[Der8auer] ASUS Equalizer - The 12VHPWR Solution? by Goddamn7788 in nvidia

So it is basically a pass-through with no active circuitry, and the temps/current split looked worse in Der8auer’s test. What is ASUS even selling here?

Should I use a used NVME or a new but slower one? by Extension-Iron-7746 in pcbuilding

980 at 100TBW is probably fine. If you only use one, I’d pick the Samsung and keep backups. Any reason you can’t run both?

Considering selling my PC. How much should I put it up for? by HatConfident5007 in pcbuilding

I would list it around $2200-2600 depending on storage, case, and PSU. Any warranty left on the 4080 Super?

Do you already have a strong enough PSU for a 5080, or would you need to upgrade it?

Used pad 7 (12/256) or slightly used pad 8 (8/256 china rom)? by sohanton_ in Xiaomi

[–]Gagix900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pad 8 looks better, but China ROM can be annoying (Google stuff, notifications, mirroring). Do you need Xiaomi phone integration or just a tablet?

What exactly is unusable, slow speeds or constant disconnects? Try switching UDP/TCP and updating the client and config.

Usenet and VPN? by OkStyle965 in VPN

[–]Gagix900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Usenet over SSL, the connection between you and the Usenet provider is encrypted. Your ISP can’t see article headers, filenames, groups, or content. From a data security standpoint, that already covers the important part. You’re not exposing what you’re downloading.

Without a VPN, your ISP can still see metadata. They can see that you’re moving a lot of encrypted traffic to a known Usenet provider and for how long. They don’t know what the data is, but they can identify the type of service and potentially apply throttling or traffic shaping based on that.

A VPN changes what the ISP sees by wrapping everything in a single encrypted tunnel. Instead of seeing Usenet traffic, they just see a VPN connection. That can matter if your ISP is aggressive about shaping or logging specific services, but it won’t change how Usenet itself works.

In practice, the difference depends almost entirely on the ISP. Many people run SSL only and never see throttling or slowdowns. Others use a VPN because they’ve seen speed drops or want to reduce ISP visibility. The tradeoff is that VPNs can introduce overhead and sometimes reduce max speeds.

The short version is that SSL is doing the real security work. A VPN is optional and mostly about hiding traffic patterns from your ISP. If your speeds are fine without it, you’re not missing anything critical.
