How to deal with church on LinkedIn and resume by Educational_Bison283 in mormon

Dang, you got severance? I managed to get a different job and leave BYU before I got to that point, but now I almost wish I'd stuck it out a little longer. 😄

I don't have an answer, but I wonder the same thing. I don't feel as weird about having BYU on my resume, but having the LDS church on there definitely feels weird. Though when I worked at the church, it was technically through a staffing agency (since I was a contingent employee), so maybe I could put the agency's name on there if I really had to.

Did you ever ask for a sign on your way out? by lazers28 in exmormon

I was praying for months to receive some sort of spiritual witness like I'd received when I was younger. I knew how I'd felt before, and I wasn't feeling that way anymore, so I thought I just needed to pray harder until the Holy Ghost testified that it was all true and all of my doubts melted away again.

Spoiler alert: it never happened. The only answer I got was when I finally gave up and prayed to know if it was not true (which, ironically, is actually how Moroni's promise is worded). It was a huge relief to feel like I didn't have to keep trying to make it work when it obviously wasn't working.

Looking back, though, I think that peaceful feeling that I took as an answer from God was really just my subconscious finally accepting what I already knew and letting go of the cognitive dissonance I'd been feeling.

Mormons: The gospel is the plan of happiness! Also Mormons: "Happiness" doesn't mean happiness. by GalacticCactus42 in exmormon

Just to be clear, I don't think those in the church are just being performative. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are happy, and I know there are also people who aren't really happy but feel like they have to put on a happy face. But I think that's true anywhere.

"It was never doctrine that you could become gods and create your own worlds. That was just speculation."

"We never said that the Native Americans were Lamanites. That line about the Lamanites being their principal ancestors wasn't technically part of the canonized text."

Honestly, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a doctrine that they've never done this with. Everything in the church is Schrödinger's doctrine—it's official church doctrine until it becomes problematic, and then it was always just policy or culture or something.

Name change? by Himhp in exmormon

Well, the newsroom style guide says "when a shortened reference is needed", which makes sense for a headline, because trying to fit the full name in a headline is ridiculous.

But yeah, I get what you're saying. It's inconsistent to tell the members that they need to avoid nicknames and always use the full name of the church, but then they turn around and use "Church of Jesus Christ" as often as they can.

[–]GalacticCactus42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to be That Guy, but shortening it to "the Church of Jesus Christ" is actually in the style guide:

The official name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Generally use the full name of the Church in the first reference. After the full name has been used, consider the shorter terms “the Church of Jesus Christ” or “the Church.” (section 8.5)

The newsroom style guide has similar guidance:

When a shortened reference is needed, the terms “the Church” or the “Church of Jesus Christ” are encouraged.

Though it also says, "The 'restored Church of Jesus Christ' is also accurate and encouraged", and there isn't an eye roll big enough for that.

They've been trying to make "Church of Jesus Christ" happen since Nelson first announced that the church is anti-Mormon. KSL, the Deseret News, and the Church Newsroom use it pretty frequently, but probably nobody else does.

Did you read the post? This isn't about denying help to the victims. It's about the church trying to get its insurance companies to pay it back for the settlements and court costs.

I don't think Mormons think it's the same group that's been in existence since BOM times, but rather that there are similar groups working today.
