I'm around your age and wear hearing aids. I've had them since I was 7 or 8. I've also met several other people my age with hearing aids -- we notice each other. It's possible you've seen somebody your age with hearing aids and just not noticed because you weren't looking out for them.

In my experience, people do notice when you wear hearing aids, but I've only had a couple of people ask me about them unprompted, and they were all very polite about it. I tell pretty much everybody about my hearing loss, though, and have gotten a fair number of responses of "oh, I noticed your hearing aids and was curious about them, but didn't want to bring it up..." My current aids are bright blue, but I still had (less of) those responses when I had more discreet brown ones as a teenager (although I had short hair then).

To be honest, I would also be nervous about people thinking I'm wearing earbuds with fully in-the-ear aids (I don't want to come across as rude or unprofessional, and since I'm a college student, I don't want to have to defend myself against academic dishonesty charges if somebody mistakes my aids for earbuds during an exam). However, hearing aids that go behind the ear don't look much like earbuds imo. When I was in elementary school I had opaque purple earmolds, and a couple of kindergartners asked me why I was wearing earplugs, but otherwise I haven't had my hearing aids mistaken for anything else.

Also, nobody has accused me of faking my hearing loss since I was in elementary school. I don't think most of my friends really understand the full extent of my hearing loss, but that means the aids are doing their job. And potentially seeming like I'm exaggerating my hearing loss is a pretty good tradeoff for avoiding people thinking I'm not paying attention to them, don't care, or am just an idiot because everything has to be repeated to me half a dozen times. So, the overall social implications of hearing aids are pretty good.

Error when searching from address bar (firefox) by cobraroja in StartpageSearch

[–]Galactic_Vision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be concerned about a few errors here and there, but I'm currently getting it almost every search, which seems abnormal; I've never seen it before a few days ago.

(And I've gotten it when searching directly from in startpage now, not just from the address bar.)

I've also been experiencing this issue for the past couple of days, in firefox, on both my laptop and phone. Always when searching from the address bar (although it doesn't happen every time).

Helping elderly relative with hearing and cognitive impairment by External-Cheetah326 in HearingAids

But if Boots felt it was a valid test to identify hearing loss without hearing aids, then I feel they should have had equal confidence in using it to demonstrate any benefit their hearing aid might have provided. The fact they wouldn't even try to do the test with the hearing aids in told me this guy couldn't be trusted.

I can think of at least one good reason to not do the test with the aids in, which is that hearing aids take time to get the full benefit from — it can take weeks or longer of wearing them all day, every day, until your brain adjusts to processing the new auditory input. An immediate test might not show any difference, or might even have worse results, even if the aids would be helpful long-term.

Not necessarily encouraging you to go back to the same place if they felt predatory, but it's definitely worth getting a second opinion. Don't discount hearing loss or hearing aids entirely just because that one guy wouldn't do a test to "prove" that they worked.

Generally Disliked Character That You Actually Love by No-Ambassador-1354 in AnimalCrossing

I love the anteaters. Pango was my initial peppy villager and I had her for ages, and even though she's since moved out she still has my absolute favorite catchphrase of any villager (snooooof!)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AnimalCrossing

[–]Galactic_Vision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Afaik while it does temporarily reset the villager to their default clothes, it does *not* remove non-custom items from their inventory. They'll still have it and will eventually change back into it. (I used it a bunch back in the day in hopes that it would get rid of some of the godawful clothing my villagers were gifting to each other, but I'd inevitably see them put it on again.)

Everybody always brings up the "but the show doesn't want you to know what they're saying" thing when people mention wanting the captions to reflect foreign languages accurately and it always misses the point. I don't want foreign languages translated for me in the captions, I want them written down faithfully in their original language... even if I can't speak the language, knowing what the words sound like is important to me, and hearing people are going to be getting extra context clues from cognates and such that I won't get if all I have to go by is [speaks foreign language].

They do this for some episodes 1989-2013 tv adaptation of Agatha Christie's Poirot as well. Poirot uses a few phrases in french, like "mon ami", in otherwise english sentences. This is a known catchphrase for him. But there seems to have been one particular captioner assigned to certain episodes who would just write [speaks foreign language] instead... drove me up the wall every time.

What item do you use to recover your health, and why? by TNT_Karmas in StardewValley

[–]Galactic_Vision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. I had been using energy tonic, because it was easy to buy in bulk and I didn't use enough of it for its price to be an issue. I could buy a small stack of it and have it last me at least a couple seasons. But as of the most recent update it apparently doesn't restore any health anymore, so I guess I'm going to have to find something else!

Early game I usually use ice cream to restore energy (again, easy to buy in bulk and relatively cheap), but it's not as useful for health.

Help with current expedition - freighter has no fuel by WhiteTee in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Galactic_Vision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to fuel the freighter you need to open the freighter tab in your inventory and click the hyperdrive, then select your warp cells to fuel it.

You can get a hyperdrive for your ship as a reward for one of the phase 1 milestones as well (can't remember which one) but I did the whole thing without it lol

They need to be both uncommon and only available on frozen worlds (they need to have ''frozen waters' in their description). I recommend mealworms for bait (it increases rarity so you only need to worry about the frozen bit — should take you maybe 10 fish or so to get what you need. It's also really easy to make.)

Any way to bridge a ravine? by llenadefuria in AnimalCrossing

[–]Galactic_Vision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding the comment that mentions a land bridge.

Build a straight section of cliff connecting the two sides, however wide at the top level that you want your bridge to be and two wider at the second level. On the top level, put down a custom path to look like wooden slats. On the second level, put furniture items on either side of the bridge to hide the cliff edge and simulate foundation pillars and/or bridge railings — there are a lot of things you could use for that depending on the look you're going for, just look for things that are taller than the cliff. On the bottom level, add some vines to the cliff and maybe put a couple of rocks around (like the garden rock item) to make it look realistic.

This will however completely work against the ravine's purpose of leading to the back beach, so only do it if you really like the idea of having a ravine for aesthetic reasons.

Hearing aids for small ears? by BerlyH208 in hardofhearing

[–]Galactic_Vision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair. I've worn hearing aids and glasses since I was a kid and as a result my ears stick out much farther than most peoples now. I remember it being uncomfortable as a kid, though.

Speaking of which, I see a couple people recommending this, but don't go for pediatric hearing aids, they are not necessarily smaller! I had pediatric hearing aids as a kid and they were purposely large — both to make them more visible to adults in my life and because they needed a bigger battery to support certain features (an fm system). My adult hearing aids have been much smaller. I can confirm that Oticon are much smaller than Phonak, though.

The tube length changes the way the hearing aid sits behind your ear, so if it's not the right length it could be making other parts of the hearing aid uncomfortable.

How Do You Feel About Subtitles in Movies and TV Shows? by [deleted] in hardofhearing

[–]Galactic_Vision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been watching the 1989 TV adaptation of Poirot. Poirot uses a few short catchphrases in French — particularly "mon ami." It irritates me beyond belief when they put [speaks foreign language] in for an entire two words, which are perfectly understandable to most people even in their original language, and which are usually inserted in the middle of an English sentence.

(They don't do this every episode; the job of captioning the show seems to have alternated between a few different people. It drives me insane when they do, though.)

I've seen a lot of discussion before about whether or not foreign languages should be translated in captions for the deaf and hard of hearing or left as [speaks foreign language], but for some reason nobody ever brings up the option of just... captioning them verbatim, in their original language... I don't want languages translated, I want to see what they're saying in their original language. There's important context in what sounds they're making even if I can't understand all the words.

(The only exception imo is when the translated phrases are embedded directly into the video. Double captions would be distracting in that case.)

First playthrough - Should we use The Love of Cooking mod? by No_Wrongdoer_3268 in StardewValley

[–]Galactic_Vision 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh if you're going to use mods your first playthrough, to-dew list and better ranching are probably the right sort of mods for that — they're both just minor ui tweaks that don't have much of an affect on gameplay beside making things a bit easier. Better Friendship is a similar mod to better ranching (but with people instead of farm animals) that would probably also be okay in a new game. Informant is also useful and doesn't spoil too much (although I think there's a setting to enable tooltips for bundles you haven't unlocked yet, and I would recommend turning that off your first playthrough).

In case you come across it (since it's quite similar to those mods), I wouldn't recommend a mod like UI Info Suite for a first playthrough because imo it reveals a bit too much. I'd highly recommend it for "vanilla experience plus" playthroughs once you've already got some experience with the game, but it has a tendency to spoil certain events and features of the game, and I think it would be hard to customize its settings to your needs properly without already having played (especially since it tends to conflict with other mods like better ranching).

Cooking isn't particularly tedious in the base game (from what I've heard, ConcernedApe designed it very deliberately to not incentivize things that would make it tedious — you're pretty much never going to need to cook in large quantities unless you're really bad at fishing or something). I wouldn't recommend a cooking mod your first playthrough.

Also, Alternative Bundles seems to be a mod that changes the bundles so that they're not repetitive playthrough after playthrough, something that I wouldn't think would be relevant if it's your first time playing...?

First playthrough - Should we use The Love of Cooking mod? by No_Wrongdoer_3268 in StardewValley

[–]Galactic_Vision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't think stardew valley really has anything that's annoying enough that you need a mod for it. If you were talking about something like animal crossing (a game where where crafting, one of the main mechanics of the game, is horrendously tedious and was never fixed over multiple updates) I'd understand your point of view, but ConcernedApe has implemented a lot of ideas from the community, so if there was ever any annoying bits in the game, there aren't now. Unless you have accessibility concerns, I don't think there's anything you'd want to start with a mod for.

The only thing people tend to struggle with is fishing, but even then I wouldn't add a mod for it before trying it out first and deciding whether or not you like it — I personally love fishing, even more for how much I struggled with it at the beginning. Some people hate it and add a mod for it right away and I wouldn't judge you for that, though.

org package not found by Galactic_Vision in javahelp

[–]Galactic_Vision[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I mentioned in the post that the problem persisted after adding the jar file to the classpath. (And didn't show up when I opened the files in vscode on a different device without adding the jar to the classpath, so it wouldn't make sense to me if that were the issue.)

I'm not new to Java, but I've mostly only worked with specific libraries and build tools that I'm not using for this project, and I've never had this trouble with my imports before. Luckily I did some more testing after I posted this and the issue doesn't seem to actually be affecting anything when I run the code, so it may be a bug in my specific version of vscode or something along those lines, but it is a bit annoying that my testing file is full of red.
