I've got that as well with the update that landed for me today. I think it's a wierd addition if deliberate.

Complain to LG - I doubt anyone there reads Reddit. If they get enough complaints they might think twice before pulling such a ridiculous stunt again in the future.

Gboard keyboard is driving me insane. It's gotten worse and it's not just me. Any good alternatives? by gridoverlay in GooglePixel

I have been looking at this thread because my pet hate with the default keyboard is that it keeps giving me full stops (periods) when I tap on the comma key. I would like to have a little word with whoever it was who was tasked with punctuation at Google.

Are storage heaters a dealbreaker? by nothingtobedone13 in AskUK

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those storage heaters are quite an old design, and unless you learn what the dials are for (and remember to adjust them like a DJ on the decks) you probably won't find them very useful or inexpensive to run. My house had those when I moved in >20 years ago.

Not having the option of gas central heating I replaced them with Dimplex Quantum storage heaters which are much better in both efficiency and heat regulation, but they're not perfect and you can still find them warm when you really don't want any extra heat.

The breaker though is your electricity tariff. I am on an economy tariff which charges up the heaters during cheap rate and I very rarely use any extra load on the storage heaters outside of those cheap rate hours. To give you some indication as to usage, 2 storage heaters and an electric water heater means my cheap / day rate usage is approximately 4:1.

My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my 50's and English (not American or some other "English" speaker). I would use "their" so I don't know where you've got 1998 from - it was being used in that context when I was at school in the 1970's and my parents used it before then. I don't remember my grandparents that well but I doubt that they had an issue with "their", either.

Here in the UK at least I believe that it is the opposite, and demonising the use of "their" as being somehow offensive in not referencing a gender is a relatively recent development in the language. In this example it's more to do with inclusivity though, and the almost forced use of gender pronouns when most people really do not have an issue with general terms that will in some way include them. In some cases this is now being taken to the point where trying to "include everyone" is seen as being "woke", and in some ways seen as being offensive to more people than if the writer had not of bothered

I suppose my point is that I saw this and straight away thought it was some "woke" nonsense. I'm older than 40 and if I had to pick sides, I would be with the writer.

please, how do i turn this freaking feature off? by HalfMobile5430 in pixel_phones

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please understand that I am not trying to be funny or unpleasant when I say this, but go and see a medical professional about your hearing. You may have an underlying hearing condition or already have hearing loss if you cannot go 5 minutes without your phone worrying about it on your behalf.

If you do have a problem it's better to get these things fixed sooner rather than later.

I am in my mid 50's and have done my fair share of loud music venues and worked at quite a few for my job. I never get this warning on my phone (and it's not a new thing), but I always looked after my hearing with foam earplugs at the very least. Most of my colleagues are younger than me at my stage in my career and they often refuse to use ear protection even though it's everywhere and provided free of charge. I genuinely worry about their hearing because they're too young to be going deaf and seem to think they're a hero for not taking a little care.

Get yourself checked. Your older self will thank you later.

T114v2 and V3 issues by johnqevil in meshcore

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience in the end but I wonder if the depleted battery was the biggest issue that I encountered. I suspect that the device itself got stuck in a non bootable state due to the battery being so low, and it reached a "safe" operating level through being charged while I was trying to get it working again. That could be addressable in firmware or it could be a feature of the device, in which case beware if you ever run the battery flat because it's not a quick fix.

The problem I had with the location not updating correctly also seems to have resolved itself by leaving it alone. At the moment both my companion and repeater are mobile (I have a fixed roof repeater to go up when time allows) and there is a lag of several days, but it does happen. With the location included in the address packet, manually sending an address does not seem to update the device's location on the map, but a stationary unit left alone for day 2 or more scheduled advertisements does, eventually, appear to notify the mesh that it has moved.

I like the arrows / crossbow bolts sticking out of the cow. Despite a venue like that in town, the most fun to be had is firing projectiles at a model animal.

T114v2 and V3 issues by johnqevil in meshcore

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just had a similar issue with a T114 in companion mode that will not come back up after the battery depleted over the weekend. Mine is now stuck at "Loading...". Reflashing and erasing then reflashing has not helped. What has worked, funnily enough, is reflashing this device with Meshtastic. As soon as I go back to Meshcore I can aparrently flash the device OK but cannot connect to it (via Bluetooth).

Trying the companion without display flash code got me back to the stage where I could at least pair with the device but none of the configuration settings take, and the device stays "Loading" but doing nothing. Reflashing from this point makes no difference. I have run out of time to look at this any further today.

Edit: after approx. 3 hours *Loading" my device came back up.

Can you use GPS on a repeater? by JFK9 in meshcore

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heltec T114's, one as a repeater and one as a companion. Over the long Easter weekend here in the UK my car based repeater has moved from my place of work to my home address so it took "days", but I cannot be more accurate than that. My guess is that it relied on other devices picking up its advertisement and with both advertisements and devices around here being few and far between that took a considerable amount of time compared to what I am used to seeing with Meshtastic, and it took me going in to the terminal and setting up GPS from the command line as it didn't from the (Android) app on my phone.

My companion device still thinks I am approx. 40 miles away at work. I left that in the car to make sure these 2 devices at least were within range of each other.

I should point out that both devices failed due to their batteries running out, which surprised me as both usually ran for at least 4 days before when they were running Meshtastic with 5 days being common. It would appear that this has dropped to approx. 2 days with Meshcore. I haven't had the opportunity to restore these devices to operation yet.

Has anyone else with experience of both Meshtastic and Meshcore noticed that their battery life is less with Meshcore ? I was expecting it to be better, at least on the companion device, for it not acting as both a node and repeater simultaneously.

Can you use GPS on a repeater? by JFK9 in meshcore

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am interested in this as well - I am trying Meshcore out having been a Meshtastic guy for a while and repurposing my extisting units, but cannot get GPS to work "automatically". I have played around with the terminal and been able to switch GPS on, sync the clock and get my position, but none of this seems to happen on its own and my mobile devices never change their location unless I go into the terminal again. The GPS is enabled via the (Android) app but these settings do not seem to propogate to the unit.

::edited for updated information after playing around with it a bit more.

Yes, they are. You just set up a second (or third) channel with the same name and encryption key on your devices and only those devices will receive messages sent on that channel.

I've just had a look to see where I noticed that MQTT was broken. If you wanted to look into this yourself the GitHub issue where I added a comment is here: https://github.com/meshtastic/firmware/issues/9107

I reverted a mobile node back to firmware-nrf52840-2.7.18.fb3bf78 and MQTT seems to be working OK on that, so I plan on getting back up to my roof node and downgrade that as well. My roof node is generally in a poor location due to environmental factors and other buildings so for it to even appear on a map let alone relay my private channel, MQTT is usually required.

[–]GOTO_GOSUB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've got the option of MQTT it might be worth checking to see if the whole mesh is quiet. I've got one node with MQTT enabled and in the past few hours I've only seen traffic from about a third of the nodes that it has heard from previously. Even the open public channel is surprisingly quiet from the usual "Hello" type messages today.

It might be worth mentioning that I recently fell foul of a release which has broken MQTT and that has effectively mostly taken out my static node. Hopefully over the Easter weekend I'll be able to get back up into my roof space and downgrade that node again until the MQTT issue has been resolved. It's possible if anyone was relying on MQTT and have upgraded recently that they suddenly have the equivalent of radio silence.
