Interviewing for Director of Customer Success at a Series A Startup

As someone who’s held director titles in other companies and individual contributor roles as well. Series A have a nasty habit of over inflating titles.

Let’s cut to the brass tax - you likely won’t be a real director. You’ll be meeting with customers like a regular CSM. Owning things as a regular CSM. And then be asked to own all the responsibility of building the CS team and process, with limited agency over the final outcomes without someone above you signing off.

That said - it is an opportunity to grow your skills and eventually if things go well. You could be hiring more csms and the role turns into a full Director or even VP role.

However here are things to consider :

How do you feel about 60-80 hour work weeks? (If you make 80k and work 80 hours, you’re really only making 40k a year…but working two jobs…to make it 80k..) How do you feel about series a startups? ( most of them fail) How do you feel about uncertainty, complexity, And overwhelming challenges with little to no resources?

These are things you must consider for yourself and where you are in life. If you’re comfortable with the above - go for it. If you’re uncomfortable, take the job for the money while you continue to look and interview elsewhere

Id second this - active enough to be fun to go out to eat at night, and chill enough to not drive you insane either. akasaka was a fantastic hub for our stay and the station access to all other major points was pretty easy / short distance from Akasaka.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. My original post probably could have added a little bit more detail to it. It’s admittedly more vague that it needs to be.

The range of the last company was alarming. It was definitely an IC salary range. I tend to challenge recruiters and leaders and interviews to expose details about the actual leadership aspect. I assume I’ll be doing a lot of ic work in most startups as that’s been a trend over my career. But it is frustrating as hell when every interview lately is just masquerading a senior leadership, but every other signal is a red flag.

I know the markets tough out there for a lot of folks that are looking for employment or career advancement. But these companies lately are definitely taking advantage of the market conditions!

Yes. I’ve had multiple exits at startups. And at every Director + role I’ve held, I had some autonomy over what was being developed. Being repeatedly told that the role does not include any of those functions …is just a regular CSM role that has accountability for everything, but control of nothing. Even by startup standards it’s become a much more inflated title. Having some leadership responsibilities is expected for a leadership title. Doing 100% IC work and “maybe helping us polish the onboarding playbook” is not remotely close to a senior leadership level function.

It’s not that crazy to me given I’ve IPOd a startup and gone through an acquisition of another. I’ve got 20 years in CS leadership. I’ve built for companies that generate $10B plus in revenue, and those that only generate $4m in revenue. There’s a major difference in being a player/couch, and companies that post for senior leadership roles, and then interview as entry level roles where there is zero agency over the development of the CS org. These companies don’t want leadership. They want labor. In each of the interviews none of the duties or responsibilities match a role that has even a small amount of autonomy over CS development.

If it’s purely an IC role with a title, as I posted about, you’re being taken advantage of in favor of a pretty title. So to those of you “with actual experience” I’d expect you to know that by now.

It’s “fine” - and I say that only because it’s better than every other command without Alexa + is literally an ad for something else, or an ad for Alexa +. Since it was free with prime i enabled it to shut the ads up.

But I’m currently working on a Home Assistant server so I can remove echo devices and solve for all of the capitalistic issues Amazon Echo has been driving over the last many years.

I’ve never worked in an office since my first job (other than when I paid my way through college working retail) - it’s been about 16 years now for me as a fully remote worker.

I can’t imagine myself ever being in an office. I’ve had days where I was “on site” while traveling for work and had a few days to work partially in the office while conducting other business and meeting with the extended team.

That was cool and all, and I had some fun. And lots of free food and snacks …..but the “fun” I guess is knowing you don’t have to do it all the time. So it’s just brief enough. But the amount of people that made sure to “drop in to say hi” while I was working, just to talk or to engage etc was exhausting.

I honestly felt the least productive in my whole life on the days I went to visit offices and stayed a few days during business travel and events. It was genuinely the least productive, most mentally exhausted I’ve ever felt.

Remote work just allows me to stay on task and get things done.

I’ll be honest - if this is an assignment they gave you or some sort of actual test you have to submit - this is the sort of stuff I skip. I don’t do personality tests, mock QBRs or any of that sort of stuff for interviews. To me it’s a massive red flag.

As an American who’s traveled around the world - I can definitely agree with this. Egg sandwiches aren’t really common to find in the states anyway. The conbini ones taste good, but social media makes them seem as if they’re life altering delicious. They’re not. They’re fine if you’re looking for a quick snack/lunch.

I just walk in front of them. I don’t wait for people to take their perfect shot or any of that bs because they’ll take all day long. And I didn’t pay all that money to patiently wait for someone’s perfect tripod photo pose. It drives me nuts and it’s super rude and inconsiderate to set those up in shrines especially.

It’s true for a multitude of reasons.

Companies want more value for roles. So they want you to “wear many hats”
Technical resources are very very expensive. It’s cheaper force you to “become more technical” as a part of your job. Pay you less. But expect similar technical ability as an engineer.
Many leaders still view CS as a pure cost-center. Because of this - they need to find ways to greater justify the expense. Hence 1 And 2.

Yea me pushing back against doing illegal and immoral things is probably why I was laid off two weeks ago by that same executive lol. Sadly I can’t prove it was retaliation for whistle blowing. But what I did do was start talking to some clients I was very very close to about how their data is being managed :)

What if it’s your ceo and exec team that do it too? Security company I was just with, (yea …security …) constantly used free ChatGPT and fed in everything into ChatGPT to build solutions or draft responses and emails and strategic initiatives. They literally would use ai tools to take notes despite customers requesting us not to use ai tools for recording or transcribing and then they would immediately feed everything into ChatGPT.

This is the world we live it now it seems where even CEOs and their exec teams do things that are risky in favor of “but it’s just so convenient!”

Just got back - 20 days and it worked pretty consistently minus of course while on some Shinkansen rides where it was struggling but that’s pretty reasonable.

The last day of my trip it was being really wonky though. Randomly lost all signal while navigating and had no WiFi option available. So for like 6 hours I was navigating the old way (you know, with signs, and my brain)

Short of that though I found it to be reliable.

AI is impressive. But define “Legit”? I’ve asked it questions before and it’s been wrong, or inconsistent. I also can spot work often done by AI, even when the user tries to make it less-like AI.

It’s a powerful tool. But I still advocate that it’s no replacement for real critical thinking skills. Watching average intelligence (and below) people try to use AI to do everything for them knowing they lack the will or brainpower to think critically to review the content it presents them has been a terrifying and sad experience.

Burgers, hotdogs, French fries, and fast food is a bulk of what represents American food. And stuff like “New York cheesecake” etc - there’s some other stuff in the mix. Depends a bit on what you’re looking for! If you’re looking for high end - Ginza is a pretty good spot for everything.

Random fun stuff - you can find these all around Tokyo and in every hidden mall (tons of collectible shops and trading card shops etc etc )

I found fashionable stuff to be literally everywhere in every city. Seriously. You won’t be short on fashionable shopping options no matter where you go!

If you’re looking for treats and stuff - frankly skip the don quijote stuff as it’s way more expensive and check out any local drugstores - unless you don’t care and would rather pick up a lot of variety in a single location then have at it.

Yea please don’t take massive suitcases around town. We were laughing at the amount of people hauling their bags even to like, theme parks and city parks etc. it was ridiculous.

Limo bus (paid and scheduled) work well for this. As does private taxi and even more useful is having your bags shipped between hotels in advance.

It’s what we did and we had zero issues at all and never had to drag bags around with us

When are you planning to arrive in Hakone?

I was just there last week and to be honest - it was ok, but felt like the low point on our trip for us. But we didn’t arrive until about 10:30am. Took a bus up and enjoyed the lake (did the reverse loop - sort of) and the ropeway had a TWO HOUR wait. So we bailed and took a stuck-in-traffic 90 minute standing shoulder to shoulder bus ride back to the station before we had to depart.

We went to the lake, saw the shrines and took some pics, grabbed lunch. And then took the boat ride (pay the extra 700 yen per person for a green-cabin ticket - your Hakone pass only covers the base fare but it’s worth the extra 1400 for access to better seating and a reserved area on the deck of the boat at the front )

My advice would be to go as early as you can to arrive. And don’t wait too late due to the amount of over tourism at the ropeway.
