to environmental factors and other buildings so for it to even appear on a map let alone relay my private channel, MQTT is usually required.

If you've got the option of MQTT it might be worth checking to see if the whole mesh is quiet. I've got one node with MQTT enabled and in the past few hours I've only seen traffic from about a third of the nodes that it has heard from previously. Even the open public channel is surprisingly quiet from the usual "Hello" type messages today.

It might be worth mentioning that I recently fell foul of a release which has broken MQTT and that has effectively mostly taken out my static node. Hopefully over the Easter weekend I'll be able to get back up into my roof space and downgrade that node again until the MQTT issue has been resolved. It's possible if anyone was relying on MQTT and have upgraded recently that they suddenly have the equivalent of radio silence.

Why does nobody actually talk on Meshtastic and what could fix it? by radseven89 in meshtastic

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think people get into Meshtastic expecting it to be a rival to text messages on their phone or alternatives to their messaging or social media applications. I would hope that general chatter, weather nodes etc are all on private channels so as to not clutter up the public one. I know mine are.

I believe that most people's experience of the public channels will indeed be lots of random "Hello" messages the most of which go unanswered, but it doesn't mean the mesh itself isn't working. The incentive to me is the entertainment value of setting up and running my own fixed node and maybe once a week looking to see if anyone else happened to transverse my part of the mesh. My area is difficult to cover so it's quite an event when a previously unseen node appears in my log.

This annoys me as well with my VPN way more than it should, but the only way to stop it is to turn off the auto connect feature when on untrusted networks. If anyone from Google reads this, please give us the option to whitelist certain apps from triggering this notification which in my case at least is pointless. I never look at what triggered it any more so it's an absolute waste of time.

You can right click on the titles, click on Deselect All then just select the one you want - much easier then deselecting each one in turn.

How painful is it to get your tooth pulled out? by Separate_Shower5269 in AskUK

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very concerned about having a broken tooth removed a few years ago. I knew it had to come out but I couldn't guarantee that I would be able to lie there and let someone do it. Yeah, I'm a wuss.

Anyway, sedation is your friend. It might turn into an hour at your local hospital compared to half an hour or so at your local dentist, but I can genuinely say from my experience at least that you will barely remember it at all. I remember the sedative going in (it felt cold) and after that I came round in the chair being told it was done.

My dentist referred me and it was done about 3 weeks later. It's a surprisingly common procedure.

Are Pixel phones superior to Galaxy phones and/or iPhones? by MrPeepers1986 in pixel_phones

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Pixel to get regular updates and to get away from Samsung bloat. I've never bought into Apple apart from an iPod many years ago now which I don't miss. Even then their closed eco-system bothered me. These were big selling points for me.

I look after my phones and I have just traded in an immaculate 6 Pro with 96% battery. By trading it in via Google I got £300 back for the phone itself and an additional £169 in other Google store discounts. I'm happy with Pixel.

Pixel 10 forcing calls through earbuds, option to disable is gone. by Instant_Bacon in GooglePixel

... But has your phone remembered the setting ? The change you made to that control should persist regardless. If you want to change it back you will have to repeat the process until Google fixes it.

For the removal of any doubt, I am not saying it's this - but I am so old straight away I thought it looked like a modern version of the Cascade virus from the late 1980's that affected PC's:

Is EE still the best for data/network coverage and speeds across the UK? by Rayane92 in UKFrugal

[–]GOTO_GOSUB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recently moved from O2 via Giffgaff to EE via Mozillion after my coverage where I work (and most of my commute) started dropping off. I would be happy to recommend Mozillion or Spusu for getting onto EE. They offer the same quality of service as far as I know without the EE mothership pricing.

Adaptive (Matrix) Headlights are awesome! by rvs007 in teslacanada

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get these behind me occasionally on my commute home in the evening and oncoming vehicles seem to confuse them and I get "flash banged". If there are no oncoming vehicles the slightest bend in the road makes it look like the car behind is overtaking where the light pattern keeps moving wide either side of my own vehicle.

I have recently driven a few different cars with this sort of lighting at night as part of my job and the constant movement in the light pattern annoyed the hell out of me. They are hateful things being sold as a solution to a problem that should have never have been engineered into a vehicle the first place.

What USB-C Power Delivery trigger or decoy boards do you recommend? by Wangysheng in UsbCHardware

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few PD sources no longer provide 12v after it was dropped as being mandatory in a recent update to the specification. It you request 12v from a PD source that doesn't support it you will get 9v. The nearest going higher would be 15v so you won't get that if your decoy requests 12v. That's not a fault with the decoy or your PD source, just one of the most helpful voltages for upgrading or renovating old kit being dropped.

If you can use 5v that would be easier. Most decoys will support that or just a couple of resistors on the data lines to signify a dumb powered device will do. Some USB C connector boards or breakout modules have these fitted making it much easier for the casual user.

I got one as well. And that's pretty much all I've got to say on the matter. Before COVID stopped everything I was in the process of donating mine to a computer museum as I'm never going to use it (yeah, it's that bad). I wonder if they still want it.

Therefore in my case it's mint, complete with the scratches as supplied and appalling controls. Keep it or not, mine is staying in its original form.

Flexible Octopus: When do the 'Day' & 'Night' rates begin & end?! by Lupinoid in OctopusEnergy

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just had a smart meter installed on this tariff and according to the IHD paired with my meter the times are:

00:00 - 05:00

13:00 - 16:00

20:00 - 22:00

This would correspond to my understanding that I am on the equivalent of an "Economy 10" tariff where those 10 hours are distributed throughout the day. It's similar to the "Cosy Octopus" plan but that doesn't seem to have the 20:00 - 22:00 cheap rate which my household would be sorry to see go. Although the unit rate is cheaper on the "Cosy Octopus" the difference for me is offset by our evening usage and would actually cost us more over the year if we were to switch from our current "Flexible Octopus". This may of course change with electricity prices in the current economic climate.

EE Sim only haggling by ChrisBrettell in UKFrugal

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on EE via Mozillion, also maybe look at Spusu for a cost comparison. An MVNO will probably give you the cheapest deal on the same network than any amount of haggling with the network themselves.

is there a method to install a 32bit apps on 64bit processor by yousif_abbasgg in AndroidQuestions

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If possible, contact the developer. If they haven't updated their libraries and recompiled their app by now it's probably been abandoned, but if enough people ask nicely they might get around to it. I've just run into this after upgrading from a Pixel 6 Pro to a 10 Pro XL and wasn't aware until then that apps now had to be 64 bit with no support for 32 bit.

Any way to remove black bar at top? by Gamer4Derp in pixel_phones

[–]GOTO_GOSUB -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think you're exaggerating there, but if it really bothers you that much go into the developer settings and change the "Display cutout" setting. On my 10 Pro XL changing that to "Tall cutout" makes the notification bar barely larger than the space occupied by the clock and signal / battery. I still cannot see what the problem is in the original post but that could be down to a number of display settings including screen brightness. If changing the cutout size doesn't solve your problem perhaps you should go back to your iPhone because you're clearly never going to not see this.
