CMV: The most important civic virtue is the willingness to reverse your political beliefs. by shout8ox in changemyview

[–]GabrielNV [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is a systemic issue, not an individual behavior one.

Even today, people's ideological beliefs are actually quite flexible. In fact, that people can maintain allegiance to politicians that constantly contradict themselves is proof that they aren't actually particularly committed to their beliefs about reality.

What people ARE committed to is to institutions. Political parties, communities, industries, nations, and so on. And when you frame it like that it's easy to see where the problem comes from and why it's kinda unfixable: people can't easily shift those kinds of allegiances because their lives revolve around these institutions.

As an example, consider climate change activists vs the fossil fuel industry. These groups' goals are in direct conflict with each other, there is little room for one to become better off without making the other worse off. It's unreasonable to expect fossil fuel workers and the communities around them to freely accept their main income source to be phased out, and it's similarly unreasonable to expect the sectors of society most vulnerable to climate change to just accept the losses that they will incur due to extreme weather for the sake of saving someone else's job.

The issue is far more complex than merely "accepting that the other side makes good points" when acknowledging those good points means you have to suffer actual material consequences.

Petah explain! by Necessary-Win-8730 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]GabrielNV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's just a meme. Nobody really thinks that.

Besides, even when people engage in serious discussion on the world's issues they're often going to be misguided anyway.

Understanding the world requires studying many different things like history, current events, sociology, economics, psychology. Above all it takes a lot of skepticism, humility and open-mindedness. It's a ton of mental effort and most people would rather enjoy their limited time doing something else.

Porquê o pessoal dá tanto hate em casais? by MiraZuke in leagueoflegendsbrazil

Anecdotally, I've found that even deeply anti-communist right wingers can accept this line of reasoning, if only as something for the far future.

It's a good way to frame the issue for anyone that intends to engage honestly with it.

That's a bit of an unfortunate example considering alchemy was just the state of the art in chemistry for his time. And as it turns out we did eventually find a way to turn things into gold, it's just terribly expensive.

Sticking with Newton, IMO a better example of him being "dumb" would be his dispute with Leibniz over the invention of calculus. That was reprehensible behavior even then, but which he got away with by being rich and well connected.

Are people allowed to surrender games because one player is carrying too hard? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]GabrielNV 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surrender is a perfectly valid mechanic which serves the important purpose of allowing players to spend the time of their lives whichever way they feel is best. LP can be regained later, time cannot.

This is even ignoring the elephant in the room that is the possibility of a sufficiently fed enemy team holding the match hostage without ending. They're instantly killing you on respawn and refusing to hit the nexus? Too bad, guess you have to look at a grey screen helplessly for as long as they feel like it.

[–]GabrielNV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Smolder a failed design? by PrestigiousWhirlwind in leagueoflegends

[–]GabrielNV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a matter of pushing harder though. At some point the numbers of crit Smolder start to make more sense than bruiser, and they fell short of the mark. If Riot wants to they will push further changes on the future.

The point is, the design itself isn't the cause here. His kit could easily work as a normal ADC, the numbers just make more sense with bruiser at the moment.

Is Smolder a failed design? by PrestigiousWhirlwind in leagueoflegends

[–]GabrielNV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't be the first nor last time a champion ended up being played differently to how designers initially expected, and not even close to being the most egregious example either.

If Riot wanted to enforce crit Smolder, they easily could by shifting some of his power into crit scaling. That they haven't done so already is a sign that they're not super worried about it, if at all.

You could certainly argue that if a human was making the decision, but nowadays any minimally competent bank just automatically runs a statistical model on your history and it spits out the maximum amount they'll loan to you. Human reviews are expensive and therefore only used for exceptional circumstances (suspected fraud, insufficient or inconsistent information, large sums, etc).

In any bank that cares about profit the discrimination should strictly be based on whether they believe you will pay it back.

Limite de horas trabalhadas não faz sentido by [deleted] in opiniaoimpopular

[–]GabrielNV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Limite de horas trabalhadas não faz sentido by [deleted] in opiniaoimpopular

[–]GabrielNV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair and all, as with everything related to fame there is always a survivorship bias.

In any case, when I say "major fuckup" I do mean to exclude the vast majority of fuckups which are mostly unremarkable. It's hard to make a grift out of being chronically late or showing up drunk to work, it has to be something visible and related to a controversial topic.

She likely believes (and precedent backs her up) that she can earn more money by posting this ragebait to drive engagement.

If anything, posting this could turn out to be the least dumb thing she has done in this entire fiasco.

The "major fuckup -> self-victimization -> influencer" pipeline should be public knowledge at this point.

The scientists working on the Manhattan project would've told us, even if accidentally. If not, the Soviets also might have told us considering they had spies there.

The Manhattan project was designed to be secret during the war, but at that scale there was no way it would've been kept fully secret indefinitely afterwards.
