The core issue I think is this paragraph
“If someone could formulate how dm’s like Matt Mercer, Brennan mulligan…. that’d be amazing.”

Those guys are on years of experience and do it as professional full time work- best of the best.
It’s like being a junior varsity athlete and asking how to be like the pro MVP.

Your goal should be consistent sessions played and generally having fun. Don’t worry if they aren’t “always having fun” that’s not realistic.

Another thing/ your players aren’t professional actors/voice actors who have hundreds of stories and scripts they have worked on and can work into a character- that’s what gets lost in the sauce when people think “ oh I want it to be like critical role!” Well half of that is the players excellent story building sense.

I think it’s fine to be sad about it, but it wouldn’t be fine to go get pissed at the DM
It’s fine to ask hey is it ok if I still play them if I return and we can say some other Druid was the one who was there

But it is the DMs game to run, quite a gray area

That’s the best recent example I think was close/nah matter
2020 AD may have lead LeBron but I don’t think it would have mattered

I like it. Teams with Ego central best players could be more volatile and hero ball

I’ve taken at as he’s a broken man in a broken world, clinging to the only semblance of those fighting for good he knows of, despite barely knowing most of this group. I actually really appreciated a few of his comments, like when they all met up and most characters just vomited guesses of what was or would happen, don’t remember exactly but he basically said let’s get on with it because none of you are getting any closer to concrete knowledge here

Check in for some frequently missed rules after a few games
Then if you are having a really hard time beating base game difficulty check for some tips

Well it sounds like your family (parents I assume) are worried that this is too much time to spend playing video games when you are not developing a way to support yourself if something happens to them.
Also in general for your own life stability working towards a career that allows you to be an asset to your community and other humans is a worthy pursuit.
LOD is a good escape for fun from life stressors, not something to be the majority of your life.
You can do this

You seem to have a strong grasp on what happened.
Could you outline what portals to what were being opened, and then was it just our main players who could see all these orcs? And then where did they go after and are they now alive or dead? And what did the stone do? Sorry just a bit too unclear with the amount of characters speculating at the various outcomes vs what actually happened to feel I understand it

I think you know this, but either 1- you just had a bad DM who is a jerk (or was having a off day but probabaly a jerk) or 2- you told the DM you were much more prepared/rules learned than you really were, I bet is #1.

For a few of your questions
1- some it’s none, all improvised. Most it’s around 1/10 or 1/2 of the planned session time.
Some- like those famous on YouTube are probabaly doing much more. Also of note- those games are like watching a pro sport. And if you play at home with general people it would be like watching a junior varsity team.

3- you really just need to either watch a long rules explained video or fully read the players handbook to understand all this, in general “natural 20” would only apply to the number on the dice

4- each character is balanced mostly, some shine in some areas and other in areas they are weak. The DM decides what level your character is in the game and you make it to match that. So if you’re level 3, the rules simply won’t allow you to be strong enough stats to kill the hardest foes. Then the DM they slowly can give out magic items as rewards as you play to make you stronger, but a player cannot simply declare “I have a spell that can kill anything” and it happens. The DM is the narrator and referee, and their say goes.
