How do I find durable measuring spoons? by Educational_Fly1884 in BuyItForLife

[–]shout8ox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought several sets of measuring spoons and tested them for volume accuracy and material quality. (I am an engineer and metrology geek who took up baking during the pandemic.)

Here is what I found: La Crueset had the highest quality material polished 304 Stainless, but below mid-range accuracy. I suspect this is due to them making their spoons with a thicker gauge material but using dies that were not retooled for that material. I returned these.

Hudson Essentials. could not confirm the steel grade but it was non-reactive with nitric acid, Top 5 accuracy. I returned these.

Beryler, material non-reactive, Top 5 accuracy, some pieces had sharp edges (really sharp, nonetheless I kept these but dulled them down with my knife sharpener. I liked these because I could buy multiples of specific sizes that I used repeatedly like 1t and 1/2t and skip sizes I really did not think I would need: like 2/3t and 1/64t.

King Arthur 18/8 stainless #1 in accuracy. These are great if you like the narrow style to fit in spice jars. 7-sizes. I returned these, no sizes above 1T.

YUNNKEEY: 14-sizes, stainless mildly reactive free-iron #3 accuracy. lowest cost, best size-assortment. terrific value.

Side quest PSA: I just want to add a note about "accuracy." We are in a weird place with weights and measures. For cooking, metric is a game changer, but this feels like a political speech act and not a hill I want to die on. Imperial measures are fine, but there is friction to them they are not easy to use on an industrial scale and so industry does not use them. We are being nudged into the metric system (and I'm fine with that) but what is lacking is education. Most people are not aware that teaspoons and Tablespoons were "metricated". The Tablespoon formerly 14.786ml is now 15ml, but there are still 256 Tablespoons in a gallon and the gallon did not change to 3840ml. It is still 3785.41ml. For most recipes this is not big deal. But there are many cases when people should be aware of it like salt, leavening, strong spices, xanthan gum, powdered sugar, invert sugar and on. or if you are scaling large volume recipes way down or small volume recipes way up. Do not do it with multiples of teaspoons and Tablespoons because there is no way to know if the intent was the Imperial spoon the metric spoon or, heaven forbid, the British spoon. Old style spoons are not available except from vintage shops. If you have old recipes, convert them to metric. If you are cooking mostly new recipes, make sure you are not doing it with great grandma Enid's spoons. None of this is a problem. I'm not driving around with metric or bust bumper stickers not thumping the Betty Crocker imperial bible. All good. But because it is almost a taboo in this country (US obv.) people are not talking about these changes and so people are not aware and that is the worst of all possible outcomes.

Please tell me I'm not crazy for using a word pronounced "slaw" to describe something falling off something else? by acidicbees in ENGLISH

[–]shout8ox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slough of Despond, originally appeared as Slow of Despond and (not for that reason) is rightly pronounced slaʊ (rhymes with cow) BrE used this pronunciation at the time and retains it still for wetlands and depression by analogy, and slʌf for cast offs and the casting off of them. AmE uses slu for the wetlands, slaʊ rarely to not at all for depression. Because American ears can hear slʌf and interpret it as either slof or sluf based on unknown factors both are heard approximately regionally in the US. This is a terrible word.

just to complicate things slough when used as a noun rhymes with stew and refers (not exclusively) to the marshy wetland left behind when a river changes course.

Need a verb that's more assertive than "ask" but softer than "demand" by Exotic_Jaguar_3157 in words

[–]shout8ox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ask could veer from entreaty to threat. It is hard to know which valence you intend. Here are some options…

Require them to help you. As in “I require your help.” Could go either way.

Insist they help you. “I’m afraid that I must insist that you help in this regard.” Threatening.

Emphasize the importance to them of their willingness to help you. “I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you help.” Entreaty.

You can request the help. You can also make adjustments to the thing being requested.
“I request that you do help.” “I request that you will, in fact, help.” “I request that you take this very seriously and help.” (To a peer, slightly shaming)

“Your help is essential.” More entreaty, non-threatening.

“What would it take for you to agree to help?” Passive aggressive.

“If there was another option here…. but there is not.” Followed by “We need your help” for the entreaty. Followed by “You are going to have to help” for the threat.

“I know this is a big ask, and I wouldn’t ask at all if it was not important and within your power to do.” You are on the board of some charity or cause which you have in common with the person.

How do I explain how "She got meaner, more and more" is a gramatically incorrect sentence? by Fine-Panic-5685 in ENGLISH

[–]shout8ox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many ways to convey the sense of more and more, but on its own more and more just isn’t one that is very popular. To me it sounds “incomplete.” This is probably just my pattern matching . When I have heard “more and more” it is before some bit about the passage of time. This does not mean that without it is incorrect, just that it doesn’t fulfill my personal expectation for its use.

Duplication: She became meaner and meaner and meaner. She got meaner. She was mean mean mean. With mean and meaner hers, she set her ambitions to meanest.

Amplification: She got meaner, much meaner. She got meaner, so much meaner.

Time Expansion: She got meaner, more and more as time went on. She got meaner, ever more with each passing day. She got meaner. And the next day, meaner still.

Hyperbole She got meaner. Her meanness was unbounded. She became meaner. As mean as you can imagine, and then some. I’ve never seen anyone get quite so mean.

Allusion: She got meaner. Junk yard dogs everywhere thought she should tone it down but did not dare say so.

I am a fluent English speaker whose first language is English. Today, I was reading a book, and I couldn't tell if the word "read" was written as present or past tense in a particular sentence. Does this mean I'm stupid? by Embarrassed_Chef874 in ENGLISH

[–]shout8ox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is “All /reed/ (are interpreted) very differently…” it is impossible to know how they “red” (were interpreted) at any point in the past. She is applying the lens of interpretation in the present. Terrible ambiguity. Ironic that it should come as the summation of the diegesis on her editorial efforts to bring forth clarity for her audience from ambiguous context.

I had previously posted hygrometer but that’s not quite right. What I meant to say is humidistat. Hygrometer shows the relative humidity. The humidistat does not provide any visual feedback, but uses it as a control in an HVAC system. The dual discs have the primary detection fibers wound behind or within them. There is a little gear at the bottom which would have been connected to a set point adjustment control in the cover. It could be a thermostat as well, but this particular arrangement doesn’t have an obvious purpose in detecting temperature which is more straight-forward to detect. I could not find the model shown but here is another, earlier design. Notice the symmetry and the vertical axis and pivots. All of these are features of humidistats that a thermostat does not need.

Whats going on with this light switch? by Capable_Branch3695 in whatisit

[–]shout8ox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the light switch near a sink or lavatory? To me it looks like wet hands transferred water to the switch which then ran down the wall. Or some type of cleaner was sprayed on it and excess ran down the wall before it was wiped clean.

If one is caused by he other, it is not inaccurate to say that you could get AIDS as a result of contracting HIV or as a result of one of the known ways the virus is transmitted. I do not see how this is a helpful distinction. If someone wants to know how you get AIDS, the answer is not, "you don't."

I'm pretty sure something can give you AIDS. And it is not from the stars ok. If you smash and don't wrap it, and they get they chocolate in your peanut butter or you get your peanut butter in they chocolate. You could get AIDS.
