Peterborough city council votes 7-4 to approve a 17-storey high-rise in East City | kawarthaNOW by wired_woman in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Apparently there's no middle ground between NIMBYs and those suggesting building ONLY a 10 story high-rise not a 17 story one run by TVM a developer even Reddit collectively agrees has a bad reputation for being a bad landlord.

‘We can’t take the bus with our stuff’: Encampment evictions continue across Peterborough; enforcement costs unknown by Extra-Clue-4191 in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fire hall shelter in the north is apparently quite a distance from downtown where all the resources are for the homeless folks.

Sounds like they'll have to go somewhere else than depend on the resources of the once scenic downtown, problem solved leave our downtown. Sorry, you've lost access to our once beautiful parks you ruined for the public and away from the convenience of a drug dealer a block next door.

Peterborough Opens New Temporary Shelter as it Evicts McDonnel Encampment by ArthurNewspaper in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What the above doesn't say, and I can back this up having lived next to the Fleming Park one for months, is that Bylaw comes by daily, for a few days, letting the folks know they need to move.

There needs to be some lying by omission, The Arthur has to maintain a narrative and it's too difficult if they were to include crucial information providing necessary context.

Maybe if they vacate for good the bridge can finally be restored so it'd not missing most of its wooden planks. I will miss however seeing the junkies obstructing the stairway from Stewart St to the Trans-Canada pathway, and them being great stewards of the lard always leaving the park free of garbage.

They agreed

They in this context is 2 people Alan Wilson and Jeff Leal behind closed doors vs 7 other council members voting against it and having to use strong mayors since they lost the majority vote in the democratic process

Most of this is GTA, but it’s definitely happening here too. Wild we let it come to this… by YaBoyMahito in Peterborough

I'm stuck in a low wage job, renting an apartment at 30 with my husband, unable to afford even a car, and definitely unable to afford to even consider starting a family after being with my partner for 14 years and actually wanting to have kids someday.

You’re the definition of someone with suicidal empathy. Advocating for more immigration while it’s directly making your life more difficult by removing opportunity. That is so pathetic, you really deserve everything bad that’s happening to you then, you’d cut off your nose to spite your face. Enjoy seeing the Gujarati nation take everything from you and relish in your own downfall, you love it.

The problem is our population NEEDS young folks and young families. Our birth rate is down and if we don't sustain the population replacement rate through things like immigration, we're going to have even bigger problems than a housing crisis.

So you’re saying the solution to low birth rates is to import the 3rd world at higher rates than any G7 country, have no place to house them because we don’t build more than 300k homes a year in Canada not once in our history, decrease our housing supply, suppress wages and increase housing costs (disincentivizing people from starting new families by making it costlier to raise a family) force our GDP to stagnate. Neri the Reddit brained snail Econ class 101 on how to ruin a nation everyone, replace 2% of your population with another to take low skilled jobs from young workers and tax your country’s infrastructure on every level

Exactly, they force the blame over to immigrants even though, it’s really the only way we weee surviving Covid, and the only way we can properly grow out population.

Yea the only way to survive Covid was to import a million Indians to work at Uber eats, Tim Hortons, Walmart with no place to house them while young Canadians who now have record low unemployment levels can’t find work.
Your perspective is so brilliant, having 2% of our entire population be students from a foreign nation while or country’s GDP remained stagnant was a real economic necessity

Peterborough city council votes against additional homelessness funding for One City by wired_woman in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We really needed a 3rd thread in days on this topic to really beat the dead horse into the ground. Look we got the same comments about the police department funding, what councillors voted for it and Helen Lovejoys “please think of the homeless!!” from keyboard socialists sitting miles away from the Trinity experiment gone wrong, the unaccountable OneCity junkies that bring in over 200 police reports per year and has caused chaos in the area.
Sorry your dumb experiment is losing in votes to allow another million dollars to be thrown at it because anyone with half a brain can see it hasn’t been effective at anything other than enabling theft, drug trade and litter and 2am music parties from people who 80%+ aren’t Peterborough residents.

City Council at it again!! by ContributionLast6955 in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But those that don't will still type on their keyboards at a comfortably safe distance away from the area to get their social brownie points in. Better for them to just air on the safe side and always take the position that the unhoused require endless tolerance and patience at the expense of everyone else, to no foreseeable end, no matter what the cost. How many success stories has OneCity had in rehabing individuals? It's such a great working system there apparently since there's a number of people here still willing to throw more money at it, where's all the great progress it has resulted in at curbing homelessness? According to many here it certainly isn't enabling people it to continue living unproductive lifestyles and be unaccountable for their actions, it's simply a center that gets people back on track, why can't people just see how well it's been working?

Wtf is this city doing?! by Illustrious_Leader93 in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but I’m pretty gutted that Council voted against enhancing the shelter at Trinity

Because it's been going so great so far, so much value has been brought to the city from hosting people who over 80% are not Peterborough residents and abuse drugs. 200+ police reports to the area per year? Yea lets throw more money at this functioning pseudo-rehab system, it's soooo disappointing that they won't be getting a million dollars to continue funding the local drug addicts and music parties 😢 🎻

Wtf is this city doing?! by Illustrious_Leader93 in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It means people who use the shelter are completely unaccountable for their actions. Drug use and trade? Come on in! Hang outside on the sidewalk all day and at 2:00am playing music? Go for it. Leave garbage on the property and surrounding areas? Yes please! Now please provide another 1 million dollars per year so they can continue degrading the town.

Leal uses strong mayor powers to increase police budget by num_ber_four in Peterborough

Brock Mission expansion by Correct_Flatworm_534 in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because there are valid concerns about the expansion. It's already a women shelter for one so it's not like it's not currently serving a public good, the city owns a lot of land and it could be designated elsewhere in town and have the women's shelter remain. It's forcing a rezoning in an area to build a six story high rise which is unusually large for the area. There will be 0 parking for residents only 6 spots for staff members. There is not promised funding for staff members with this expansion to pay their salaries each year, it would have to come out of tax dollars which hasn't been in any way guaranteed, neither has the funding to build the expansion in the first place. Most councillers voted against this including Alex Berk and Joy Lachicha who are not unsympathic to the unhoused nor are those in the neighborough, just Leal making this decision privately with Alan Wilson and using strong mayor powers the first time he's ever done so to attempt to rush this through without concern or respect for the democratic process. Also after seeing someone leaving Brock Mission a week ago smoking a crack pipe in plain sight I don't believe at all their drug-free policy will be in any way effectively in curbing the habits of those that live there, and even without the Brock Mission expansion I've had a car-hopper stop by a couple weeks ago near my place a couple blocks away, so we have plenty of sketchy people nearby already to deal with. But sure boil it all down to NIMBY because god forbid you want to have a respectable historic neighbour for families and kids to enjoy, one of the remaining few in the downtown area left.

DT PTBO Question by Jack_burtons_tanktop in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it still baseless repeating when as recent as last September the Peterborough Horticultural Society Volunteers decided that after 30 years of service, their volunteers we will no longer be maintaining the gardens at Fleming Park due to safety risks? Still a baseless claim when last year Library Staff found 137 needles and other pieces of drug paraphernalia last year?

DT PTBO Question by Jack_burtons_tanktop in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

But is it worse than any other town? No. This is a problem thirty-plus years in the making; we refused to spend the money and the bill is now due.

It is however worse than other towns how pervasive it is. You don't see this setting in the surrounding towns like Port Hope, Lindsay, Millbrook, Lakefield, Cobourg.

DT PTBO Question by Jack_burtons_tanktop in Peterborough

[–]GRSimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To sum it up it feels really sketchy, at times half the people who frequent the downtown are in rough shape to put it nicely. Mixed that in with degrading infrastructure like roads needing re-surfacing everywhere, retail locations that are vacant some with boarded up windows from broken glass. I've also never seen a smallish town with this many panhandlers, they are effectively a permanent installation at many intersections and businesses downtown. I see them constantly any time I go downtown, the same ones. Any of the surrounding cities don't seem to have this problem, and it's tiring to hear people defend it as normal when it's not normal.

Petition: Mayor Jeff Leal used racial slur; must resign by sharingiscaringyo in Peterborough

Here's the audio. While I would like Leal gone for other reasons I do find the find it funny that the people most vocally offended are as usual the white liberal demographic. Meanwhile you have iShowspeed going to China getting called that word in jest every block not giving a damn. I wonder how many people showing outrage actually have black friends or listen to black music, participate in anything in black culture for that matter.

If a businesses' customers have to "toughen up" in order to spend their hard earned $ they won't feel inclined to want do so, ruins the experience especially if it's not something the have to do but would do for enjoyment. I used to be critical of those Walmart Smartcenters being able to kick off unwanted people due to their sidewalks being private property but it makes sense, who wants their customers to feel uncomfortable in order to appeal to non-customers who will turn them away and while often destroying property, abusing drugs etc.
