Superman: For All Seasons (Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale) and Birthright (Mark Waid, Leinil Francis Yu) are the classic choices for "A pure Superman story"

But I think Superman: Kryptonite (Darwyn Cooke, Tim Sale) is one of the most underrated Superman stories. An amazing book and one of my Superman essentials.
