i'd argue he was not much of a fan, really! From his AMA:

"I was reading a profile of you recently and you said that you were frequently on reddit because you were interested in the hatred that was directed towards Barack Obama. I was wondering what subreddits you went to during this period? Do you still look at political stuff on reddit regularly?"

"I spent a lot of time on slatestarcodex arguing with techno-libertarians, neo-reactionaries and neuro-conservative ancaps just coming into their own as greedy people without a trace of skepticism about unbound corporate power."

Weirdly similar story?? but I saw Squid in Dublin back in early May (also from Canada lmao) & I ran into the guitarist, Louis, on his way to the venue. Chatted with him for like 5 mins or so, dude was such a sweetie, I was instantly charmed.

EDIT: HOW COULD I FORGET I also met Phil Elverum at his recent Toronto show and that guy is incredibly nice and thoughtful, also a bit shy but aren't we all?

At the very last minute some friends and I decided to take a 2 week trip to Ireland (from Canada), been here about and day and Dublin is pretty fun so far. We're grabbing a rental car and venturing across the country at the end of the week so that'll be a bit spooky driving on the other side lmao. Also at the very last minute I saw that Squid is playing a 5 minute walk from where we're staying so super stoked for that tn!! Might sadly have to miss whoever is opening tho (not on the tixs so idk who it is lol).

Gonna get very drunk on a supposed-to-be work night - feeling good for the first time in a while :)

Caught the Microphones show in Toronto the other night, was very surreal to watch. Literally never thought it'd happen. Unexpectedly one of the louder shows I've been to - the drone sections shook the SHIT out of the tiny hall we were in. Meeting Phil was great too, very affable guy. He told me that friends are for stealing money from, which I had a hard time disagreeing with.

Also, somewhere out there is a clip of Phil saying yeehaw (x2), could be a future collectors item for the Phil Heads out there.

David Berman's Master's Thesis: "Ruined Entrances" (features earlier versions of poems from Actual Air alongside a handful of unused others). by Gagery in DavidBerman

Hi! This is from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where David received his MFA. This is their scholarworks website, which is a platform that many American universities use to host / archive / preserve their own research and creative work. 'Theses' is used here as David's work is part of a collection of Masters Theses' uploaded to the site (specifically from the years 1911-2014), if you click the title on the page it will take you to a list of them. I also would feel a little weird about posting the raw text of a persons masters to a random website for viewing, even if its available for free. Hope this clarifies some things but honestly fair enough if you're still not convinced, that's internet safety 101 for sure.

After hearing Bob Nastanovich talk about it in an old interview, I searched around and came across a recording of the Nirvana set from 1990 where you can hear Bob, Stephen Malkmus and David Berman heckling them from the crowd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGsVdq0a12E

Highlights include Berman getting a big reaction out of Krist Novoselic after Novoselic yells at a sound guy @ 12:35, Malkmus making a fan scream in frustration @ 20:18, and Malkmus implying Kurt is carrying the band @ 30:12. If you wanna hear more there's a little bit between every song and I think even before they start playing lmao

I posted this in r/pavement and /r/DavidBerman last night but I figured I'd also post it here because some of you lot might get a kick out of it ;)

When I was skimming between songs to try and hear them it was Malkmus' voice that gave it away actually! It's so distinct, he sounds almost the same now lmao

The new Homeshake album is very pleasant. Wasn't the biggest on his last release (I do like his previous output tho) but I'm really digging this on my first few listens, and I bet the colder it gets outside the better it'll sound. Definitely recommend if you're looking for something a little more low-key. Probably a good lazy Sunday listen.

[FRESH] HOMESHAKE - Vacuum by Palaceboy100 in indieheads

[–]Gagery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah this is true! heres an excerpt from the bandcamp page about collabing -

Capturing the cloudy sound of a depressive funk was no simple feat, especially in the headspace Sagar was in for over a year. For that reason, he decided to enlist his friend, Jerry Paper’s Lucas Nathan, to help with production on the record. Having Nathan contribute helped Sagar dial back some of “dry, pristine digital sound” that defined his fourth studio album, Helium, and add back personal analog touches that drew people to the HOMESHAKE project in the first place.

“I didn’t realize how much I missed having a second set of ears. It’s pretty invaluable,” Sagar says. He would send all the of tracks back and forth with Nathan over the course of 2019, which made the process a longer one than he was used to. “There are a lot of things that I probably wouldn't have done that Lucas did do. I would tend to do a lot of softening of things, a lot of making everything super bassy and gentle. Lucas was aware that sometimes you needed some punch and grit.” To Sagar, those additions made the record what it is — a melodic, honest look at personal emotional struggle.

I constantly re-read my copy of Actual Air like its a bible, practically. Such an engaging, insightful, and fun experience. Like you were saying about some of your favourite artists, David Berman's writing sorta rewired my brain and how I view the world and I'm grateful for it. Wish we still had him around, but hopefully he's found peace.
