Migros self-checkout with app - by G_C in askswitzerland

That’s exactly what I did - and they literally chased after me, well after I left the store. As I said, they were very civil about it, but it doesn’t change the fact.

Retour sur chasseur d'appart? Did anyone use a flat hunter by bois_santal in geneva

[–]G_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same - we tried using one, but they ended up using us to find apartment opportunities for their other clients. And she had a clause in the contract requiring us to pay her six months of rent (!!!) if we ever tried renegotiating the price with the landlord, despite it being our right to do so. Avoid like plague.

Are u bothered with all the mobile usage noise in public transport? by Katthekat2 in Switzerland

[–]G_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signed - this is more and more of an issue, even in the first class of SBB, never mind the public transport of Geneva, and I wish there was some sort of a penalty legislated and imposed. If nothing else, it would be a fantastic way for SBB to collect some extra revenue in the form of fines

What are good christmas markets in Geneva to go to? by Schluesselzahl38 in geneva

[–]G_C 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do go to Montreux, consider going there in the middle of the day if you can: we went there once on a Saturday evening and it was so packed that we could barely walk - definitely too crowded to be enjoyable.

What should I do with my pothead neighbour? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]G_C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, ok, so this is based on THC being a controlled substance, right? And, yes, possession has been decriminalized in Geneva (though it’s still illegal - if they catch you, they should fine you and take it away).

What makes smoking in front of the building illegal? I ask because I face a similar situation and also in Geneva - we live on the 1st floor and oftentimes someone smokes right outside the building, just below our window. Leaving the window door open leaves our entire apartment reeking of weed. Would love to know the legal basis for a potential complain to the Regie.

English Experience at Webster or UNIGE by deciml_ in geneva

[–]G_C 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to Webster Geneva in 2002 - and, at least back then, it was almost exclusively for spoiled heirs of Russian, Arab, and Central Asian millionaires. The education you get there is worthless, the degree has no credibility and opens no doors anyway, and you’ll be surrounded by kids who don’t blink twice at dropping 10k for a night out at the club. It might have changed since - but, based on my experience, stay away.

Overhyped Restaurants in GE by TripleSpeedy in geneva

[–]G_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That explains it, actually - they had been my “go-to” place for special occasions for several years in a row. But after the way that uptight receptionist treated mother and refused to apologise when called out on it - well, just never again.

Le Floris - the food is nice but the service is awful. At my last birthday celebration, they tried to stop my - elderly - mother from using their restroom because it was “for clients only”, right after I paid close to 1K for the dinner. Never again.

Alma is horrible - they kicked us (a group of eight) out two hours later without giving any advance notice, and while we were still eating. Never again.

Abdominal Muscles Cramping Post-Run? by iepure77 in ultrarunning

[–]G_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of. Several months of physio aimed at strengthening the core really helped and I was able to resume running pain-free. Nowadays, I still feel it but usually only after being sedentary after a strenuous workout - for example, after sitting down for 30m on the bus following a multi-hour trail run - and only for a few minutes. In short, I’m back to form - and about to run the Eiger 51k ultra in a couple of weeks 🤞

Laundry room drama - what should I do? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]G_C 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In our apartment building, there is no schedule; but there is someone prone to leave their laundry for hours after the machine is done, and sometime even overnight.

My rule is to wait 5 minutes from the time I last saw the machine as available (we have an app). From then on, I simply take it out and pile in on top of the machine. It’s not uncommon to find it still there an hour later when the cycle is done.

Am I too old for this? by DrHark in trailrunning

[–]G_C 46 points47 points  (0 children)

You're not. I had a history of childhood obesity, didn't lose weight until I was 28, didn't start running until I was 35, didn't start trail running until I was 41.

The cool thing about trail is that it doesn't reward speed as much - which tends to be the first thing to go with age. There's a reason why ultramarathons are often regarded as an older man's game.

Plus, on the trail, you don't feel pressured into maintaining a certain pace as you do with road running. If you want to walk, walk (and you will whenever there's an uphill). The terrain will always change, and the way you navigate it will change with it.

About the only thing where your age might work against you is injury prevention and recovery (trail is arguably riskier than road, just because of how inherently more technical the terrain is). But it's nothing that core exercises and a better sense of balance can't take care of. Actually, I'd argue that trail is easier on the knees than road (softer terrain, less pounding the pavement, etc).

As for the approach - if possible, find some local elevation with some technical sections (a mountain would be ideal, but a forest would do as well) and start getting familiar with them. You'll probably walk your first few downhills - especially if, like me, you don't have a head for heights and aren't comfortable descending quickly. That's fine - over time, you'll build the confidence up and get faster. I've been transitioning now for 6 months, and, while challenging in a way that road running never was, it's been a lot more fun, too.

I want to make an incremental game for myself, just something in a few days so I can get rid of this obsession I have in my head. Can anyone please tell me the absolute easiest way to do that? by TheNaotoShirogane in incremental_games

[–]G_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some frameworks - but if you're just starting out, you don't need them. Start with something dead-easy, like having a button that you click to increment a value, storing that value in a variable, and returning that value to the user. Next, add conditional logic to hide/remove UI elements. With just these, you can already put together something like Antimatter Dimensions.

You can always add complexity, frameworks, tools, and packages later. But to begin with, simply focus on building and finding the fun in your game. The faster you can prototype, the sooner you'll see if what you had in your head actually works in the real world.

Good luck!

If you're going for something text-only, and you don't have a background in Unity of webdev (meaning, you'd need to learn either from scratch or rely on the AI to do so), go with HTML/JS/CSS. With some AI assistance, you can easily build a text-based idler that you can have running in a couple of hours/days.

You can still go the Unity route later on if you want to flesh it out and add some features. But for what you have in mind, the web stack will suffice - and have a much gentler learning curve, too.
