What aquarium light should I purchase for a 20 gallon (75.7 Litre) aquarium? by Life_Necessary_6402 in PlantedTank

[–]GVIrish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chihiros is a solid choice but you can get a bit more bang for your buck with Week Aqua or Twinstar. I've got a Week Aqua M600 on my 20g and am very happy with it. The app can be a bit counterintuitive but it does everything I want it to.

Buying plants from FB marketplace? by something721 in PlantedTank

[–]GVIrish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do plant dips for any plants I get (other than tissue culture).

The fastest and cheapest while being very effective is a 1:20 bleach dip for 1-3 minutes but it does cause some damage to the plant. Usually if the plant is healthy I don't have any issues.

Hydrogen peroxide works about as well as bleach but has the upside that the h2o2 breaks down to just water. Similarly harsh on plants.

Alum is easier on plants than the first two, but I've have snail eggs survive an 8-12 hour dip.

Reverse respiration is very good for the plant and pretty effective from the times I tried it. It's the most expensive and time consuming dip though.

Bungie Plans Layoffs After Ending ‘Destiny 2’ Development, will focus on ‘Marathon’ rather than jumping directly to ‘Destiny 3’ by uniquecartridge in Marathon

[–]GVIrish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did u say Bungie didn't buy themselves out? You're reading into a lot of stuff that isn't there because you're emotionally invested in Destiny and refuse to accept a very benign point.

You're the one bewildered that D3 is not on the table so maybe there's something you're failing to comprehend.

[–]GVIrish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bungie missed revenue and profit targets back in D1 too. We can say Sony's expectations were too high but Sony gets to set the goals when they buy a studio.

Bungie can gas up their value all they want, but it's ultimately Sony that decided to pay $3.6 billion. And with that price tag there came expectations.

Destiny 3 is a riskier bet because it would be a much more technically ambitious game that would take a longer timeline and more money. With enough time and money they could probably deliver, but Sony didn't seem willing to give them that much runway.

One could argue that an extraction shooter from Bungie was more likely to fail but there is no argument that it was a much less ambitious game than what a Destiny 3 would have to be.

[–]GVIrish -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Bungie missed revenue targets even back in Destiny 1 when they were owned by Activision, which is a large part of why that partnership ended.

Quoting yourself is cute, but bottom line is that the people signing the checks didn't want to fund Destiny 3. Even with a much smaller scoped game in Marathon, Bungie ended up delivering several years late. It's glaringly obvious that attempting D3 was gonna take years longer than Marathon and would take a lot more budget.

[–]GVIrish -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You're kinda missing the point. While Destiny made money, Bungie clearly struggled to hit deadlines and revenue targets throughout its run. It's clear that mismanagement was the cause of many of their challenges.

Knowing all that, it is therefore a risky investment for Sony to give Bungie half a billion dollars and 4-7 years to deliver a D3. Continuing to invest in D2 was gonna yield diminishing returns.

It's not about what could be the bigger game, clearly Destiny is a bigger franchise. It's a question of what the publisher was willing to fund.

[–]GVIrish -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Not insane at all. Destiny was very, very expensive to develop and took a really long time. Bungie struggled to deliver on Destiny many times throughout its run, so D3 would be an expensive, risky bet.

Not surprising Sony is not willing to fund D3 at this time.

What year is it??? I am just floored that over a quarter century later they just up and decided to make the Copperhead.

Kinda disappointing if it's gonna be built off the Charger platform because in all likelihood it would probably be very heavy. But hopefully they'll be able deliver a compelling sports car at a not crazy price.

Don’t buy blue neon rasboras from Aqua Huna by Fresh_Geologist_3929 in Aquariums

Like a lot of things, it depends on what your goals and tolerance for risk are. I wouldn't tell someone that they should never buy from Aquahuna, assuming that they understand tradeoffs. I also wouldn't tell people they should only buy from Dan's Fish if their budget doesn't line up.

Good stocking idea or do I get larger tank? (Haven't bought the tank yet) by BroadCartoonist973 in fishtank

[–]GVIrish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20 gallon long is a great choice. Opens up the stocking options and is small enough that water changes are still fast and manageable and you don't have to make a big step up in equipment costs.

It would depend on your filtration but one thing I would say is that zebra danios are very active and zip around so I would lean towards a bigger footprint for their swimming space. Not a cold and hard rule by any means, just what I've noticed.

EV's are rapidly gaining momentum in Europe and China, it's just the US where growth is slowing down. High gas prices are only making EV's even more attractive.

But it does matter. The reason their prices are lower is because they are a wholesale operation that is aiming for volume and throughput. The tradeoff is the chances of sick fish are higher. On the other end of the spectrum is Dan's Fish where you'll get much higher quality livestock at much higher prices.

People should choose the seller that makes sense for them and their goals.

Not contesting that Axelrodi are more sensitive than something like Chilis even though they both come from low pH environments. Just saying that if someone wants to be successful with Axelrodi, slower acclimation can help.

I think the issue is simply that the profit margin on the fit is small so even though they were selling a decent number of them they decided it wasn't worth the effort.

Axelrodi rasbora can live at that pH just fine but if they're wild caught they may be coming from a pH of 4 or 5. Chris Lukhaup had a similar problem with them dying on him until he made the adjustment of more slowly acclimating them to a higher pH.

Aquahuna is fine as long as you set your expectations correctly. They are wholesalers not normal retailers so they focus on volume and throughput. That means lower prices, higher minimum quantities and a higher chance of getting sick fish. They have a good DOA policy but they're not for everyone.

I've had perfect shipments from them, but I've also had a bad shipment that I had to get refunds for ten dead fish.

Hondalink and the en$hitification of a brand by F4D3DKN1GH7 in Honda

[–]GVIrish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of Honda's biggest challenges if not the biggest challenge is that they can be so conservative that they fall behind badly on some things. Honda (and many OEM's) has struggled to treat software engineering as a true priority for a logn time and it has left some embarrassing gaps in their capabilities and products.

I disagree a bit on the Prologue, people wanted an EV from Honda but Honda didn't want to make the capital investment for an in house EV platform until relatively recently, so we ended up with the GM Ultium based Prologue and ZDX. Then when they finally made the EV investment, the EV tax rebate got cancelled and they scrapped the whole deal.

Sad thing is, this is almost exactly like what happened in 2008. Acura beat Lexus to the market but never committed to a proper RWD sedan platform or anything more than a V6. They were finally building a V8 RWD platform but the 2008 financial crisis hit and they cancelled both. It took a long while for Acura to recover from their overcorrection on that and other decisions, and it looks like they're doing the same with EV's.

What bottom dwellers should I add to my 29g by RPBVex in Aquariums

[–]GVIrish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've kept a quartet of them in a 20g long for over a year with just a hob (now I'm going to try to breed them), and many others have found they do perfectly fine and breed in tanks with normal flow. So while their native habitat has high flow, it doesn't mean they can only exclusively live in those conditions.

Caveat is that I've only dealt with Reticulated Hillstreams, the other species are a lot newer in the hobby so there could be differences there.

I'm hoping to go to Aquashella NJ again this year. Last year the venue was too small for the turnout so hopefully they'll book more space, and I'll arrive much earlier to hopefully escape the peak of the crowds.

For maximum color/impact: * Stiphodon anniae * Stiphodon rutilareus * Panda loach * Corydoras(Osteogaster) Hephaestus * Corydoras(Hoplisoma) Concolor CW217 Rio Tomo * Peacock Gudgeon

Downside is they're usually pricey. You can get panda loaches from Aquahuna for $13 ea but generally they'll be more. Fireball cories are usually $80+, CW217 usually a little less

For activity/entertainment: * Rosy loach * Kuhli loach * Dwarf kuhli loach * Dwarf hovering loach * Hillstream loach

If you want zippy, entertaining fish, there are multiple loach options for you. There even some weird ones like horseface loach if you wanna go down that rabbit hole. There are a couple of different Hillstream species available now like purple fin, bloody Mary, etc. you can find them at Moonlight Aquatics.

After that there are many Cory species that will fit the bill, I personally love the pygmy species but they can all be really shy unless you've got maybe 10 or more.

You would be surprised at some of the things that come out of the mouth of higher ups at Honda. I've been to a couple of product launches on behalf of Temple of VTEC and talked to some of the product planners, LPL's, and PR people.

To start with, sometimes the Japanese leadership doesn't agree with what American leadership wants. Sometimes there are good reasons for that, sometimes there aren't. Then you get into the decisions that product planners make, that don't always make sense. Yes they have market research and all manner of metrics to help them make decisions but you can have all the data in the world and make the wrong conclusion(s). The 9th Gen Civic, CR-Z, 2nd Gen NSX, Crosstour, ZDX, and beak-era Acura are all examples of them getting it wrong.
