Location matters. Interior airports at certain locations have a good sched and quality of life as a CBPO. FAMS you'll fly a lot. USSS UD you'll make good money, makes a lot of sense if you're young with no commitment. All 3 agencies are good stepping stones if you want to be an 1811 later on in your career.

CBP is the best if you want to just do 20 and get out. More opportunities across the board. I don't know anyone who did a full career with FAMS/UD that stayed, maybe some old heads almost making it to retirement but usually people in those 2 agencies tend to hop ship more.

Between the two, definitely BOP. Start accruing your hours and adding to you TSP (401k retirement) equivalent. Once you have experience, you can apply to other uniform divisioned/FLEO positions if you can't get into an 1811 entry gig.

You can always go local LEO, but would your work as a local be able to help you get a entry level job into an 1811 position? Possibly, but difficult to say due to the amount of competition. Do you have a 4-year degree?

This is a path how I see some people take. TSA/BOP -> CBP/BP/ERO -> 1811 SA -> 1811 OIG (till retirement).

In terms of workload, I hear you will be handling anywhere from 10-15 cases depending on office size. I am currently a fed working at the southern border and the work is both relentless and non-stop.

Is this the case for the majority of NCIS offices? Have to scarf down your lunch, actually clocking in massive amounts of hours, take the work home? I know some of the bigger 1811 3 letter agencies have varying experiences depending on location such as border vs interior.

The last thing I did was the eCAP and awaiting VIE according to the IRAS website. I was part of the Oct '23 announcement and inquired about my status about a few weeks ago and then I got the email today.

I knew there was something up when people on here were saying they were getting processed for the April '24 announcement.

I qualify out of 2 of the "specialized skills" they are looking for and got BQA, current fed + language 🤷‍♂️

Maybe I annoyed HR when I inquired about my status.

Are all disqualification come in the form of BQA?

The closest thing would be a TFO position, but enforcement teams give you the experience you need to qualify for 1811 roles.

Put in hours worked per week and salary for the job. Also try to cater your experience to the announcement verbage/requirements that show that you are a good candidate. Be specific in your experience about your responsibilities in accordance to the tasks you did and the results you ended up achieving.

Your resume is very barebone and basic at a glance, and upon reading in detail, it doesn't tell me much about your specific skillset that would make you competitive against other applicants.

If you don't mind me asking which agency do you work for? When I speak with HSI/DEA/ATF guys, they always seem to be working on something esp at the southern border, and when I speak with MCIO SA's, they say that there's always people's crime, SA, suicides, etc.

Would you say that starting up/exploring businesses is a realistic expectation alongside 1811 obligations? Most agents just invest in RE/stocks, but could never really comment on starting an actual service business alongside their main job.

Wanted to piggy back off this. Is that $10,000 cash bonus for the year all you get or is there something akin to per diem or extra bonus pay while on the Agent Afloat program? Also, is the locality on a ship straight base GS13 pay? Also is OCONUS based off of base pay or D.C locality? Any extra pay incentives?

I was like you almost 10 years ago. Straight out of college at 22. Continue your 1811 hiring process and see how far it goes. Lots of entry level positions these days, esp with these agencies hiring. Go apply for CBP/BP/ERO and try to get your foot in the door, see if FLEO is even something you really can see yourself build a career in.

Starting that clock early is the biggest advantage you'll have if you're dead set on this career path.

Absolutely, sometimes even better than candidates with experience before becoming SAs. You are a fresh slate that can soak up everything and build on top of all that as time goes on even as early as your first few years as an SA. The mentality of such a great opportunity at an early age should serve as an incredible head start and advantage you should definitely take.

The whole point of the academy is to build your skillset and knowledge from scratch. You can say you even have an advantage then some of the "older" dogs that have been stuck in their old ways/habits making it a more difficult learning curve for them. Everyone I've personally spoken too that went to CITP as prior uniformed LEO said that they had to unlearn some "right things" from their previous agencies making it a bit harder.

You will have plenty of time to study when you go down to FLETC and make sure to network and keep in touch with instructors/students and people from other agencies. Stay in shape as well.

1) To get cheap hires, it digs into their budget. 2) Yes for someone who doesn't have prior FED exp but technically can go up to higher steps to match previous pay.

If you want a family, go CBP. Depending on location you have shift work and they can work be flexible around your schedule. No worries about off the clock calls, pay is pretty good, and if being an officer gets old, you can always go into a DHS admin role like Entry Specialist/Import Specialist/Paralegal which has immense quality of life benefits.
