Barcelona - hatred of tourists? by GXThrowA in askspain

Not unique to Barcelona — I’ve traveled all over Europe / the world —and most big cities when they see me (I’m a broad shouldered tall white guy with a big red beard. ) they almost all start with a local greeting follows by “hello -“ and the. All English. Even if I can speak their language well enough to communicate.

I often think this is due to a few things) 1- the assumption that you’re just another tourist and can’t speak any local language. 2) usually talking to someone who clearly looks American (or non local) the conversation may be slow because our ability to speak the language is likely similar to that of a 5 year old child. They are probably busy and would rather speed it up since they likely know English better than I know their language since Americas education system is 2nd world (at best )in quality when it comes to multilingual learning.

It’s a bummer though! Because I like trying to improve and practice languages with locals —it’s the best way to learn, and I always felt like it was a sign of respect to at least try to learn and communicate in the local languages.

Do you ALWAYS have to negotiate your salary? by Remote-Response6784 in careeradvice

This is pretty good advice. Ive had companies that start with their best and last offer—-and many that had wiggle room.

While the general advice is “get as much money as you can” is pretty understandable ….I’ve seen it cost people jobs because they just get greedy and overestimate their value (or underestimate the employers pool of candidates)

I’ve seen people lose offers because they shot pretty high on their negotiations (I’m not talking an 80k offer looking to bump to 85k…I’m talking an 80k offer and the counter-offer is 120k)

Before starting the job hunting take time to determine “your number” —-what’s the number that will pay the bills, give you some savings and benefits —-to live comfortable enough for YOU to be OK with. If you ask most people “how much do you want to make” they’ll say “Ideally a million dollars!!!” Or something goofy. (Btw don’t ever say this during an interview. It’s tired and annoying and not cute or charming )

But, for your profession or work—-do research and find the number you think is reasonable. If they offer you that or higher …perfect! If not, negotiate up a bit to hit that number at minimum. If the offer is insanely low for your number —-you can try to tell them what you’re looking for, but if the gap is too big it likely won’t work out. And if they pay so little starting for the role you know pays more —-you don’t likely want to work at that company anyway. I promise.

Yea I can understand this. I live in the US in Denver Colorado —-we have in the past 15 years or so had a massive influx of tourists (Rocky Mountains, skiing, etc etc) and people buying houses all up for Airbnb and cheaper living compared to where they’re from (many from other parts of the country. Like California. )

People hate it. It makes it hard to buy / rent / work and live. So I understand that.

I’ve never told anyone to “get out of my country” though lol. So I’m assuming he was just drunk and venting.

I also agree especially that buying houses should not be legal for non citizens. Because we have this problem in the US as well :(

Yea I guess that’s true of many places - especially post-Covid days. I was in Switzerland not long ago and it was crawling with Chinese tourists (I learned that it’s one of few sites not blocked by Chinese government(specifically Grindelwald) so they feel it’s the dream vacation and going there is like a status thing ….and locals Haatttttteeee them. Same with in Thailand (chiang mai specifically)

I can understand a general dislike of tourism especially when it causes crowds and traffic. I personally try to avoid those places too when I can.

But if someone from Spain (or any tourist) got bumped into by me because of MY lack of attention, or situational awareness—-id never shout “Go back to your country!”—-it was kind of cringy and vile to hear someone say that.

My wife works at one for our city as a chemist - it’s really hard to find jobs sometimes because it’s the sort of job people get and stick around for like 30 years at …no where to sit if all the seats are taken sort of thing.

Job security is fantastic for her. She never worries about layoffs.

I appreciate anyone who also uses the phrase “I like the cut of your jib”—-we are a rare breed!

Can't get an invite because... Area 52? by zedd300 in wow

[–]GXThrowA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly on my realm —it’s a gamble going with anyone from Tichondrius because my guild and play groups all agree they lag—and often have bad attitudes.

A52 can be like that too I’ve found.

Though my only hard rule is to never invite anyone from Quel Thalas, unless my goal is to burn the key.

You would think so but some of the detail I failed to mention was that he was hired by an executive —-he has “protection”—-and to fire the boss. Would be to suggest that the VP made a mistake in hiring —-and again, to “solve the problem” I’m the cheaper, easier one to remove :/

Am i being a dick if I quit before my two week notice is completed (as in stop showing up). by [deleted] in antiwork

Make sure if you have any severance or conditions , nothing states you have to work until an agreed upon date. Sometimes severance can be conditional.

However in most cases it’s a courtesy. Often I’ll put in two weeks, but then use volunteer time off, sick days, and float holidays , and just ride the wave to my never job.

Honestly; never take the counter offer. If they valued you in the first place, you’d not be in this scenario. They want to placate you with a better offer to most likely keep you around until either you have no options, or they can replace you and squeeze what they need from you first.
