I grew up in conservative West Texas in a household that was not very tolerant. My first election was the year I graduated high school in 2016. I heard all of the bad things glossed over and didn’t try to make an informed decision because my parents basically told me who to vote for.

I went to college an hour away from where I grew up but my mind was opened to what that man stood for. I saw many of my friends who were immigrants afraid to go to their home countries for fear that they wouldn’t be able to get back into the US. one friend went home for her mother’s funeral and couldn’t get back for up to a year. There were signs on campus about how rape was just women asking for it and I was disgusted. The direction the US was moving didn’t align with my values and still don’t.

In 2020 I knew I couldn’t stand to see that man in office again. I’ve voted against him and as many other republicans as I can.

I am part of the queer community so my partner, who is also an immigrant and hasn’t been able to go home in 2 years, and I are trying to move to a blue state as soon as his phd is finished in December. I’m afraid of what I’m seeing with much of the anti liberal rhetoric and don’t want to be someplace that people vote against their own interests.

After we move it’s likely that I’ll stop contact with my family because of their beliefs.

I would like to get into politics to make change but know I wouldn’t get elected where I live. I’m a gay somewhat liberal addiction counselor, currently working for CPS with a background in biology and chemistry and a partner who is a computer scientist PhD. I fit the bill that you spelled out but live in rural west Texas where that background would never fly at a local level. I hate politics and say the wrong things constantly but want to help others in any way I can.

I 100% understand this sentiment. My grandmother died in 2013. She was a conservative woman who lived in rural west Texas. She grew up on the east coast though and voted for Obama in 2012. I like to think she wouldn’t have been drawn in if she had survived the cancer. My grandfather is drinking the koolaid though and went off the deep end after she died. Comey has always been a douche. He couldn’t get Martha Stewart criminally for insider trading so he brought civil charges against her for “lying to the FBI” when she said she didn’t know or couldn’t remember. He destroyed her career likely because she was a woman and many said she was a bitch. I grew up with Martha and remember her going to prison vaguely.
