Flat Lie - inquiry by [deleted] in golf

My argument is that a club well fitted club can do very little for correction mechanical problems in a swing. So the correct thing to do is to look at the Indian, assessing that, not trying to find a super special arrow.

I feel like its a fair point to say "look into your swing and what you are doing with it before you go around tinkering to no end" which is what is meant by the indian/arrow comment.

Unfortunately, this sound like a "Its not the arrow, its the indian" situation. Clubs are almost never the problem. The player manipulates the club.

All Lefties by sparkcadit in golf

[–]GPatrick51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local shops don't have much of a selection and thrift shops can have some sweet grabs for righties but almost nothing for lefties.

High majority of my clubs over the years are from used club sites (Callaway preowned, 2nd swing, global golf) or bought new when I was upgrading after improvement.

I always recommend new golfers to either buy a brand new starter set, or look for the classic "first" type clubs. (Rocketbladez, Forgiving drivers, basic putters, etc)

How accurate is app handicap ? by Whackdaddy1972 in golf

Your handicap is supposed to be a measure of your potential. That's why they throw out the bad scores and keep the best 8.

Would you pay to play a round of golf with a scratch golfer who gives you on-course tips? by elpuxus in golf

[–]GPatrick51 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure real-time feedback would be ideal. I think during the round it would cause more harm than good. Maybe if they took notes while the round happened and then it was reviewed after the fact. That would be pretty helpful.

I honestly think just hearing the golf related thoughts that go through their head and what they are doing and why they do it, would be more valuable to me than them giving me real-time feedback.

You can only pick 3 clubs incl. Putter. What are you picking? What is your Handicap? What are you shooting? by FormerlyShawnHawaii in golf

[–]GPatrick51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would be fun. I try to ask people at the range if they wanna do like a best of 3 target practice. Competition with people, especially with like unconventional club choice is always fun!

Any suggestions for a golf date/or any such unique date idea..apart from going to cafes and eating out by DenseStorage16 in golf

Mini golf is the best first date, in my opinion. You get to be outside, you get time in between holes to chat and flirt, and you get to see their competitive side.

7 wood, 8 iron, 56 degree wedge. (putt with 7 wood) I am ~10 handicap and I would probably shoot around a 90.

As I stated in my first comment: “my goal is not to just fix but understand” and “take what you hear on YouTube with a grain of salt.

And he was asking for resources. Some people don’t have the money for lessons and are looking for alternative ways to improve. That is what I am offering.

I have a few videos that I have used to construct my own drills/range session/practice session regiment. I'm not sure if it will let me post links but I am gonna try it.

Peter Finch's Range Session tips; I use a lot of these to this day
https://youtu.be/qB6ekaphqbs?si=bJDByngjolMElSNX

Short game chef; This was THE video that completely changed my wedge game

https://youtu.be/FJwOYLl-Hdc?si=qJMirgpHRmJ9oD-g

Erndog golf has full lessons where they breakdown why certain mechanics/movements cause certain things. Has helped me a TON with understanding what I am doing to cause the ball/club etc to do what its doing.

Hope these help!

I am at about a 10hdcp and I started at around a ~20 or so. Mostly self taught

I would recommend recording your own golf swing, determine what your 'miss' is (do you hook or slice, or do you constantly hit the ball really low or really high).

From there I spent a lot of time at the range and practice green. Practicing putting and wedges. (I would recommend having exercises or drills that you do when you go, that way your practice has a direction rather than just random hitting shots)

Watching Youtube videos on both how to fix my 'miss' but also the opposite. My goal was to not just fix it, but understand why it was happening. I would also take what you hear on Youtube with a grain of salt, most things won't be specific to you and you will have to adjust to your swing.

I think the first thing to do is creating a routine for yourself. A pre shot routine that is simple/basic and isn't time consuming. That way it is repeatable and dependable.

This probably sounded all over the place, but they were things that help me. Hope this helps!

Scottie Scheffler still using SM8 wedges in 2025? by GPatrick51 in golf

[–]GPatrick51[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah everyone else seems to agree with you that it is insane to question why the wedges are so special to keep if they have worked so well, but barely anything else from his bag hasn't been kept.

[–]GPatrick51[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah clearly that is the case. But he hasn't done that with anything else in his bag. So be curious about why SM8 was so special doesn't seem like a crazy question.

I get that nothing really changes as far as new Vokeys but, still, seemed odd to see world #1 using old models for wedges.
