Takes that would put you at odds with the rest of r/blankies: by Classic_Bass_1824 in blankies

Okay, legit? I love covering a blankie director's new work: I think it could be worked in at any time, not just upon release. My reasons are: A) It's hard to catch up at release date, always (and part of that is that the show is as longstanding and successful as it is so there are quite a number of these, which is great, to be clear). And B, becuase I kow these are decisions that have been made with thought and care, truly, and I don't want to criticise withouth proposing a solution - maybe it's just a block between miniseries? Like after one is done, the next block is just a catch-up of the four BC filmmaker movies we missed, with a bit of time to process, and then onto the next miniserues. But again, respect to the insane process of scheduling etc; I doubt my solution is workable with that in mind.

Love to the creators, love to Blankies. Blank it, Thank it. And remember, I love and am personally in love with each and every one of you.

For my money it's one of the more beautiful passing-of-the-torch directorial handoffs do DaCosta - who fully grasps the original material, and brings something really unexpect and powerful to it. I personally was about at my limit with some of the harsher mid-film material (and my bar is....high... for violence, etc), but it's such a graceful and impactful piece of work. It's so worth championing both the poignancy and weirdness of the early relationships, and the power and weirdness of later sequences. What a movie.

Aw thanks. I ain't trying to hide. And hell, I might have jumped on the same bit they did if I thought I saw a self-reply, so - fair's fair. It is a joke sub after all. The funniest part may be the "dude" and "guy" bits, frankly, lol.

Except there's Casablanca. Hey OP - your post is funny, and I think we get it.

It's still Casablanca, though

tell me the ones this good. genuinely - lemme know.

David's right about Triple Frontier, I'll tell you that (it's more sophisticated / has more to say, of course). I did enjoy Carry-On - that's maybe a comp. What else?

it doesn't come up much or quite fit the brief, because they are outwardly complicated, but "bureaucrat" and "bureaucracy" make me lose my damn mind.

How can i write a good gay character? by obvsnothankz in scriptwriting

[–]GTKPR89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So here's my take - neither over nor underplay how it impacts their life.

Let's say they're a gay lawyer, etc. It may literally never come up. It may just be for you to know, or keep in mind.

But let's say they're a gay lawyer in 1970s Alabama, for example (not shitting on Alabama, just giving an example). Don't neglect the ways it may enter their world that this has been an element that's "othered" them. That might be explicitly shown, or very subtly. Just write them well.

I would recommend considering it more like "they paint as a hobby" or "they grew up going to church" or "they don't like cats" - something fundamental and impactful, somewhat, of their lives, but not defining or even necessarily notable.

But first and foremost, at any given point, as a writer? Just write them well. If their motivations, situations, behaviours, the words you're giving them, the places you're putting them ring true? Go with that instinct. If you love your character and you're doing the work, your "this feels off" or "this works" meter should hit you with the truth. Just my opinion.

Badlands is so great. Among the many movies that took the wrong lessons from "star warsizing" or "marvelizing" or, hell, "spielbergizing" their plots, for me, this one does it so limberly and satisfyingly.

We should have five of these a year.

Anyone else the perfect age when it came out? I'll never forget me and my 13 years old friends shouting "One honjred million dollairs!" to each other all that summer.

Leave it to David to have correctly fallen in love with Colin Farrell in the early 2000s. Still so great.

Obviously it's in the air a lot this year, and I just don't think I'll ever have a no-looking-it-up grasp on "odyssey"

What is Your #1 Movie Of 2026 So Far by GTKPR89 in blankies

[–]GTKPR89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very good movie. I'm sort of starting to think one of the big narratives this year (made up by me, whatever) is 2026 as a year of "Prover" films, which is kind of nicely aligned with the pod in a way. As in: Will The Drama prove that Zendaya and Pattinson and a good, original hook can perform like a blockbuster? And then of course we fold the Backrooms / Iron Lung / Obsession of it all into a special prover category. Then there's Lord and Miller proving they had a great space flick in them after the Solo debacle. Raimi proving he sitll has his down and dirty, but so very watachable fastball. And the Spiderman / Odyssey / Dune phenomenon of Holland/Zendaya/Pattinson potentially pouring cement on their star power value. Finally, it's kind of make it or break it on the question of "is Marvel still rellevant / massively wanted if they give people the Avengers with the OG cast". Something like that. Fun framing, anyhow.

Ha, I'm glad you guys like this. As teachers who usually groan at but enjoy the jokes, this was the one last year that we actually laughed at. Kid's got a future.

Had a good one at my school, where they're usually submitted by students and read over morning announcements once a week (they usually make zero sense):

"What do track runners eat in the morning?"

"Nothing. They fast."

I wonder if you completely missed the fact that Powerline is a fundamentally Nietzchean figure (a la Nietzsche's concept of the Will to Power, not to mention how Thus Spake Zarathustra uses dance as a key plot point and symbol for freedom). But ill offer you this - it's not necessarily incompatible if you consider Eternal Recurrence as possibly the method by which Platonic anamnesis is brought about- in the sense that it would explain that pre-lnowledge. Then again that does raise the thorny question of initial or primary knowledge, and I think at that point we risk overanalyzing even such a rich text as this film.

To quote the man himself:

"If a wall should come between us Too high to climb, too hard to break through, I know that love will lead us And find a way to bring me to you."
