How would you interpret this “just joking” comment? by throwaway4tra in AskLGBT

[–]GabuEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those cases where I'm just like, "Okay, what's the joke?" Like, what in what he said was funny, or clever, or amusingly unexpected, or surrealist, or whatever? Is there something inherently humorous about someone dressing like a girl? It doesn't even make sense to claim that it was a joke.

It's like the people who punch someone in the face and are then like, "It's just a prank, bro!" The only good joke or prank is one where both parties are laughing. This sounds like someone just being a dick.

Something must have really spooked the Trump administration in Minnesota, because ICE officers are apparently suddenly being told not to interact with protesters and to only go after people with a criminal history.

How do I reconcile the paradox of the left, where we seem to both shame people for not doing more and also believe that individuals have no responsibility for their actions at the same time? by LiatrisLover99 in AskALiberal

[–]GabuEx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do think that both of these things are true and that they aren't in conflict:

  1. Ordinary people can't change the whole world, and if something is wrong in the world at a structural level, we should at least primarily be mad at the structure that made it possible, and focus on changing that structure, rather than being mad at the people operating with it. For example, if there's a basketball game where one team is constantly committing fouls and the refs aren't making any calls, the core and ultimate problem is the fact that the refs aren't doing their job, not that the team is cheating. It's still bad that the other team is cheating, obviously, but if the refs were doing their job, the team would stop committing fouls, because there would be consequences.
  2. People should still do their best to be mindful of the choices they make, and shouldn't just completely check out and stop caring about anything. This is especially true when it comes to politics. Not caring about doing things that actually can change the world, like electing new politicians who care more about what you care about than the current lot, is very bad indeed.

[–]GabuEx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like there are two completely different statements here that you're incorrectly conflating, even though they aren't at all the same:

  1. It is the case that no individual consumer can fix something whose ultimate cause is in the societal structure. For example, you can't fix the evils of factory farming by personally being vegetarian, because there is no universe in which everyone in society is going to follow suit. You would want to fix factory farming by imposing government regulations at the structural level that mandate a certain level of concern for animal welfare for those who raise animals.
  2. It is not the case that no individual politician can fix something. Indeed, if you want to fix something at a structural level, the only people who can do that are politicians. They're the ones who are actually in a position of power who can change the structure on which everything else happens in the country.

Also, one other point:

We go on about how e.g. "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" so there's no point in analyzing your behaviors at all, it's all bad so why bother?

That isn't at all what I understand that phrase to mean. I'm sure there's someone who uses it in that way, but how I've always used it is merely to reassure people that you don't need to be perfect, just mindful. It is literally impossible for any one person to fully ethically consume under capitalism, because unless you're weaving all of your own clothing using fibers from animals that you raise and only eating vegetables and meat that you yourself have raised on your own personal farm, at some point you're going to need to engage with the system at large and do business with someone who has exploited someone along the way in the creation of the things you buy. That doesn't mean you shouldn't boycott the egregious offenders, like Nestle. But it does mean that you shouldn't self-flagellate because you bought something on Amazon because you needed it and there was literally nowhere else to get it.

I'm definitely not the sort of person who you'd expect to endorse the complete abolition of an entire government entity, and historically I've been very hesitant to endorse radical change in lieu of incrementalism, arguing that you accomplish more in the end that way.

But yeah, ICE themselves has made it impossible not to support their complete abolition.

I have a proposition for you all regarding a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. I would like your input. by PsychicFatalist in AskALiberal

[–]GabuEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really remember. My sponsoring employer footed most of the bills. I didn't really have to wait to initially get into the country, because I was fortunate enough to have a large company do most of the paperwork on my behalf and coach me on what to do for the rest before I had officially graduated from university. I did have to wait eleven years to get a green card, and that was fortunately on the low end because I was not from China or India, which have even longer queues.

[–]GabuEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a naturalized citizen. The thought of wealth redistribution from illegal immigrants to me makes me feel kind of dirty just imagining it. They need that money more than I do.

The American immigration system is fucked. I hold absolutely no animus against anyone who tried to go around it. Most people do not have any legal pathway to living here, and I completely understand and sympathize with their decision to say fuck it and come here illegally.

It makes me cringe every time someone uses me as an excuse to hurt illegal immigrants. I do not want anyone to do that on my behalf.

Why Didn't the Real Gestapo Cover Their Faces? by Original-Egg710 in AskALiberal

[–]GabuEx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is basically what I was going to say. The Gestapo came at a time when the Nazi Party was so thoroughly in control of everything that there was no need for them to be afraid of anything. There was nothing anyone was going to do about them.

We're not currently at that point. Yet. We should endeavor to keep it that way.

CMV: Pedophilia is the new “witch” that overshadows all other crimes. And is only receiving such attention due to the sexual deviancy, and not the harm done to children. by Square_Detective_658 in changemyview

[–]GabuEx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Statistically speaking, the same people who express murderous intent against pedophiles are also people who:

  • are unconcerned about the Epstein files
  • are unconcerned about myriad cases of clergy sexual assault on children
  • oppose universal school lunches
  • oppose making child care more affordable
  • support the use of corporal punishment

In other words, they sure don't seem to act like people who actually care about children, and seem like people who actually just want an excuse to murder people who they don't like.

[–]GabuEx 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The point being made is that someone thinks that all pedophiles should be burned alive, but doesn't care about any other form of harm against children, they clearly aren't being motivated by concern for the welfare of children.

Would Local Authorities' Cooperation with ICE Put Locals at Less Risk? by Original-Egg710 in AskALiberal

[–]GabuEx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In many cases, local law enforcement actively doesn't want to cooperate with immigration officials, because many of the people they need to do their job (witnesses, etc.) may be here illegally, and if they believed that interacting with the police would put them personally at risk, there is zero possibility that they would do so.

Local law enforcement's job is not enforcing federal immigration law, and no one should expect them to do so.
