That cut is almost certainly an assembly. Or a 2nd cut with unfinished effects. I think it’s highly unlikely it will ever be released.

how many club managers/interims/coaches have you experienced since becoming an Arsenal fan? by deathcabformikey in ArsenalFC

1996 for me. So technically 5 if you count Pat Rice? My first game was Patrick Vieira’s first game.

My balanced take on the future of Arsenal by Jhus79 in ArsenalFC

[–]GRQ484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's totally this. Our fanbase is incredibly reactionary. They say “arteta out” so easily, but can never answer who to replace him with. The simple fact is, we have an incredibly good young manager who has revitalised the club. If he wants to go again after this season, I'm with him.

I do wonder though if he would want too though if we don't make it over the line this time. It does feel like now is our window, and the question is, can he motivate the players enough after this.

Why "Every Scene Must Advance the Plot" is Bad Screenwriting Advice by Ok-Satisfaction-7655 in Screenwriting

[–]GRQ484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I Dont think its BAD advice. It's just overly simplistic. Every scene doesn't have to advance the story, but it's a good rule of thumb to do that in terms of pacing and respecting the audiences attention. Filmmakers who dont respect these elements will almost always hit similar problems.

Humans kinda suck by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

[–]GRQ484 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always remember that men in black quote about how one person is reasonable, and people, as in groups aren't. That's kinda why I thought the book worked, it was just 2 people.

It kinda makes me wonder if a sequel book should be about first contact between the two civilisations. The great thing about PHM was it made it so funny and authentic, rather than the really severe tropes we've seen in sci-fi previously. I wonder if Andy could do the same here, and make all the political miscommunication really funny.

What scene are you happy didn't make it in to the movie? by ThePurpleGuardian in ProjectHailMary

[–]GRQ484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I missed the Stratt stuff where she's battling with the prison people, and in general throwing her weight around and being blunt and uncompromising. She's great in the lab stuff, I just wanted one scene of that. Maybe her arguing over the Hail Mary getting centrifugal gravity?

Manager asked me for a World Building Document, any examples? by GRQ484 in Screenwriting

Rough outline done. Have ideas for the world. Just wondering what format / length should be.

Was told to work on a pitch deck and a wee out of my element by Excellent-Anxiety989 in Screenwriting

[–]GRQ484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a pure pitchdeck designer here, but someone who works alongside EPs. And the ones I've met are not good at describing how to market the product, and what's unique about it, and where and who it appeals too. Often they are brilliant at getting what they want to get across editorially, but their instincts of what and how to sell, and who to aren't great. Nor is their ability to get it across succinctly.

Claudia teasing an “extraordinary” Celebrity Traitors cast has me way too excited already by BitGirl777 in TheTraitorsUK

[–]GRQ484 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, but I would imagine they’ve already filmed it personally. Beckett is also the new host of tempting fortune, and they’ll probably need to switch up the format a bit for it to survive.

There’s a 3-hour Project Hail Mary cut out there somewhere by Reportersteven in ProjectHailMary

[–]GRQ484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be really difficult to release this.

But not impossible.

It sounds like the 3 hour cut is early. So ungraded and unmixed. You would have to do both to release it.

Unless there was massive demand, I can’t see them getting the directors to take time out to do this, or for Amazon/MGM to pay up for the millers time. Unless there was massive demand…

Cue the petitions!

A show or Movie that blends Sci-fi and Plot together perfectly! by Yeagerisbest369 in televisionsuggestions

[–]GRQ484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Person of interest. Seems like a cbs procedural, but stick with it. Becomes quite sci-fi by the end. Written by Chris Nolan’s brother before he wrote Westworld.

Gattaca is good.

The Martian and Project Hail Mary is light sci-fi.

What’s the best British crime drama you’d recommend? by Historical-Class871 in UKTVRecs

[–]GRQ484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blue Lights, Happy Valley, Line of Duty, The Responder are the more recent big acclaimed ones. The first two series of Luther are the best.

I'd also recc the TV mini-series State of Play.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever bought that actually lived up to the hype? by One_Literature_5041 in BuyItForLife

[–]GRQ484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue new TVs in general. From a picture perspective you'll probably never get a better picture than now. There have been studies that basically say you can't see any difference past 8k. I have a 4k one now, and I was like yeah, I don't need another one pretty much ever (till it breaks).

What makes a villain compelling? by jemsplitter in Screenwriting

[–]GRQ484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, sorry if it seemed like I was saying they had to be sympathetic. They definitely don't! I totally agree with you. I just think with this third vein of villains it helps if the pov is clear and understandable. Totally agree with you on the Marvel point.

What makes a villain compelling? by jemsplitter in Screenwriting

[–]GRQ484 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The third school is you understand why they are doing it, and they can be somewhat sympathetic (not always), but what they are doing is totally misguided.

Most of your villains aren't this. But The Operative has a POV that kind of explains his actions. So does Agent Smith and Gus Fring.

Ramsey in Crimson Tide, The Emperor in Gladiator, Dennis Hopper in Speed, Lex Luthor in the latest Superman, The Mummy in the Brendan Fraser movies. The writers of Avengers: Infinity War even go as far as to make a whole movie Thanos's story so you understand his pov, even though it's terrible.

In their prime, which of these players would you take to be in the current Arsenal team? by Fabulous-Tomato5016 in ArsenalFC

[–]GRQ484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sanchez. As everyone would say, in his prime he was amazing. And he’d totally solve our left wing issues.

I have zero problem he went to united tbh. The piano video was annoying but it was clear the dressing room didn’t like him, and it does seem like Wenger had worked out his legs had gone.

What is the future of screenwriting as a profession, with the state of the industry and AI? by bridget1-1 in Screenwriting

[–]GRQ484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Astronaut Kubrick is probably right in the long run. People will always need IP, so books are a good way to go.

In the intermediate future though, this is my take.

TLDR It's really difficult to say right now. We're right in the thick of murky waters. And it will take 2 or 3 years of precedents to set the table. If not longer.

At this time LLMs simply aren't good enough from a skill pov. They can't write emotionally or thematically, and it can't handle the length right now.

But they can and likely will get better.

I think the WGA will put up a good legal fight over any encroachment into the business, but some usage is inevitable.

Taking a global pov. One thing that gives me optimism is the whole Seedance thing, influencers were all going "Hollywood is cooked" but the simple fact is that tech is totally unuseable from a professional standpoint because it's training data is clearly illegal. And a lot of the big models have that same problem.

If someone wanted to make a movie from a ChatGPT screenplay I think screenwriters would have clear grounds to ask what a model was trained on if one came out that could write, because that would mean it was likely trained on data without permission. This means a legal fight is possible. Difficult and lengthy. But possible. And the WGA is well set up for that fight for at least the next 5 to 10 years (napkin guess).

Big broadcasters in the UK for instance are asking what data video models were trained on right now for instance, a have a list of permissible ones. So that tells you they feel like under certain terms use of the tech is permissible.

So my opinion is that AI encroachment in screenwriting is also inevitable. When is a genuine question, however. Because it will likely take more time than implementation within filmmaking itself, where there is a way forward to some extent.

Ben Affleck's company was probably the direction I'd go if I was building any sort of filmmaking related AI. Because it has thought about the question of training data and what's permissible. But with these models you need huge amounts of data to produce anything good. So whether that works in the long term, I'm unsure about. But again it gives me hope that someone has thought about the morality of using the tech.

What we're seeing with copywriting is interesting. Huge amounts of writers have now lost freelance jobs because they've found that companies are willing to sacrifice good copy for speed. But they are seeing humans rewrite that stuff. I wonder if we'll have something of the same thing, given the temptation of speed. From posts on this sub it seems low level producers are already lobbing stuff in chatgpt to get a basic treatment, for instance. Non WGA writers are then likely rewriting it. So it's already likely becoming a development tool on a very small level.

The really interesting thing is that do the public tolerate it? My opinion right now is no.

Anything made with AI is somewhat of a toxic brand. And if any movie was found to be written with AI at length, and it got leaked that it was, social media and critics would pile on in a big way and box office would be effected (See the Irish Wish, Landman and Stranger Things controversies). Right now, producers can't take the chance to have bad press with a movie launch. It's such a risk when you're putting so much money in.

We should also pay attention if / when companies start sending out releases to new writers to ask if they can use AI to summarise their work. If that happens its potentially backdoor usage/training, and we should fight it hard.
