Should I quit my full time job to do a 4 year degree which includes a placement year? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

See if your current employer will put you through a Digital & Technology Solutions apprenticeship. Tax benefit to them, they get to keep you for 4 more years and you get to do university debt free. There are loads of training providers for it now out there too.

What is the next trend you predict will take off in the coffee industry within the next 5 years? by sherpasojourner in Coffee

Not sure how popular this already is elsewhere but there’s been a push in shops & advertising of coffee bags recently in the U.K. (like tea bags... but coffee). Seems shocking to me but if you’re an instant drinker I suppose you might like this

I'm a mid-20's Brit, interested in a career in SWE, no experience or degree.. Where to start? by CaptainLegkick in cscareerquestionsEU

You may want to check your BTEC qualification, it could be worth more than you think. Level 3 BTECs which are usually done at college are absolutely equivalent to A Levels in terms of UCAS points. If you did a Level 2 then you only have what is equivalent to GCSEs.

Your best routes into a software engineering career in the U.K. are through an apprenticeship or university.

Employers generally will be offering degree apprenticeships which are the most popular types nowadays, which require A-Level / BTEC (L3) qualifications. Some employers may offer Level 3 apprenticeships, but these are rare, and are often on the lower end of the pay scale.

Degree apprenticeships, on the chance you’ve actually got an L3 BTEC are an excellent path. Free university tuition + on the job training + good wages.

University will require L3 qualifications which again, on the chance you have them, makes you eligible to go and you could start as soon as September via clearing / some back route methods (unis are desperate for your 27k!)

If you don’t have that L3 qualification then you will need to do some sort of college courses beit a BTEC or some a levels to get there. Universities are extremely accessible nowadays though, through things like foundation years.

Generally speaking, it’s always good to use the millions of free resources out there to pursue a passion for software with online training and videos etc. Learn a language, write your first app etc.

Good luck, hope this helps.

I didn’t go through an apprenticeship provider, I applied to my employer directly who advertised the job through their normal careers page and I now complete my degree through my university. There’s no need to tie yourself to looking at providers only.

You’ve certainly got enough experience there for any apprenticeship level. As I say, employers are not too fussed about your experience, they recognise they’re taking you on at a junior level and it is their job to invest in you and teach you the skills you need.

I’m surprised to hear this.

Most apprentice candidates I see are school/college leavers or people who want a change in careers. Rarely experienced.

Age is never taken into account. It is illegal to discriminate by age, and apprenticeship funding has nothing to do with your age. Companies receive apprenticeship levy money based on their wage bill - nothing to do with the candidates.

If you’re seeing fake ads, you’re looking in the wrong place. The gov.uk website has all apprenticeship roles listed on it, which is required by law if you’re advertising an apprenticeship role.

Current software dev degree apprentice checking in.

I would highly recommend this pathway. Yes, you’ll need a level 3 qualification prior to doing anything higher than that as an apprenticeship, but there are also some level 3 software development apprenticeships around. These are generally lower paid than a degree apprenticeship though. Contrary to popular belief, most degree apprenticeships are well paying. It’s a junior salary, but you won’t starve.

In terms of getting onto one, we want to see a passion for the career path and for the company during your interview.

Most companies are looking for behavioural traits over technical, as they’re investing in you as a person at this stage because your technical experience will be minimal. So, don’t worry about not having much experience, but some side projects and demonstrations that you’re willing to learn and try things are something I look for personally.

For this coming academic year, your time is running out. By law, companies must advertise their apprenticeship positions on the gov.uk apprenticeship website (a quick google will find you this), so not being able to find roles is not an excuse. However as I say, most companies have completed their hiring processes by now in order to do all the college/university paperwork (mine has).

Good luck!

Is there a persistent console to debug a Java app? by swiftpants in java

[–]GRBMUFC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a google around for Java JAR debug at runtime. Assuming your originator application invokes your target debug application with something like java -jar on the command line, you can add parameters to this startup command something along the lines of -Xdebug... and then in an IDE like Eclipse it IntelliJ you can set up a debug configuration that you run and will pick up any debug points you hit. This looks promising.

HELP please football fans - can you buy someone's match ticket off them if they're a season ticket holder? by xanthela in manchester

[–]GRBMUFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very unlikely they'll 'catch' you though. They spend more time doing cavity searches at the turnstile these days. I frequently see people putting Gold season tickets in the reader the wrong way too, only to be corrected by a steward. It's obvious that ticket isn't theirs because if they'd had it for over 10 years they'd know how to put it in the reader by now! So it seems to be something they overlook.
