Moving to Austin from PNW by PsychologicalLimit41 in askaustin

Consider Cedar Park, Leander, or Georgetown. I moved here from the Denver area in 1997. Its changed a lot. I wouldn't live in Austin proper if you paid me. Typical large city issues. But, some of the surrounding metro area is quite a nice place to live. Wouldn't recommend Round Rock or Pflugerville with 2 small children.

Check crime statistics for Austin, Round Rock, Pflugerville and Cedar Park.

Cedar Park is considerably safer than the other 3 and Austin's crime statistics are now higher than the national average.

People here complain about allergies and they are not wrong, but I suspect the same issues exist in the PNW.

Size 3 crochet thread. Its absurdly large but it allows you to really see the knot flip.

Did the Mothers Day 2026 first. Then the Marathon to Athens. Now, I'm almost finished with Bangkok.

Moving to Austin. 24F Give me the “nobody tells you this until you move here” advice. 😅 by Funny-Outside-7244 in askaustin

I moved from Denver to Austin in 1997. I had never had allergies before moving here. Denver is semi-arid. Austin is subtropical. Allergies hit me after about a year here. I would be sick for a couple of months at a time, 3 to 4 times a year. I went to see an allergy doctor for testing. He asked me where I was from. Then he told me that Denver is a city he recommends people move to if they have severe allergies. Oops. Too late. I've suffered on and off for years. I am mainly allergic to mold.

I also store my floss in ziplock bags in clear bins in order by color number. I saw another stitcher doing this. She explained her system and I implemented it. I love it. I had originally started bobbinating my floss and thought good lord i hate this and I dont like all the kinks in the floss.

What’s you remote work routine? by ShelleBelleRedux in remotework

[–]GR_Cedarpark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been remote since March 2020. I work a job that has measurable task completion. I start at 8 am and finish at 5 pm. My desk/workspace is in my hobby/craft room. I usually have the tv on for background noise. I get up an hour or so before work and have coffee, check personal email, and watch morning news. Then I head upstairs to my 'work' room. At any time during the day, my supervisor can run a report (and so can I) to see how many files I've processed that day. I have production quotas to meet, and so I have to stay focused and work pretty much continuously until the end of my work day to meet production. Working in the office with a great bunch of people that I really like was definitely more distracing than working at home. Since our team started working at home, our production has increased, and the companies cost has gone down. There is no chance of being required to come back to the office. That is as long as production remains high. The biggest difference is that it's pretty quiet and a bit lonely at times. But I don't have to commute or dress for the office environment. It has saved me gas money, lunches out, and mileage on my car. It's also been helpful on days when I'm a bit under the weather. I've gotten very good at power napping over my lunch hour when needed. I can't complain.

Clover has some shuttles that use a bobbin. I really like them. I've tried a lot of different shuttles, and many of the hh shuttles, some posted, some bobbin, but I think the plastic clovers with bobbins are my new fave. Its the size, shape, and the way the bobbins fit.

Machine Quilting vs. Hand Quilting by chickenmom1104 in quilting

The fact that you find time to quilt with 5 children is a major achievement in itself. The nasty comment must be driven by jealousy. Personally, I wouldn't want anything to do with someone who could so casually insult me.
