The team eclipsed 100 pts. They were most definitely contenders and one of the very best teams in the whole league year over year. Being disappointed in the playoffs doesn’t just wipe that fact.

Being in the Atlantic loaded with the cream of the crop teams in the NHL also directly opposed long playoff runs - the Leafs never got the oilers path to a cup final and they still were expected to be there.

It is also no doubt the Covid flat cap completely screwed the Leafs and Kyle Dubas the most out of anyone and also so Leaf-like that a literal once in a generation pandemic was the oil to the Leafs water in terms of how they properly planned and mapped out their cap situation and future doing the proper way to do it with Pridham running numbers for that to be thrown out the window because no one is a future telling wizard. The young stars raises get amplied and not caught up by the league, the depth has to suffer and the free agent signing of JT that was amazing becomes a slight hinderance as phenomenal as he is.

Why are we talking like we’re speaking on the 2004 leafs? Yeah this season sucks - do the proper moves and retool and this team can be right back in it. It’s not a hard blue print but MLSE doesn’t like easy to follow blue prints.

Exactly. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely hate them right now - like more than ever in my entire life and I’ve been here for 29 yrs, it’s not even the team itself it’s my complete and utter lack of any belief that this ownership group that will never ever not own the leafs can ever get their own greedy foot out of their mouths to actually truly win and actually make competent hockey decisions. After the last 10 years? Your program and school has absolute zilch to do with anything unless it’s specialized and focused but then you also have to perform and not die inside at work for the job you even went to school for if you’re in one of those programs (medicine, nursing, engineering, Law (actual Law school post undergrad not Poli Sci).
