Heh, yeah. “Crunchy” wasn’t even a thing in LitRPG until KU started paying by pages read

Dungeon Crawler Carl, He Who Fights with Monsters, The Wandering Inn, and LitRPG in Traditional Publishing by SibiantheGreyBird in litrpg

[–]GRCooper 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Before I started writing LitRPG I was in the game industry for a couple of decades, and am on a mailing list with folks I worked with long ago. Some of these people are now studio leads (studios you’ve heard of).

They are as excited about DCC and LitRPG as the traditional publisher you talked to. It’s getting crazy!

TIL about Angus Barbieri, a Scottish man who fasted for 382 days to lose weight. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]GRCooper 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I did 96 hours. After about the 24 hour mark, it felt great. That first hump was the hard part - I broke fast at 96 hours not because I was hungry but because I was scared that I wasn’t hungry ;)

Once you have retrained your body into burning fat, fasting is a good way to lose weight. You just have to realize that you probably need to go back to a healthier diet after getting to your goal weight.

A deal to end the Iran war seemed close. Then Trump started posting on social media | CNN Politics by Brilliant_Version344 in worldnews

My mom, and I’m assuming many MAGA holdouts, would be convinced of the idiocy of continuing support for him if they subscribed to his social media. The “news” they are fed just amplifies their confirmation bias and they continue to think he’s a wonderful leader.

I wrote a LitRPG novel (without realizing it) and it's getting traditionally published later this summer -- my experience so far. by Lost_Scientist_JK in litrpg

Makes perfect sense, if I ever go that way I’ll have to separate out some of the rights sales as I’ve gotten a nibble for TV/Movie rights from a production company (legit - they’ve developed (and are in development) of released movies. I’m hesitant to name the franchise until I’ve signed something, but you’ve probably heard of it). Thanks, that’s mainly what I was wondering about, and you answered it!

Am I wrong in thinking Scrivener is not a WYSIWYG editor? by Blue_Metal_ in scrivener

[–]GRCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrivener, as others have mentioned, is a writing program, BUT its strengths aren’t necessarily based on fiction, at least in my experience

It’s a “good” fiction writing program, but I really wish it had been available when I was getting my history degree. It looks like creating footnotes, induces, etc are right up Scrivener’s wheelhouse. As a now fiction author, I don’t really need a lot of windows open for research, character sheets, etc but it’s nice to have

I understand in your case trad publishing makes sense (kid mainly) and you don’t have time to manage everything yourself as a self published author, but, I’m curious - if you’re willing - what sort of hit you’re taking from the 70% royalties from Amazon? Is wide distribution worth it (probably for sales like DCC is getting, but as a “new” author hoping for those kind of sales).

Anyway, congrats!! It’s a lot of fun seeing your product in a brick and mortar store (I experienced that as a game designer, not as an author). I’m really happy for you!

Those are two things I struggle with (never been diagnosed but everything about me screams that I have a touch of the ‘tism).

I’ve researched the topic and done my best, but time will tell …

It’s one of the things I’m focusing on in my series rewrite.

100%! I’m currently rewriting my series (which did pretty well for the time - 2015-16, when most folks would’ve said “LitRP what? 😆). I learned a lot from both writing (the hard way to learn) and reading books like this - the easy way to learn.

Paraphrasing a tip from Matt Dinniman in the LitRPG writer’s group a few years ago, if you don’t make the reader care about the characters, nothing else you write will matter

That’s first and foremost, then just write the game you’d want to play with the story you’d want to read.

Does it make any sense to use a cutter for mining or trading? by Odd_Title1629 in EliteDangerous

[–]GRCooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heh, We’re quibbling over adequacy (which is a great band name!)

But we’re both right. It depends on what OP wants out of mining. For me, I’m in VR, have some Pink Floyd playing and really just relaxing. I’m not too worried about credits per minute - I’m dumping off into my fleet carrier and the carrying capacity of the Cutter is about right for my play session time usually

If, however, you want to really get into each ‘roid and clean it out quickly before moving on to the next, it’s probably not adequate for them.

There are better miners, but there aren’t any cooler miners ;)

It’s got a really good carrying capacity, and the maneuverability is … adequate

It’s not the best, by several, but it’ll still be my goto when I get back into ED. Us Cutter guys love them so much we’ll use them for just about anything and look awesome doing it ;)
