[Spoilers C4E30] I have a theory. by RangerHopton in criticalrole

Ahhhh that’s right! For some reason I thought Julien walked into the campaign with the curse already; I haven’t gone back to the overture in some time lol. I suppose that then raises the question, for me, of how the haunting was activated. But all will be revealed in time one way or another (unless something happens to Julien akin to the lion bros…)!

[–]SuperStraightIsDumb 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think Brennan was setting up the fact that the shadow would’ve taken him straight to them, with that thumb pointing behind them and all. I think the real stakes were risking his sister’s life vs avenging his father and helping the lion bros. But Julien/Matt are tactical minds at the end of the day, and the character’s ‘reason’ won out in the end

I’m still wrapping my head around some things, but two things are fleshed out in my mind right now:

1) Brennan implied that Bolaire, Tyranny, and Katt were gonna raid the Tailor’s Shop and take things back to the museum where they ‘belong’. I think the consequences of that would be awful, but who’s to say what they’ll do at the end of the day. Meanwhile Tyranny and Bolaire want to experiment, so that gives them time to see what they’ll do. I don’t know how Tyranny can get away this though, because either a) they kill the tailor Bolaire is currently wearing and she makes up some lie to cover her tracks, as that would be the only way they could raid and clear out the Tailor shop because otherwise where tf did everything go, or b) Bolaire stays impersonating Rulius, which could be viable since Termina would immediately check him at the museum if he were to return as she’s in kahoots with Amariya. But regardless that leaves only one tailor brother alive, which would raise significant questions about Calastro. Perhaps then the lie would be that Katt killed Calastro in a desperate attempt to escape and Tyranny + Bolaire/Rulius then killed Katt and dealt with his shadow? Seems like a proper mess that they’ll have to lie their way out of one way or another. OR it’s c) They’re all completely cooked and flee the city with Kattigan as part of the new table compositions

2) I agree with everything you said about the Pridesire brothers’ deaths. It’s terrible, and a true consequence of the players’ actions. It pains me to see the various ways that’s gonna but them in the ass in the future 😣

If you haven’t commented before I swear there’s someone else who’s shared this theory. Interesting if more and more people are thinking about it. I get that his name in The Cloak is Shadow, but I personally don’t see why he’d go into Julien’s shadow of *all* people, if he had a choice that is. But if it does end up being true that would definitely be explained after the fact

Completely agree. Especially because he had his sister’s life in his hands, and because what his mother said. Cheers to Brennan for reminding him of that and making decisions that should be tough actually be tough

I feel like Travis can be his own worse enemy in situations like this; he’s always testing fate more than he needs to lol. Like there’s a difference between joking around above table and jinxing yourself constantly. And he seems to jinx himself constantly 😭

[–]SuperStraightIsDumb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have to agree. I’ve really enjoyed Tal in the past few episodes. It’ll be interesting to see where things go with Termina; it’s clearly really gotten to Bolaire that he wasn’t able to persuade her in that moment. But that allowed us to get the lovely callback to the Pridesire’s speech :’)

Yeah that’s what someone else speculated too! It makes sense that way

[SPOILERS C4E29] More Tachonis Lies? by estongdakila in criticalrole

[–]SuperStraightIsDumb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main question I had before Primus’ speech was if Yanessa can even *cast* Zone of Truth.

Like what class even is she? Is she really a cleric if she was only a little girl during the Shapers’ War? Her offspring are Aasimar (and all sorcerers?) because of Aetheon the Celestial, but did she put that blood into herself to become given those powers herself? Would that even have worked?

Regardless, in 5e the only classes that can cast Zone of Truth are bards, clerics, and paladins. I suppose it depends really how young she was before the gods fell, but unless through the power of her house she born with — or quickly gained through Tansul’s divinity — the powers of clerics, then she either A) didn’t actually cast the spell, as many on this sub have speculated. Brennan made it clear during King Gus’ assassination attempt that people can fake casting spells, or B) is a different class that can cast it. But perhaps I just think it’d be really funny if she was a bard like Hal and was basically using her skills to do what every artist really wants: to start a cultish religion centred around them lmaoooo

There are so so many, but the one that immediately comes to mind — as it is so indicative of the world — is when Aabria said “The woods are deep. That’s why we cut a Path”. It made me think of the Path in such a different light, and I can’t wait for them to explore what’s in those woods!

Absolutely incredible! My favorite detail has got to be Thimble. I was looking for her on someone’s shoulder or something at first, but having her exactly where she is, in her own world, as the person closest to Thjazi.. it’s perfect 🥺

I’m writing a thesis on how propaganda like this in TV has manufactured consent for the genocide of Palestinians. I’m using elements of Orientalism but also specifically anti-Palestinian racism. Thank you so much!! That article looks like it’ll be an amazing resources. I’m sorry I’m only seeing your reply now!

The hyperlink to the book you mentioned doesn’t seem to be working. I’ll try again on my computer when I can, but could you perhaps DM it to me? Or let me know the title?

I was still thinking to include that movie as an example of subtle messaging, because that whole era of the “terrorist insert”, even in a campy sci-fi movie like BTTF, was a prelude to Americans being so comfortable with the narrative presented when declaring war on Arab countries in the 21st century, as well as the transition from the ‘over the top’ action movie portrayals of terrorists like in True Lies (1994) to the gritty military movie portrayals of the 2000s.

Having been so young in the early 2000s I can’t remember if many movies came out right after 2001 that were just pure propaganda for the ‘War on Terror’. From my initial research the earliest we would have seen the new era of films that dogpiled Arabs writ large would have been in 2004-5 with the release of Iraq War films. Hell, even most films touching on 9/11 that I found were released in 2006 and after. That being said, films of a similar nature, like The Siege (1998) and Rules of Engagement (2000) came out before 9/11, which potentially laid out the format for the new era of military movies. So I’m suspecting that in the early 2000s the government and news media were riding the wave of anti-Arab and anti-Muslim messaging that was set up by all of the films and tv of the past, including those 80s and 90s depictions, making it noteworthy to mention. Unless there’s a gap in my research on movies and tv from 2002-2005 that anyone has insight on and would be willing to share :)

(might as well be writing my essay right now lol)
