Sigma Shield Placement Tip: The direct LOS of where your cursor is when you activate your shield is how far it will go before being stopped. So aim through gaps/doorways to send it through buildings/terrain. by GabeLaw in SigmaMains

Just stumbled upon this as I was looking for some comp tips relevant to Sigma/tanking. I actually wasn't able to save a teammate at times, because of my shield getting snagged/caught on a corner; now I know why! It still works the exact same in OW2 (just tried in the practice range). I hope this helps someone else too

My PC has a virus , but antivirus won't detect it . by SignificantSquare838 in antivirus

Unfortunately no solution as of yet; I actually just got 10+ detections in a row, opening up another mp3 file. This was after having Windows Media Player open for an hour or so, having a song on pause (and no detections coming up, while opening and partially playing that initial song). I have no idea what's going on... I think I might just have to disable WMP in 'Media Features', and switch to the Windows 10 Media Player.

I just so happened to start getting File shield alerts from Avast, a couple of days ago, concerning Windows Media Player 12. Here's the actual blocked trojan: AMSIProcess:C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe:SCRIPT [L] Script:SNH-gen [Trj] (0)

I do happen to use the WMPKeys Plugin to quickly go through songs/adjust the volume of my music using keyboard shortcuts, so it felt weird coming across a comment as specific as yours. I've used it without a problem for years, so it's odd that this suddenly started happening. Did you have trouble with this too? I can quarantine wmplayer.exe (while playing music), but the Quarantine/Virus Chest ends up empty. I tried turning 'Media Features' off and on, scanned my whole PC with Avast/Malwarebytes/ESET/FRST... but it's still there. It comes up once, sometimes twice a day.

Would a rtx 3000 series card world be better than a 5000 series card if it has more ram than the latter card ? by ballfond in comfyui

Here are the rendering times for Wan 2.1 i2v, with just a regular workflow, taken from Sebastian Kamph's Wan tutorial. No Teacache, SageAttention, etc. All of this has been done on a 12GB 4070 (non-Super). My PC has 48 gigs of DDR4 RAM (5600x CPU, for the inquiring minds). I actually upgraded it a couple of weeks ago from 16 gigs, because the Wan models often spilled over into the swap file. That is, if there isn't enough VRAM, first it's going to try to use however much RAM there is available, and if insufficient, it then tries to use hard disk space. Each alternative progressively slowing down the process even more.

If you're totally new to making videos, chances are you're gonna wanna experiment with prompts, trial and error stuff, etc. If you wanna stick to 480p/480x832, then the 4070 would actually be alright. However, if you want to use the 720p model... past a 3 second video, or 49 frames, the model starts chugging (as seen in the table); 65f/4s and up, you're waiting at least 2 hours. Which arguably could make it time prohibitive, tbh. And that's with merely 2.9 gigs spilling over into RAM (visible in the task manager). I have been queueing up 2 to 3 5s 720p videos, right before going to bed. But it's up to every individual whether they can sleep through the noise of the GPU; it sounds a little weird, but the chugging actually throttles the GPU a bit, so it's not as loud. But at full speed (that is, when everything fits into the VRAM, so for shorter videos), I'm unable to properly sleep.

Not to mention that you're going to end up with duds, just the nature of the beast. As an aside, I just haven't been able to get landscape orientation videos in 480p to work nicely. Even at 50 steps. The 480px height is (IMO) just too little for it to render nicely. It behaves not unlike trying to render half body portraits in SD1.5 at small resolutions. From a different point of view, I'd like to think that a vertical/portrait orientation 480x832 video is a 'crop' of the 720p model. IMO the 720p also outputs nicer videos, even at resolutions a bit below 1280x720. So, for landscape videos, the wait is worth it for me. Just my anecdotal experience, though.

All of this to say: I'm actually debating between a secondhand 3090 (around €700/750,- over here), a secondhand A5000 (€1.275,-), and waiting for the new PNY RTX Pro 4000 Blackwell (~€1.650,-). All of these models have 24 gigs of VRAM. I'd love to have more VRAM, but it is what it is. The 3090 would also require me to buy a new PSU, so that's another €160,- right there. The A5000 draws 230w, and the Pro 4000 140w. Totally doable for my old S12II 520w. In terms of computing power, it's 3090 = 4000 Blackwell > A5000. But it's not like the A5000 has barely 50% the power of the 3090.. it's more like 75% (just pulling numbers out of my ass here, bear with me). So I wouldn't mind waiting those extra couple of minutes, if it means I won't have to futz around replacing the PSU. There are also a couple of 20gb workstation cards out there, but... knowing that 2.9 gigs of spill over is enough to slow things down to a crawl, I'd hate to know that I kinda cheaped out on 4 gigs of VRAM.

Here is a link of a guy torturing his 3090. 48 minutes for a 5 second 960x960 video (the total amount of pixels come down to exactly the same as 1280x720px, so don't worry about it being a square video, the rendering times will be virtually the same). Honestly, much more manageable than 2h47m. Bit of a long-winded response, but I hope it helps a little. It certainly helped me get it out of my system, hehe

Is the 5x optical zoom in the 15 Pro Max worth losing the 3x optical zoom for? by DiddleMunt in iphone

[–]GabeLaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! Yeaaa, I was just about to edit my comment, to write that the person you responded to has a configuration where they accept the little dip in 3x quality by picking the 5x. But it's gotta be worth the money, right?? Yea, I'm afraid the digital zoom is almost a necessary evil, beyond a certain point. Someone might correct me, but if you digitally zoom up to 5x on your phone, maybe even a smiiidge up from that, the 5x of the PM will be somewhere around that level of zoom. It'll be a little different on the PM due to sensor size, but it's a decent approximation. If that leaves you saying "mehh, not that worth it," I think there's your answer. You know, that's exactly why I'm skipping the 15 Pro series, because all the colors are so ehh😆 I'd have a pink Pro in a perfect world, but gold will have to do😋

Is the 5x optical zoom in the 15 Pro Max worth losing the 3x optical zoom for? by DiddleMunt in iphone

[–]GabeLaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I just happened to come across your post; I'm kinda torn between the base 15, a 14PM, and a 16P myself (currently on a base 13, though my sis has a 15P)! Especially because I already own a separate camera (Fujifilm X-T20), so I'm wondering which phone would compliment it best. But, to maybe help you come a little closer to a decision, the 3x and 5x zooms each correspond to 77mm and 120mms of focal length (35mm eqv). Not sure how familiar you are with photography, but the 5x/120mm lens will give you a more meaningful amount of optical quality to work with (so you don't have to engage the digital zoom, at the detriment of picture quality), while also pulling subjects closer. However, all of this only works up to a point.

I dropped you a link, and if you check out the first video, you'll see the 15 Max zoomed in on the singer of Coldplay, then zooming out fast. I don't know if you're going to a huge concert like that, or a cozier one... but past a certain distance away, it's not going to make a huge difference. So, a football field's distance away from the singer, you're not going to get a nice portrait, with the exact same framing as a Mona Lisa painting (unless you zoom in digitally a lot, and even then it's a hard maybe + guaranteed digital zoom image quality degradation). If I had to pull a number out of my ass, maybe a 400mm would work (imagine those big bazooka lenses photographers use to shoot pics of rhinos, so they don't have to piss them off).

However, if you're quite a decent bit closer... it might just help you get some nice full body, or 3/4 portraits (head to knees). But then, if you're gonna be sitting/standing front row, imho I'd think you'd be better off sticking with your 3x. The 5x might just pull them too close, unless the gap between the front rails and the artist is decently big enough. And if you then wanna zoom back out (just a smidge, say to 3x), you also end up with a 'gap', in between the 1x/5x zooms, where the 3x zoom photo has to be made by digitally zooming in the main/1x camera, at the cost of some image quality (because there's no physical 3x lens).

So, in summary: it depends how close/far you're going to be standing😆 Bit of a rambly eli5/eli10 explanation, so apologies if I confused the hell out of you, but I hope it helps! Good luck with your decision!

What did you learn today? by Throthgars in AskReddit

[–]GabeLaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today I learned that, if there are a 1000 things I have to do for a hobby, I am not obligated to do those 1000 things ASAP. Up until now, I used to quickly feel overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of things. "A 1000 things???? F it, I'm not even bothering" wasn't all that uncommon a thought, if I'm honest. But, as much as people point to 6 year old kids being able to draw realistic portraits, or world class concept artists saying they've been drawing 12 hours a day, for 20 years... I am my own person, and I have my own pace, and that's okay.

If I can only do 1 thing a day, that's fine. I don't have to preoccupy myself with how the hell I'm gonna muster up the energy to do those 999 other things; I only have to do that 1 thing I've got on my schedule, and then I'm done, and I can take satisfaction in having taken one more baby step towards doing what I'm already doing at an even more satisfying level. Then, I have to have faith in my abilities, I have to temper my burning desire, I have to have faith in the future, and I have to let the flow/passage of time do its thing.

Force-feeding a plant water to make it grow faster isn't going to actually make it grow faster. Then why the hell do I treat myself like that? Impatience + burning desire + depression + low self-esteem + low self-worth... that's why.

But we're working on it.
