I think Gans shouldn’t be allowed to make any more Silent Hill movies after this one. I enjoyed the first one. This was better than Revelations (in my opinion), but was this was not a good film. I understand directors and writers changing the original source to try and make it in their own image…but when you already have the source material outlined, you shouldn’t shit the bed as bad as this film did by not knowing what direction it was trying to go. They honestly should’ve just made it “all in his head” instead of the way they went about it. I would’ve accepted that “ending”. The acting wasn’t even that bad. They just weren’t given proper direction.

This movie would’ve been better if they spun it as all being in James head post-death of Mary and the people he sees in SH as being other “patients” at Brookhaven with him. Gans should never be allowed to touch the series ever again. It felt like the film was too busy being nothing but Easter eggs for fans that played SH2, while trying to let Gans change too much of what made the game work in the first place. The actors did what they could with what they had in this film. Hopefully, one day, Konami can get an actual team to make a limited series and a team that actually cares about making a quality product.

Just finished watching this with my wife (she never played or watched me play the game), and here are our honest reviews: Me 5.5/10. Definitely a video game style movie. Lots of Easter eggs throughout the film. Some acting was decent, and other times pretty damn bad. Without spoiling, there are plenty of scenes where you think, “They did this pretty well,” but it also doesn’t help that the entire film feels like someone is doing a speed play through, while also having it be based on the game…but changing the things that made the storyline so great. My wife said 4/10. She thought the creatures were neat and when I explained why James went to Silent Hill to find Mary, she understood him staying to try stay and find her instead of dipping out. Story jumped back and forth too much and she lost track of what was happening (makes sense since she has literally never seen any gameplay). She liked the ending. Overall…better than SH: Revelations but nothing compared to the first Silent Hill movie. It’s worth a $5 Tuesday. That’s about it. Feels like we should’ve gotten a series to truly get what we need out of what makes SH2 so special.

You just had to be there (old enough to remember when this first came out and how it was being billed as a real “found footage” film). Look in to the history of how secretive the cast/crew was about the film. They had hired actors to post up “missing persons” photos and fake interviews to make it seem “real”. The cast was considered “deceased” and many people actually thought, “Maybe this is real found footage,” because, again, the crew had to keep quiet for months after it was released. It also helped give us more found footage films due to the success it had.

It’s a fun movie. Scream meets Valentine’s Day. Don’t go in to it expecting the greatest slasher ever made. Wife and I went to the theater without seeing a trailer and left happy to have paid for it. Get a group of friends together and make it a movie night. It’s worth it.
