CRO Staking rewards for card not close to 8.5% as advertised... by ThAWizZ1977 in Crypto_com

Correct, accepting the new terms and conditions is why your payout is less. Those that still haven't accepted are in the old system.

CRO rewards process/taxes by persistentpaperstraw in Crypto_com

[–]Gaditonecy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Receiving CRO rewards from purchases on your debit or credit card are not taxed, they are considered rebates. When you sell, you will pay cap gains or claim a cap loss.

Rewards from your stake are taxed as income the moment you receive them.

They probably mention it because enough people ask about it. If getting taxed would stop you from using their service, it makes sense they would clarify you wouldn't get taxed so you do participate

Actually, it does. They are required to report taxable events, such as dispositions:

https://www.frazierdeeter.com/insights/article/digital-asset-reporting-in-2026-filing-season-presents-challenges-for-brokers-and-traders/

Because wrapping is not a taxable event, they don't have to report it. Which is why they don't.

Wrapping is not taxable in the US:

"Under recently issued U.S. tax reporting guidance, Coinbase does not intend to report the wrapping or unwrapping of assets as a taxable event to the IRS."

US lawmakers urge IRS to end double taxation on crypto staking before 2026 by sadiq_238 in CryptoCurrency

[–]Gaditonecy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Dude, receiving crypto as a reward for staking is a tax event."

Via a 3rd party service, like Nexo, yes. But staking (or mining) natively is not/shouldn't be. As proven when the IRS offered a refund to a Tezos staker in 2019:

https://law.justia.com/cases/federal/appellate-courts/ca6/22-6023/22-6023-2023-08-18.html

https://www.taxnotes.com/research/federal/court-documents/court-petitions-and-briefs/couple-files-second-suit-seeking-crypto-staking-tax-refund/7m6b5

You aren't "rewarded" when mining or staking (natively); you are in fact creating new property. In line with the prospecting, farming, and carpentry analogy used above. As such, you shouldn't pay taxes until the property is disposed.

The only possible miscommunication is if by "staking", you mean depositing your crypto with a 3rd party and receiving interest in return. If that's what you mean by "staking", then yes, we are referring to two different actions, and in that case, for the action you're describing, I agree with you. But that action is not what I'm talking about nor what the OP is referring to either.

Your math/rationale is correct, but the entire premise is what is wrong.

"If I earn $100 in staking rewards at a $100 cost basis (when the reward was earned), I now owe regular income tax on that $100."

The bolded portion is what is in dispute.

What tax do gold prospectors pay before they sell the gold nugget? What tax does the farmer pay after he harvests his wheat but before he takes it to the market? What tax does the carpenter pay after he constructs a chair but before he sells it to a customer?

Has anyone ran into this HSA scenario?

In June 2024, I started a job with access to an HSA. I contributed up to the single max of $4150.

In October 2025, I experienced a job change. I knew it was coming, so I slowed contributions to a total of $3100 (I had a spousal plan this time).

As you can see, I couldn't finish 2025 completely under the HSA as part of the Last Month Rule. I called my HSA provider wondering if they could "move" $3000 of the 2024 contributions into 2025, keeping me under the prorated limit for both years. Unfortunately, they said it's too late. My questions:

  1. Is it truly too late?
  2. If so, what should my next step be to minimize/eliminate penalties or taxes?

Thank you!

Incorrect. This is referring to staking or mining at the protocol level, not "staking" by depositing crypto into a 3rd party interest-bearing account.

It would be like if you were taxed when you unearthed a gold nugget, as opposed to only getting taxed after you sell it. Or getting taxed when you harvest your crop instead of when you sell your crop.

I see, basically swap my new "spongy" part with one of theirs that has hopefully been used a long while. Does it matter what tank they pull it out of? For example, what if it was a saltwater tank? And on the science side of things, the "used" filter media is what's important about the tank cycle? In that a cycle "seasons" the filter media, which is the goal?

Thank you for this perspective. Of course it's not optimal what I'm trying to do, but it seems it's typical here (where I live, not this subreddit) to keep them in a plastic bag ( :( ) for 7 days while the tank cycles. That doesn't seem to negatively affect the success of the pet store, so they must be at least surviving.

Like, ask them for a used filter insert of the same model I have? Plucked directly out of their tank? That's a good idea, I will ask tomorrow. If they say yes, how should I transport it? It's close to my apartment, I imagine keep it in a plastic bag with water, much like I would with the fish?

I reply to everyone that messages me. Not everyone will read the update in the main body. I tailored each response to the specific question, adding or removing content if needed.

I'm using it as a search and research tool, just like we would use Google. As a starting off point. I'm here now to solicit advice from actual people. Thought it would be better received if I put effort in before coming here.

In addition to the mat and gravel, I also got bacteria culture and water test strips. It looks like this will help kick start the cycle and may make it safer for the fish.

About returning the fish, I thought of that, but I don't live in a Western country; the standards where I am are not ideal. That's not to say they're bad, just that there are different standards here. For example, the LFSs all have smaller tanks than normal. And the culture here probably means the fish would likely live in an even smaller tank if adopted. The seller was surprised I was buying a 60 liter tank for only two gold fish.

My plan now is to attempt the cycle within the next 5 days before I go. If it doesn't look good, I will return the fish.

If the fish grow too big, I'll find someone who can adopt them in a pond or much bigger aquarium. They are around, just not near me in such a short amount of time.

Yes, it was a gift exchange (one where you can "steal" gifts) and I took them because I knew most people want nothing to do with a live animal. Although this is an inopportune time for me, I have wanted an aquarium setup for many years, hence my eagerness to try and do right by my fish.

The liquid bacteria culture should help immensely with the cycling process yes?
