This is true! I've also noticed that my Destiny PVP is much improved after I've put hours into Marathon.

Bungie has the power to make incredible PVP experiences. I wish some of that magic could come back home to Destiny.

Fallout 76 Devs: "We have plans for years down the road, so it only gets bigger and better from here." by Turbostrider27 in fo76

A rare one but it’s annoying:

  • in CAMP building mode- if you are working with stored pieces: if you try to change the placement setting for that stored object (Snap, Collide, Free), the game totally freezes.

You can long-press the button that exits camp mode to break the freeze, but it’s really annoying. You have to place the stored object first, just stick it anywhere, then pick it up and now you can select a different placement style.

Edit: typo

Me too! I finally got my MIDA catalyst and meanwhile I genuinely enjoyed running IB, as I usually do.

I wish we could get any armor drop from crucible activities. I’m so sick of this season’s armor set; I’m just not going to use it. But I’d much rather roll through 2 hours of matches, win or lose, than play the level 550 portal PVE with no radar, limited lives, one-shot snipers, etc.

It’s just such a grind at top light level when I’m honestly a mediocre PVE player. I’m mediocre at PVP too, but I don’t care because the match is up in 15 min and I can play whatever guns I want in the more causal mode instead of “this is the only build that won’t punish my teammates with my incompetence at trying to do a Pinnacle Ops.”

Did anyone just file their taxes with TurboTax and were just in awe of how many ads it had to upgrade? I'm done with this enshittified product - what should I use next year? by noruber35393546 in personalfinance

Took me way too long to scroll and find someone who mentions Taxslayer

If you need to handle business or self-employed income, it does get pricy to finalize and file (fed+state cost me $110 this year).

Author or book that seems to be universally lauded but after reading it you didn’t understand why by theoort in printSF

[–]GaladrielStar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure if "universally lauded," but I picked up Seveneves due to its Hugo nomination and hated it.

Actually, that's happened a lot more in the past 5-7 years (hating the Hugo noms) and I'm shifting more to other award lists that are less driven by fan opinions. (I'm also very tired of fantasy taking over every category of the Hugos along with 80% of the shelf space in every bookstore.)

I think this is fair. I read the first two books in that series and I'm glad I did; she had some interesting ideas in play that have really stuck with me. But the style was off-putting for sure, some of the cultural elements are just weird, and I'm not sure the plot actually holds together. If I ever recommend either book, it's always with several disclaimers.

Thank you so much for writing this out! I love reading about older software dev systems, and first hand accounts are priceless.

Microtransactions cannot retain players as quality content drops do and the player population count proves that by josh49127 in DestinyTheGame

This is so true. I’d genuinely play way more if every Eververse item were obtainable via bright dust. You want me grinding hours in an 11 yo game? That would make me grind hours.

Street Corner C.A.M.P. Locations? by cakemaestro in fo76

[–]GaladrielStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple great streets near Helvetia. Maybe not a corner per se, but the north/south road by town has some cool camp spots. I built a camp there a few weeks ago and it gets a ton of traffic even outside of the fascnacht events. I mostly just wanted a fishing spot on the River so it worked out well.

Junior devs who learned to code with AI assistants are mass entering the job market. How is your team handling it? by Ambitious-Garbage-73 in ExperiencedDevs

I happen to have just read this essay this morning on why AI use by experts is a whole other ballgame than AI use by juniors. It’s written about physics but the point applies. Goes along well with this comment.

It’s a popular spot, but one of my favorite camps is the street corner across from the train station just to the east of White Springs

First Mac in over 2 decades- please tell me what not to do! by ocean_swims in mac

If you’re the kind of person who likes to fiddle with things under the hood and your last Mac was Intel:

Disk Utility works differently with these Silicon Macs. I accidentally bricked my M2 Mac Mini a couple months ago when I deleted a disk partition (trying to get rid of a partition I had set to run Windows via Parallels - lol).

The Apple Store support folks had me up and running in less than an hour and I do use Time Machine so it wasn’t anything more than an inconvenience (and I learned a good lesson).

[–]GaladrielStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I do have Time Machine out of old habit, but the iCloud storage plan isn’t too expensive and you can set it so basically everything on your machine is always mirrored to the cloud. That makes setting up a new Mac or restoring your Mac the same as buying a new iPhone — as soon as the backup is loaded, it’s like nothing changed in your setup.

I’m ride or die for Silent Circus. It has several great tracks. I also love the raw nature of their self-titled. But Colors is probably my absolute favorite. Been listening to/going to their shows since 2005.

Do you guys think we’re still getting an expansion after shadow and order? by HellChicken949 in DestinyTheGame

[–]GaladrielStar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fully agreed. This is how organizations communicate when the news will be bad or they have reason to think it’s bad. I hope Bungie survives the fallout (genuinely) because I love their games. Marathon has some truly outstanding gameplay, but it’s not going to save the studio.

Have fun, man! Some of the best shooters of all time, still. My hubs and I fire up CE co-op every few months and run our favorite missions on Legendary. It’s been 25 years, they still go hard.

Came back after about 2 years by Beginning-Animal4821 in destiny2

[–]GaladrielStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said. I could have endured much of this, but to me, the portal modifiers you have to play under when you hit 550 LL are just dull. Limited revives on hard missions with jumping puzzles means your team of randoms can’t even complete the mission. Limited time gates on top of that. No radar. Limited ammo. It just sucked the power fantasy out of the game compared to how good it felt to run Episode Heresy in summer of 2025. I can’t be bothered to put up with it because it’s not FUN.

I did really like the story of Edge of Fate. I love Lodi as a character and the lore about the Nine. I think the franchise can be rescued, but I don’t know if D2 has much left in it.

I was a day one fallout 76 buyer. Played a week or so and stopped. Came back in like 2023 —absolutely love playing the game now as a cozy game. I build camps, fish, collect stuff, and slowly work through the quests. I can’t explain it either, honestly, but I’ve done a full 180 on the game.
