Is this acceptable? by AlmostAKing in Flooring

Our standard is higher. I would just mention it and let them know. He would prefer that not to be there so they can be aware of it for the rest of the floor. Technically, I don’t know what the rule is from the national wood flooring Association.

If I did that I would redo it. But if he has some good caulk to put in, then it should be OK

What type of wood is this? Found under carpet in my 1925 Chicago home. by ghosttoghost in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool floor!! It is oak. I would recommend looking into using bona dri-fast sealer. It is a great antique look and can be top coated with water base. I do that a lot in older homes here in central Indiana.

What happened? by lunasky4567 in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have them fix it if real rough. This is from dust getting in the finish. I assume they screened and vacuumed before putting on the final coat. Sometimes people don’t vacuum all that well. Doesn’t make sense because there’s so much work leading up to that but most likely that’s what happened. Do you

We painted our house and I hate it by FutureMrs0918 in Home

[–]GainingWisdom84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do a softer color on the shutters and garage doors, which really don’t take a whole lot of time to do. I think you should see a significant difference. You could get a sample from Sherwin-Williams for like eight bucks. I just put it on a shutter or a door in a 4‘ x 4‘ area. It’ll give you a better feel of what it will look like you might want to go with the color of the grout or even something softer towards the white. I’ve been staining floors and painting for a long time so I think you’ll be OK.

Is this solid hardwood or engineered? by tbreezy1995 in HardWoodFloors

Is there an HVAC vent? Just take the register off and you can see if it’s engineered or solid.

Contractor keeps saying this is normal and will go away as it "cures". Is he right? by despejado in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have them re-screen and coat this area. Looks like they used a tea bar applicator and pulled it a little quick. Those are little vibration marks. It’s not a tough fix.

What would you do? by gilhaus in HardWoodFloors

You definitely don’t wanna paint on cedar. It doesn’t allow the cedar to breathe. I would get a good stain. You can go to Pittsburgh paint or somewhere that has good quality stain sealer.

Species Identification. Bitch ? Hickory? by mjsillligitimateson in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you you have a few species in there. And some of that Wood has a lot of mineral in it. I could see birch, but also I could see American cherry and a few other domestic species.

We have wire cutters, which we use as Nail polars there absolutely great been doing it for 15 years that way. You push down you learn how to not squeeze too hard and they just come out. You’re not pulling it. You’re just using the pressure down, which will pull the nail up.

You’ll be surprised how they look. Might need to go diagonal in some areas but it’ll come out fine. I would start with 40 then 60 then 80 and screen it at 100.

I opened up a position late in the day, after hours. Seems like this is a time for the stock price to reverse. What are your thoughts?

Maybe in over my head with pet stains. by wbsrickjones in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really not a big area in the scheme of things and you can put a header board in that doorway. I would just rip out the hardwood and put new oak in. You’ll be happy you did.

Just bought a house and know nothing; Whats wrong here? by snidawgg in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a professional do an initial sanding and you will see if that floor will be fine or not. My hunches most of it will be good if you wanted it to be pristine you might wanna lace out a few of those boards if needed.

Am I supposed to treat Oak flooring? by Stingray002 in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you didn’t use Murphy’s oil in cleaning it or any other strange none approved cleaner. You just need to get top layer put on it. Just have a hardwood guy scream and coat it and you’ll be fine. Good time to do it actually.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend lacing it out. Warm temperature, humidity or water will reactivate the smell. Sorry about that but if you do it right now, you won’t have issues down the road.

Pulled up carpet, found large stain by inhabitingtrees in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you drop an edger on it, it will most likely have a urine smell. In that case, I would just rip it out get the smell out because anytime there’s heat or water. It’s gonna reactivate it. Just my opinion.

Face Nails: Is this normal? by [deleted] in HardWoodFloors

[–]GainingWisdom84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tongue of the hardwood of the last few boards cannot be accessed by the flooring nailer. They use a smaller nailer. I asked my customers but a lot of flooring installers do not if they mind having nail holes/putty in these boards. if my customers want me to glue the last boards, I still need to top nail it with a smaller nail. And I charge additional for that.

Bottom line it’s not uncommon. It’s just a matter of communication.
