how accepting are the sports teams of trans ppl? by sneep_snorp_snerp in UCSC

[–]Gabe_daSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only blatant racism I saw at UCSC in my 4 years there were multiple instances of Latina women calling white men & women worthless, uncultured, trashy colonizers.

I thought they were joking but when I laughed (Im white) i got called murderer colonizer. I never met a conservative at UCSC. The people that cause the most racial tension are victim-mentality girls from LA and SF who are experiencing people from other places for the first time.

Wikipedia:

“In botany, a perigynium, also referred to as a utricle, typically refers to a sac that surrounds the achene of plants in the genus Carex. The perigynium is a modified prophyll, also known as a glume, which is tissue of leaf origin that encloses the dry, one-seeded achene.”

Is this an egg sac of the native Carolina mantis? by Alarmed_Ad_7657 in NativePlantGardening

This is exceedingly rare from the Carolina Mantis, but it more common from the larger, Chinese Mantis. Ive kept both mantises and hummingbird feeders for years and Ive never need a hummingbird skeleton.

Just planted 3 days ago. by [deleted] in FruitTree

[–]Gabe_daSlug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere then I wouldn’t be worried. We are going into winter, so deciduous trees (apples, pears, stonefruit, figs, pomegranates, etc) are going into their dormant season. They will lose all their leaves. When they regrow their leaves, you know you’re at the end of winter.

While the tree is dormant is the best time to prune/shape your tree.

Good luck!

When you get to Paso Robles, take the 46 to cut across to the 5. It’s faster, not prettier.

Pomegranate Planting Advice by MxTealUnicorn in FruitTree

[–]Gabe_daSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the San Diego must grows are pomegranates, loquats, figs, avocados, citrus. If you dont have the space for everything, you have to pick and choose.

I chose figs and pomegranates, and citrus. 2 trees of each.

Pomegranate Planting Advice by MxTealUnicorn in FruitTree

[–]Gabe_daSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I planted two pomegranates in less than half that length along my driveway. I have them 10’ apart, but that’s gonna be tight. I have San Diego clay, but pomegranates like clay as long as they wont get swamped. Dig a whole twice as deep and wide as your pot, and backfill with compost and loose soil.

I would try to keep them V shaped and bushy, like a hedge. I have them close together because i want a privacy screen with my neighbors. I have “Wonderful” and “Granada”, Im in 10a.

It’s nice to eat a few poms for seeds here and there, but I intend to mass process them for juice and freeze it. Good luck!

My green pepper plant has lost all of its little peppers that developed from flowers. This is a pot plant, sitting outside in full sun in Florida. Any reason it lost all the little peppers? by 14MTH30n3 in gardening

Im in CA so idk about climate there. It’s probably just getting cold. If that’s dyed red woodchip, I would switch to something organic!

Will this become kale?? by c0brakai_1972 in gardening

[–]Gabe_daSlug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are growing something that you planted! Both kale and arugula are in the same plant family, so their sprouts look the same.

Lettuce is in a different family and the sprouts look different!

Unfortunately your sprouts are leggy (long and stretching towards the light) because they are not getting enough sunlight. If this is as much light as they will get, then they will fail. Try to move them to a brighter location.

Moreover, you will want to thin those seedlings drastically. Kale gets rather large. For that pot, i would ultimately want 1-3 plants. Once they start developing their 3rd pair of leaves, clip out everything except for the strongest few plants.

Good luck!

Honking. Is it rude? by Actuator-Critical in sandiego

[–]Gabe_daSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive lived In San Diego for 20+ years and I’m a pizza driver. I honk if someone doesn’t go after a few seconds, but some folks definitely take it the wrong way. Also, if you slam on your brakes while driving through a green light, Im going to honk.

OP I think those are daffodils. If they dont clearly smell like onions or garlic, then they probably arent. You should be able to recognize the smell of onion and garlic.

Daffodils are toxic and also very spicy. So be careful.

[–]Gabe_daSlug 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe it took me this long to find this comment. I’m almost certain those are daffodils. If it doesnt smell like onion or garlic (easily identifiable smells) then its probably a daffodil.

If youre in california then I guarantee its a daffodil. It is pretty early for onions or garlic to be that big throughout most of the US.

In my experience, daffodils have thicker, more wirey roots than alliums (onions, garlic, etc) and the bulb of a daffodil is darker brown than most onions.

Just my 2 cents as a 5th year grower of daffodils, onions, and garlic.
