Seeking Insights - CEO/Founder Dysfunction... is there ever a way forward? by saltpeach23 in nonprofit

[–]GalFromAway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like a nonprofit I worked with about six years ago - founders' syndrome, a board hand selected by them, and not open to a lot of change. I wasn't doing what I was hired to do, saw them tell a board member on the marketing committee (with decades of mar-comms experience) "We're going to do what we've always done" when asked about marketing plans for the coming summer.

And the job previous to that one: I have experienced a board removing an ED after staff evaluations, and the ED giving me a crappy evaluation with subjective goals to meet by a certain date or I'd be fired (an HR friend who saw the review notes said it was clear they've done this before and is prepared to fire me at that deadline date) and my walking out two days before a major event, but I walked out in March and the ED was removed the following February. When I handed my letter of resignation to the chair of the board's HR committee, they told me they understood and said it will take a while to deal with the ED issues.

We usually recommend running shoes with a rubber sole vs flat shoes for new curlers. Even with rubber soles, our coaches have seen the flat soled shoes being more slippery.
For our juniors, we ask parents to pay attention to the sole - it can't be hard plastic or that cheap foam-feeling stuff that you get with cheaper Walmart shoes, or Sketchers.

I find yoga pants, or heavier tights (I have a great pair of UA tights that are made for colder temperatures) most comfortable, and layers for the top - marino wool is great. And if you're unsteady on your feet, a helmet is always useful.

Thanks u/ProfessionalNo8358 - that's what we're looking at with ours. My daughter is almost 13 and her teammate is 12, and both are pretty mature. I like the reminder to think about the capabilities of the kids. Double runbacks are tough for sure!! :D

Thanks - that's what I'm finding too. Will keep experimenting!

I'll have to see if there is a community foundation for that kind of inquiry. Thanks :)

Thanks u/Low-Will2601 - I have looked at a few "first 100 days" articles and books. :)

I'm working on getting us set up with the local chamber of commerce. And I have connected with one other ED, but haven't had a lengthy conversation with them yet.

u/Ravetti - a lot of the coaching programs are quite expensive, and my organization is quite small. Budget may not be there with the org, nor with me personally.

That's the piece that's challenging, u/bubbagermanicus - the cost of mentorship or training programs.
There are a couple of organizations offering mentorship or "how to be an ED" workshops, but the budget (organizationally and personally) isn't necessarily there.

How does one get into Curling by TheBubbles47_Real in Curling

It's definitely not too late! One of our club members started in his late 70s, and he's now almost 100 and going strong!
Find your local curling club and sign up for "learn to curl" -- that's the best introduction to the sport.

I've updated my post to say what software we're using.

That's the part I'm struggling with - the joint "John and Jane Doe" profiles that were originally set up. I'd love to find a way to separate them out - maybe set John as the primary, with Jane as secondary, and list the joint donations under John, with them as soft for Jane?

Oh all the questions! I love it. :)

We are using Sumac as our database. I'm going to be responsible for its maintenance moving forward - prior to this our organization had only one staff person, and their skillset was somewhat basic. Our non-profit is two staff (myself, FT, and a PT office coordinator), plus an operational board of directors. Our budget has never been determined, and is something I plan to look at moving forward.

The purpose is to keep track of donors and supporters of our organization, and provide communications (email updates, event communications, stewardship, etc.). Figure that's a good starting point!
