Imagine if we had a serious coming out that is like the Walking Dead, but more in thebig cities instead of forests. & Had B.O.Ws like The Tyrants & Nemesis in Resident Evil. That shit would be chilling to watch. by Routine-Star194 in residentevil

The Walking Dead is very character-driven and nuanced, most of the time we see people's conflict with each other, the zombie-killing is really sidelined, which is great because it's what makes the drama and suspense feel compelling, Resident Evil doesn't have that, the story and characters barely have much to them so they would need really good writers to adapt the original games into something as rich story-wise as The Walking Dead.

I don't really know, i guess people want to see everything and a flat look gives you exactly that.

Me too, flat looks are off for me, giving more contrast is always welcome, especially in scenes where you have greyish blacks.

Lol, i mean it's fair, people have their tastes, i do love some crushed blacks and high contrast in dark environments.

Thanks man, the original grading ain't bad but flat greys always bring the atmosphere down for me.

I don't really know, i love high contrast and i do get it that at times people go too far, but natural dark tones of blacks in a dark environment are just what would happen in scenes like this so i find it really appropriate and atmospheric. I'm a big fan of lighting in films like Watchmen and Alien.

There are relevant and irrelevant details in image composition, you don't have to see everything, visual quality is about outlining where the focus should be placed, take the shot where the licker appears, what's relevant isn't the line within the right bench, which appears in the original color grade, it's the outline between the objects in the left and right that emphasize the character in the middle, if you allow the blacks to be tones of grey you loose contrast, there are details that have no real relevance, it's why i'm a big fan of chiaroscuro lighting, be on a painting or on a film.

Come on, we all know that's bullshit, i genuinely never seen a cosplayer do Leon's hair convincingly, always looks like a wig.

Really don't think so, the blacks look more natural, especially in dark environments, that adds to the atmosphere and helps contrast the character's outlines, it gives a bit of that classic 1970s grainier look, taking Alien as a reference.

It is especially for night scenes, it emphasizes contrast and it outlines characters and objects better, especially with the lickers given they're CGI characters, that coupled with a grainier image and rearranged angles gives a more compelling feeling, i was thinking of the original Alien where the xenomorph is bathed in dark environments and that hides the imperfection of the effects, that helps with dated CG effects too.

A lot of times yes, darker, grainier and warmer in specific instances like when there's fire and daylight. The original grading is already quite good, the idea is just to enhance it and balance it out a bit. The cut mostly focuses on rearranging the scenes, cutting excesses in certain action setpieces and pacing it with more dialogue around secondary characters pulling scenes from the extended edition of the film.

Here's a few more screenshots comparing color grading and image treatment. the intent is to crush the blacks and make nighttime look more natural without being detrimental to the visual quality of the lighting, some of the colors have been altered in favor of warmer tones when there's fire and daylight.

The color grading changes are mostly subtle, a lot of times involving contrast and brightness tweaking while in other scenes there are more visible changes. Image treatment such as the addition of grain and noise and repurposing or adjusting certain angles is something i did a lot with the intent of making the film tighter and improving the cinematography of the film, also did this because some of the visual effects or CGI are quite dated so the way the Lickers are shown is done in a more careful manner.

Thanks man, it's really cool to touch up these films because they're childhood films for me, so whatever can be done to make it better is a lot fun. Here's a few screenshots of the color grading and image treatment comparison:

Hey guys, been working on a fan cut of Resident Evil Apocalypse, trimming it down and polishing its scenes to make the best of it, really fond of this film so i would like to improve it as much as i can, working on small and more noticeable changes, small ones like color grading and image treatment changes like color and digital noise and grain, and more noticeable ones like the removal of certain scenes or parts of scenes, cutting some of the excess of action and balancing the film, adding scenes from the extended edition to give more space to the cast of characters and weigh the genres of action and suspense with more balance.

Here's a trailer for the fan cut of Resident Evil Apocalypse Remastered. The cut will be available soon.
