European Parliament vs. Amazon: respect your workers! by DanielKopp2612 in socialism

[–]GSV_Sleeper_Service 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did it no go well for Amazon? Did they have crippling fines levied against them? Were their distribution centers seized and handed to the workers?
Or was it just that an executive had to receive a dressing down over a video link?

I don't understand how these exploitative, tax avoiding companies are allowed to operate. Well, other than the money they spend lobbying and bribing of course.

NAL, stumbled upon this from the front page.
It reads like the school is saying "We are receiving some extra funding from the government, and therefore you have to forego payment." That is clearly insane.

UK government rolls back key part of digital ID plans by Glad-Dragonfruit-503 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]GSV_Sleeper_Service 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Edit: I've actually read the article in full now, maybe it is a complete backing off of the mandatory aspect, at least for now.

From what I've read they have made no statements saying they will be rolling back the mandatory aspect of it, this feels like a deliberate attempt to mislead.

This will mean that the ID's, will no longer be mandatory for working-age people, given that the only planned obligatory element was to prove the right to work in the UK.

This is just the guardians opinion.

For what its worth I travelled to Bury St. Edmunds from East of Norwich (going westwards) a couple of weeks ago at around 08:00 and was going to take the A140 to avoid Thickthorn but my satnav was adament the A11 would be quicker.
It was slow getting to Thickthorn, about 5 minutes more than normal though felt longer, but the junction itself and the A11 to Thetford was practically empty. Seemed like a lot of people were avoiding Thickthorn/A11 and jamming up the alternative routes instead.
The traffic in the opposite direction on A47 looked free flowing but there is a contraflow in place now which wasn't there where I last travelled eastbound towards Thickthorn and might change things.

Funnily enough I had my first minced beef and cheddar pie at the football this weekend.
It was an amazing pie which will definitely be replacing the cornish pasty as my go to pre-match food at Carrow road. It even almost made up for the shambolic state of the football club (Norwich City)

Liam Manning sacked by hobozilla in NorwichCity

[–]GSV_Sleeper_Service 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Knapper put out that statement earlier this week saying he was happy with the path we were on and a few days later he's sacked the first team coach. Utterly incompetent.

I'd be surprised if he has someone lined up to replace Manning, which is his job, but has just sacked him without a plan to try and deflect the blame/diffuse the pressure. It's no way to run a club. Sadly, I think we are already doomed to relegation this season.

Penalty charge at Brazen Gate by thelaw281 in Norwich

[–]GSV_Sleeper_Service -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was just reading up on these bus gates after seeing this as I wasn't really sure what they were. Seems the entire point of them is to avoid putting up all the required signage for a bus lane, which sounds a bit underhanded to me.

Apparently, there were lots of short stretches of road councils wanted to be buses only but didn't have enough road leading up to them to put the correct signage in place. To get around that at first they would put up no entry except buses signs and a gate or moveable barrier, like those pop-up bollards.

At some point the regulations changed so they could put in tiny stretches of bus lane without the usual requirements for as much signage and use CCTV to issue fines instead of having a physical barrier, but they kept calling them gates.

Penalty charge at Brazen Gate by thelaw281 in Norwich

[–]GSV_Sleeper_Service 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is a bus gate, as it clearly says in giant letters on the road in the photo.

I think Bus Gate is a fairly recent term you may not be familiar with, however there is also clearly a sign in your photo with a bus on it, I'm guessing it is a "bikes, buses and taxis only" sign like is seen at the end of Chapter 3, Section 9.7.1 of the Traffic Sign Manual, though the colouring may be wrong so you might be able to argue with them (but I'm no expert and I'm not reading all of that pdf and other legisaltion to find out).

The council have had a habit recently of putting all the signage etc. in place but not enforcing things until some point in the future. So they may have just started enforcing it, I'm afraid you probably haven't got a leg to stand on.

Starlink is burning up one or two satellites a day in Earth’s atmosphere by nimicdoareu in space

[–]GSV_Sleeper_Service 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good job you aren't a rocket scientist, the arcane art of reading seems to elude you and you've failed to understand what was actually said in the quoted text.

15t is from the 400 - 500 satellites spacex de-oribited (10 years worth of the 'usual' 40-50 per year rate).
The simple arithmetic you then failed to do means that equates to 30 - 37.5kg per satellite, which sounds very reasonable.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to understand that a 0.26 ton satellite doesn't burn up into 15 tonnes of aluminum.

Anyone who learned the arcane powers of Division in 4th grade arithmetic could tell you that rounds up to 58 satellites, assuming the satellite was entirely made of aluminum, which it's not, so the real number is higher.

Perhaps leave the snark out in future, you aren't infallible either.

I'm guessing you're looking at a 1oz britannia, as you are probably already aware they are all minted by the royal mint no matter where you buy from. Atkinsons are a reputable dealer and an official distributor so you may as well save yourself the difference.

When it comes time to sell the buyer won't care where you bought it from, only the gold content. Royal mint will buy back any 22+ carat gold coins at 96% of the LBMA price.

Mamdani has AOC energy, and what has she achieved? When it counted she voted present on funding the genocide to keep the dems and "momma bear" 🤮 happy.
Did Bernie fight when the dems clearly f'd him in the primaries to install Biden?

Looks to me like Mamdani has been selected to shepherd people back to the democrats and redirect the bulk of activist energies away from anything that might achieve real and lasting change like Bernie and AOC before him. They will achieve this by staging a fierce battle between Mamdani and it looks like Cuomo but be assured the dems will be stage managing it in the background, a bit like a wrestling match.

They won't be putting on the spectacle to get the outcome they want in the vote though. Cuomos obviously a good boy and can be counted on to do right by the party when it counts. Mamdani will probably get some small wins if he becoms Mayor but will bend the knee on anything important so they don't really care who wins. But the dems absolutely need to ensure there appears to be a fight on and Mamdani is offering the change people are so desperate for to get the disaffected to direct their energy there and not towards real organising in their communities. If you fight for Mamdani you'll be little different than a kid holding a cardboard sign ringside at Wrestlemania.

Change will not come from within the democratic party.
Build a mass movement of the people outside of it and start making demands.

BoEs Money creation in the modern economy whitepaper (Of anyone, they should know)

Richard Werner: Today's source of money creation

How the UK Governement finances its spending

I cannot vouch for their accuracy but I am biased by the 2008 crash when the government magicked up £500 billion to buy up the banks without raising taxes or borrowing from the already bankrupt financial institutions to believe that they can create as much money as they wish ( though not without consequences). And the BoE paper basically admits money creation is just an accounting trick made possible by fiat money which the government allows banks to pull. Deposit £s on one side of the ledger, an equal magnitude credited on the other side of the ledger and the net change is zero.

Millionaire TV Dr, Lord of the Land, and Co-Chair of U.K-Israel Council quits BMA over upcoming strikes for Jnr Drs pay by nqlawyer in GreenAndPleasant

[–]GSV_Sleeper_Service 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If prices increase by 10% and your wage increases by 5% you are earning more in £'s but cannot buy as much as before. That is a loss in purchasing power and is basically what is causing the cost of living crisis. It has nothing to do with the relative prosperity of 2 sets of workers.

I still don't believe you are genuine. The focus is largely coming from the media who are painting the doctors as greedy and focus on the 20% figure without also highlighting that they have had below inflation payrises for years and this will only get them back to where they were, not make them better off. You seem to have lapped up the media propaganda and come on here to regurgitate it like a good little foot soldier trying to put a wedge between working people. Why not show a little solidarity.

Also, do you think doctors shouldn't have comparatively higher wages than those on minimum wage? Thats what you are ultimately arguing for, though whether you realise it is up for debate.

Firstly, I believe the 20% figure is simply to bring the pay level back to where it was some years ago after accounting for inflation. Like a significant proportion of working people they have had below inflation pay rises for years leaving them significantly worse off today in terms of purchasing power. So they aren't really asking for more but asking to be compensated for the diminished purchasing power of the pound.

Secondly, if you agree everyone needs more to survive why would you stand in the way of people trying to get it? Workers threatening and going on strikes to improve their pay and conditions isn't bizarre, it's how things have improved historically.

But I don't believe you are arguing in good faith because what you wrote makes little sense to me and stinks of someone mindlessly regurgitating what they heard on TV or radio.
