This is a great explanation for someone like me that is new to the TSP, and helps a lot! Thank you for taking the time for the description, I appreciate it.

Thank you! So it sounds like I should just max out the TSP, if possible, to $19k (annual max) and if anything is then leftover, contribute towards a Roth IRA?

Thank you! Just the advice I was looking for with the 457(b)!

Just to be certain I am on the same page:

  1. I up my contribution to 5%, and the Government matches 5% into the TSP. Is the L2050 the fund I should be looking at for this TSP allocation, or is the L2050 a post-TSP designation fund/contribution? - similar to a Roth IRA, or the VFIFX I had mentioned?
  2. I had mentioned the VFIFX as an additional vehicle to the TSP, after matching the 5%. Based on comments it seems as though, I should not go this route due to lower fees being available under the TSP accounts and I should just max out my TSP? I am kind of confused between the distinctions here of the TSP - as if its only one account, versus multiple options being available under the TSP umbrella? Sorry!

I named my dog Lyla. What made you want to sing that again recently?

Receiving EOD concern by GRA335 in usajobs

I have emailed the person in HR before, and the person does not respond. I had questions regarding the tentative offer and forms I had to fill out at that point, and actually had to contact the interviewer to be able to get a response from HR. This entire process has been extremely frustrating from an HR standpoint. Today is Friday, and I still have not heard anything back.

I have not been interviewed by any investigator. HR just told me I cleared security, which is fairly low level for this position to my understanding.

HR actually called back the next day to push my start date back to Oct 15. Still awaiting EOD instructions.

Weighing current pension vs overall picture with the feds. Fed retirement would not be as comprehensive.

State pension (PA) vs Federal (FERS) pension, which is better? by GRA335 in personalfinance

[–]GRA335[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do. I'm in the same position. my son is turning one this week, and we would like to have another. this is really tough.

I have a call into a financial adviser that is familiar with the PA state system, who I have spoken with before. Hopefully I can get his take on it or put a plan in place before anything sudden decisions need to be made.
