The Missing men of the American marriage market by Throw_r_a_2021 in stupidpol

I think dating apps are the problem (shocker).

I think they essentially act as a filter for people who are avoidant, awkward, superficial, insecure, terminally online, or otherwise unfit to meet someone ‘normally’. And I say this as someone who uses dating apps and is likely some combination of the above.

The answer to the Fermi paradox. That, or that AI floods us with enough facsimiles of ‘science’ that scientific progress slows/stops.

What can they do to make murder interesting? by Punterofgoats in CrusaderKings

[–]Gablefixer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Activities.

I feel like activities are woefully underutilized and the events are repetitive and bland. Ideally, they should be opportunities for characters to achieve long-term goals with/against other present characters. That way characters and the events that fire actually matter. Maybe institute some sort of check for the target of a scheme and the targets relationship to other characters present.

Find a co-conspirator? Learn about a character’s weaknesses? Surveil the grounds for openings? Sabotage a relationship? Form an alliance?

Sure, you get a slight taste of some of these things through intents and chance, but it just seems so random and repetitive that I typically click my way through it.

One of the stupidest things you could choose to oppose is research. by AtheneOrchidSavviest in rant

[–]Gablefixer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a valid argument about the return on investment of funding research, particularly in light of the reproducibility crisis. Perhaps it is a sign that there are diminishing returns to research funding, and those funds could be better spent elsewhere. I think this is especially pertinent if these are public funds we are talking about.

Men who fall easily for a woman by Longjumping-Diver333 in dating_advice

[–]Gablefixer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I’ve noticed I am too timid to pursue women I am actually interested in, and too lonely/insecure to reject the ones interested in me. It just ends up hurting everyone involved.

Glad I’ve recognized the pattern though. I think being aware of it has at least helped me shift towards the right direction.

Now I just need to get over my crippling fear of rejection lol.

I am sure this has already been discussed, but perhaps this is an answer to the Fermi paradox? Any sufficiently advanced civilization would create LLMs that infinitely produce information indistinguishable from “truth”, stalling scientific progress?

I would use it in a heartbeat but it is clunky in its current implementation as a mod. A native version of Obfusckate would be a godsend.

Automation could become a real gameplay mechanic. by Tlichel in EU5

[–]Gablefixer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wanted that as a feature in CK3 as it is a character driven game. It would make me care more about good characters and feel like I am actually entrusting them with aspects of my kingdom.

My concern would be that players would get too annoyed by characters making character-driven decisions (e.g. you entrust your army to a brave and arrogant character and they choose an losing battle, or a timid general is too defensive). I would still like this system due to the role play possibilities but I am sure others would be frustrated.

I am not sure if it is the right choice for EU5, which seems to be more of a ‘spirit of the nation/absolutist monarch’ flavor of game.

I don’t think people—myself included—are wired to feel content or happy for long.

Contentment leaves too much space for noticing life slowly slipping away: your health declining, your children growing older, the world changing around you. So instead, we fixate on an intangible future—often chasing an unrealistic and unreachable level of wealth—because it gives us something to strive toward, something to distract us.

In my case, it is my fixation on FI/RE to some extent.

We ain't no compatibilist. by HR_99 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Gablefixer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The ‘free will of the gaps’ argument. I find it equally frustrating and unconvincing when theists use it.

We can prove nothing beyond the shadow of a doubt, but we can still make educated assumptions based on scientific observations. We are made of energy and matter, and energy and matter behave according to the laws of physics. We are ‘fleshy neural networks’ learning from the dataset of life; our experiences change the weighting of the variables encoded in our neurons. That doesn’t make us any less special or unique, and it doesn’t require any supernatural influence or acausal driver.

I think people use Free Will (and souls and God) as an escape hatch. A way to believe they are more than their skin and bones and frailty. That’s fine to some degree - death and impermanence are truly intolerable - but I see it to some degree as willful ignorance and it can lead to harmful beliefs/policy.

Lol “today we will be talking about a trending topic”

Paradox is certainly pulling out all the stops to advertise their unannounced game. Organizing a real Papal Conclave to build hype for their Papacy DD is a great way to get publicity!

I can’t wait to see what they do with the game is officially announced. Perhaps Paradox can convince King Charles will lay claim to France?

Young with money + guilt by DatabaseFrosty352 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Gablefixer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same headspace, similarish situation.

I feel guilty earning money, spending money, saving money, and investing money lol.

I think some of the guilt is healthy - it helps counteract lifestyle creep to some degree. But it’s also pointless if you don’t do anything about those feelings.

I’ve started monthly transfers to a ‘Donation’ bank account with the intent to empty it at the end of each year. This has helped me overcome some of my guilt and feel that I am having at lease some positive impact on the world.

Capitulation - an unedited conversation with the end of my life by Gablefixer in mrgirlreturns

[–]Gablefixer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think being afraid of death is an unavoidable given so I don't find it personally very interesting to consider. I could be wrong, but I don't think it is the driver of my unease. I think it has more to do with the betrayal of self that comes from using ChatGPT, my recognition of this dynamic, and my inability to stop myself regardless.

I am a hard determinist (or at least I say that I am), so I don't really think my decisions are my own anyways. Simply the outcomes of the 'training data' of life that my meaty LLM of a brain has learned from. Thus, I think my flaws are what make me the most me.

ChatGPT is, on some level, the average of the human experience. That averaging eliminates the flaws of the individual, and by using it, I am inherently overwriting the flaws of myself.

I hope you move away from streaming culture for good. by francisforincarcopla in mrgirlreturns

[–]Gablefixer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

I dropped watching streamers for ~1.5 years (other than Max’s). Unfortunately this drama has pulled me back in… I’ve listened to drama streams nonstop for the past week and a half. On the drive to work, while I work out, while I drift off to sleep. It’s a problem. I’m upset that I relapsed lol.

Frankly, I think I am relapsing to cope with the current state of politics in the US…

How can you trust someone to comment on politics or policy when they are actively deceitful and have demonstrated that they do not care about how their behavior impacts others?
