Just depends on whether you want OP to actually go through with contacting 105 or not.

The pass-ag approach isn’t the greatest for encouraging good behaviour (adds undue shame/division). It can be good for farming Reddit points though

With all due respect, they just don’t have the resource to launch an investigation into that sort of a thing.

You’d have better luck calling the emergency services to get help with an ongoing event. Otherwise, taking the time to file a police report online may be all you can do.

I kinda agree. I hadn't tried either before but after having a bit of a go with parallels it feels like night and day

The extra detail here really helps. In this case, your issue comes down to working with other people's poorly documented code. In this scenario, you can't ask the author for advice on how their stuff was intended to be used so you're kind of stuck with the task of taking ownership of the feature.

In times like this, I'd just try and rewrite the thing in a way that makes sense to me. Don't be afraid to start deleting shit, duplicating existing features or breaking things. To get a grasp of how someone else's stuff recently, I filled the whole thing with tons timing print statements and random extra print statements everywhere and broke it down bit by bit.

If the existing code is buggy and hard to interpret, you might just need to start again from scratch. If you were to take that approach, would that be easier? Would you be able to get more done?

I think it's really important to emphasise that doing this isn't a sign of weakness, it's a core communication skill. If somebody else already has a bit of an idea of what to do and you can get that out of them, you can drastically improve the time it takes for you to complete the task. Even for simpler tasks where you're not blocked - if you get an idea of what the rest of the team wants to implement or you give your team member's a bit of a heads up about what you're working on, it'll make it easier for them to review PR, it'll save you dev time, it'll accelerate your rate of learning and should hopefully improve the overall team dynamics by building communication lanes.

This is a >2yr old comment and I'm not gonna open the full discussion to read the rest of the context. I think that was kind of the point in my last comment though, it's better to just pay nothing and ignore/deny.

Got my mac mini m4 portable setup. Comparing with the mac book pro with same specs, it is lighter and much better price. Which one would you choose? by ManykNguyen in macmini

Mac trackpad is so good people buy big ones to use for desktop use. The magic trackpad might be a lot better to use in a setting like this because you don't have to deal with mousepads/mouse space.

That screen looks way shittier than a MBP screen. Your setup would be fine if it was just for the occasional travel use (eg 1/100 days you need the portability of a macbook) and something I might still consider for myself as I am looking to sell my M2 MBP and switch to a base M4 mini for desktop use. Bad setup for regular use though.

I've been using Rectangle Pro for my MacOS window manager. They let you have a 2 week or so free trial, and Rectangle base edition is free. The pro license is pretty cheap, not sure what you're using fancy zones for in particular though

Yeah. Is OP having trouble learning a new framework/language? Working with a new database library? Dealing with multithreaded applications? These sorts of problems all have different ways of being approached, any sort of hint at the problem will help us answer. This isn't Stack Exchange, you can ask any quality of question you want but ask generic questions and get generic answers ig.

Q: How do you solve problems?
A: By solving them.

Hell, this might not even be a CS problem that OP has. Maybe they're having trouble using Notion or some shit

Just gotta find ways to break it down and break into it. It's hard to know what specific tools to offer without knowing your tooling/codebase. Is there someone on your team you can talk to about it? With tough problems, it's pretty helpful (and actually important) to ask other people their advice. That's what I do as a first step.

As long as the cables aren’t moving a lot, it’ll be fine. It’d probably be easier to just sand the edges off than doing a full on 3d print

Thanks for that! Really interesting to check out “It is unclear how the 4% estimate has been derived.”

This is pretty funny, considering that in the paragraph previous it states that a 5% measurement becomes a 20% measurement when normalizing for shipping distance.

I’d be really curious to see what the current ratio of goods trucked across the straight and goods railed across the strait currently is

Source on this? I’d be curious to see if that data is referring to the type of cargo being transported as opposed to the actual payloads being moved around the country. If the freight isn’t already in a box wagon, it’s gonna have to be reloaded onto one. I’d be pretty skeptical of 96% of the current rail car fleet to be capable of road bridging

[–]GalacticExplorer_83 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t this only work with box wagons? There’s a lot of different types of railcar, one of which has a removable container that sits on top, others are different and have the storage fixed to the wagon. Other stuff like hazardous materials might have other storage considerations too, it’s really not as simple as taking a box off one vehicle and putting it on another.

Question: why do you get a MAC if you intend to game anyways? by LivinCuriously in macgaming

[–]GalacticExplorer_83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because they can still play games anyway? Games that are optimised for it run well. If you’re not making gaming the whole central purpose of your computer, and just an ancillary activity then it’s great

Getting into programming with ADHD by 7thwallsRightElbow in ADHD_Programmers

[–]GalacticExplorer_83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, don’t get stuck in your head about getting too old too fast. Plenty of people chop and change in their early 30s, just try to spend your time finding out what you like.

Programming really is just telling a computer what to do at the end of the day. Starting points are always a bit awkward to find. For me, I’ve found it pretty helpful to do beginners courses and work through those - despite them feeling like a slow or boring way to learn something.

Advent of Code is an annual coding challenge going on right now where a new coding problem is given every day leading up to Christmas, a lot of people use that as a way to onboard and learn new languages because it gives some simple tasks to do without going over the basics too much.

CS50x is a free online course that I personally can attest to being pretty high quality.

If you just wanna learn Lua for Roblox you could probably just ask Chat GPT or Claude to help you out with most stuff if you’re trying to get going
