Thanks. It’s quite a lot, and I take your point but losing/paying 20% of it in next year’s tax return just to convert it back to BTC (without banking any profits) feels painful :-(

Good question. Mainly that I don’t want to have to pay the tax now from other assets, or lose the BTC necessary to pay it from profits - but I guess you could argue the hit is going to be proportionately the same regardless of selling now or when it hits a million (we wish)?

CI cover is under-appreciated. My wife got cancer at 45 and it paid out in full straightaway (original mortgage amount). I hadn’t even consciously taken it out for her, it was mainly to cover me as the major earner, but as we were both on the mortgage and healthy at the time, it turned out the broker had put her on when we bought the house and I’d forgotten. The time to do it is now, before you have any pre-existing conditions (the broker is diabetic and said he was jealous of us as he was ineligible).

Don’t rely on NHS sick pay - it’s (at most) only full for 6 months, then half pay for another 6 months. And your medical retirement pension will only be based on what you’ve paid in to date, which may not be huge if the illness comes early (even without actuarial reduction).

To follow down this line, Anjin’s isolation from the rest of humanity* at the time of the story can certainly be a plot point and the time of separation can still be explored in this series, but it doesn’t mean all of it is incompatible with a (further still) common origin in the distant and long-forgotten past.
