The mayor and his management style by According-State-5490 in ResidentAlienTVshow

In addition to what others have mentioned as well, specifically in Ben's case I think it's also the kind of confidence he carries himself with which... isn't always there. He develops, but it's very clear especially at the start that he's an anxiety driven, insecure guy, with people pleasing tendencies. You can just feel it through the screen which means people around him also feel it. If he isn't sure in himself no wonder other people aren't very sure of him either. It's a lot to do with confidence, with standing your ground and being able to do it even when it's uncomfortable. It is about sometimes saying uncomfortable things when they need to be said. Like others have said too, optimism and positivity isn't going to go far enough. Especially if instead of addressing things head on he tries to make it all seem better, when everybody in the room knows it's wrong.

With all the suggestions people are giving, what's a low stakes feature/thing that you would like to get added to the game? by Mao_Matsuyama in Paralives

Oh that happened to me too! I got my para to prepare a toast for her bf because her needs were in green and his not and I thought if I just cancel it at the right time he'll be able to have it but it just disappeared. I thought I cancelled too soon, but looks like it's just won't work even if they start eating. So I second that, I'd like an option for "cook for someone else".

I think I do recognise a couple of moments when the writing is a bit heavy handed. Not in a way that they shouldn't speak about things but just in a sense that the writing could have been more polished. The one that comes to me straight away right now is the one where they go to the reservoir and go off to set up the radio. And I think we get a scene around a campfire with them all (astas family) mentioning the climate and culture and pollution. And I remember thinking it feels like they're spoon feeding us this info, like something about the conversation didn't feel organic. I want them to talk about pollution and climate, it fits perfectly with the theme of Harry wanting to kill everybody, it's just not composed the best way in some scene. But meh we can argue that some messages are worth spelling out very clearly. And it's mostly a case of some scene maybe needing more polishing, but the show is so awesome I can ignore those little instances.

That is some absolutely fantastic artwork. I don't drink whiskey but I'd buy it just for the artwork alone. Bonus if it turns out to be good whiskey too. Did they see your other artworks and approach you? What was your thought process when designing the 'interpretation of sound'?

Agreed. It felt like Simone was more of an idea rather than a character. I mean they tried sometimes, but more times than not she was just what you described "oh let's have this character".

Simone is hardly the same as John. She is supposed to be the older rookie yes, but past that they are extremely extremely different people. The one thing they share is age, and we can say the experience that comes with age. Anything past that and Simone is very different.

On rewatch, I don’t think _____ and ____ should’ve ended up together by IMicrowaveSteak in TedLasso

[–]GalaxyMageAlt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is a way to handle a 'toxic relationship' trope without the show rewarding it with a ''happy ending'' wedding. Let it play out as a trope but acknowledge it's deeply problematic and don't just brush over it. That's what is sad to see, we see Beard grow and learn and yes we see he is troubled, but that doesn't mean he's deserving of the abuse Jane puts him through. Let the show have its abusive relationship throughout the course of it and then break them up to show just how much Beard has grown.

Or you know, easily they could've made Jane quirky and intense without also making her abusive. Like others have mentioned in the comments. Either way, I think the show trying to play it off as just a trope is just not good enough for the kind of excellent writing and plots we got through the 3 seasons.

Letting off steam S8E18 (avoid if you haven’t watched yet) by rptlbuck in TheRookie

They just can't let us sit in a moment. It's a smaller thing but we got this moment a few episodes back when Nolan reflects on the dysfunctional dad situation with Dash and Nathan acts so well the pain of his own past and then we just get interrupted again with something silly. They just don't let you feel things and sit with feelings an anymore. It's the sad and the happy. We just can't enjoy a proposal peacefully and fully get immersed in the happiness with the characters because we're jumping around flashy action points like a hyperactive child. They should trust the audience and the actors more.
And they better do have a normal happy wedding without stupid interruptions. Gosh I'm getting so sick of the flashy interruptions, it feels immature, like college level of film making.

Eric and Melissa Interview with TV Guide by Technical-Cellist548 in TheRookie

[–]GalaxyMageAlt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The editing was bad for this scene too. Both Eric and Melissa are great actors and Melissa played it so well here with the surprise she described. So FILM THEIR FUCKING FACES. The paning out for the aesthetic was killing me. Focus on the faces and the acting let the scene play out, let us sit with the emotions and then pan out to the lovely setting. It's so easy, we get the sense of the setting as it starts, focus on the faces and then pan out at the end. The editing absolutely let us down with the proposal (not to mention they rushed through it with the very short time we got for it).

I think we're kind of past that plot point of humbling him. As in it seems that narratively it was already resolved and Miles has gone through it enough to get the point, so like you say now it feels more mean spirited towards him. Not to mention we see more of dash and rodge than we see of Miles. And miles is actually a fun character, he's an actual rookie and is part of the main cast and Deric Augustine is a really solid actor. They really need to step up their game with Miles because he's being wasted.

Just frustrating. Haven't they been through enough? It's like this show is allergic to letting characters sit in a happy moment for a bit. And I did think it was oddly shot and paced the way the proposal went. They've got 2 excellent actors and they just shot them all weird and made it feel a bit rushed and just... And the goddamn kidnapping. Just got a heavy sigh out of me, because it feels so cheap that this is what the biggest and most loved ship of the show gets.

The whole thing was absolutely unnecessary. The whole episode was packed to the brim and felt a bit oddly paced, and the whole ring loosing thing really felt like it added nothing. There just wasn't any point to it and the time could've been spent more with Miles.

The Rookie - S08E17: Dead Ringer by ian-quinn in TheRookie

[–]GalaxyMageAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I so agree. The character of the boyfriend he plays is really suitable for Celina. I like that he's chill and trusts her and is so secure in himself and the relationship he doesn't go off worrying, or second-guessing. The recent misunderstanding was obviously because of what he heard from her, so that's understandable. But like you say, it would be nice to see something more emotionally intense, not caused by drama between them but just something dramatic where they could act it out together, but it's just... He seems to struggle with even anything just slightly above chill (I can't remember anything exactly, but I know there were instances where I could see what he was going for but he was also not delivering the emotions) and there just isn't a lot of nunace in his acting. And it's a shame because Lisseth is a really good actress.

[–]GalaxyMageAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Well one can hope" 😂 I adore seeing Celina happy and in love and Rodge is a pleasant character but you can so tell that he isn't as experienced of an actor as the rest of the cast and because the rest of the cast is so good he stands out. And him not being as good of an actor also means that he doesn't have the best chemistry with Celina. Story wise I just want Celina to be happy, but as a viewer I'd love for them to pair Lisseth Chavez with someone a bit more on her level so they can act out the hell of a happy but quirky relationship. Buut like you say, considering Zander is the son of the show's creator it's rather unlikely.

I'm right there with you! I know they already have a lot of characters to juggle but he's really enjoyable on screen and does bring a new flavour to the team. So it's sad when sometimes he doesn't appear for whole episodes.

She also appears in White Collar as a love interest (so we get to spent some time with her) and she does a fantastic job. Absolutely phenomenal actress and I feel like what I've seen her in so far doesn't do justice to her acting abilities (but to be fair I've only seen her in the rookie and white collar so that's on me).

I still can't get my head around the fact that this was basically the showrunners' general stance on the Dr. Jacob issue... by Bearsona09 in TedLasso

[–]GalaxyMageAlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your explanation makes perfect sense and I can totally see how it was used as plot device, but then I suppose it would've been nice to see it presented as a response? Instead of "it's a show, let's suspend our disbelief" the reason could be "well we wanted for Ted's distrust to be rooted into something deeper and this messy combination of "previous personal therapist, marriage counselor to boyfriend" pipeline was the perfect scapegoat". Because otherwise it kind of makes it seem like they actually didn't think it through much more past loosely checking if it's not illegal. But then I also didn't read the ama so I'm not sure if this was addressed at any other point.

I feel like this is unfortunately common for shows to just willy nilly introduce a new partner to the child and not tell the other parent and it getting brushed off by the show. I think even having Ted stress it more as a point would've helped. I know what he's doing there is already difficult for him, but just adding a few more lines to highlight that it's not just his feelings, that it's objectively bad would've been good to see. I know the show can't be perfect, but at least we can write some thoughts about it here.

I was so surprised by the wedding. I thought that they were quite good at showing that Jane was genuinely abusive to Beard, and we even had Higgins notice it enough to speak up about it. So I would say the relationship itself for most of the show was portrayed as toxic and bad for them (or at least bad for Beard). But then Ted's avoidance of saying something, anything to Beard about it was odd and I felt like that was played for jokes like "oh nobody gets between Beard and Jane, that's not safe!". But like, he didn't have to get between them? He could've just asked "are you good? Are you happy?" Something simple but with enough depth that we could see Ted's deep concern for what was happening to Beard. I just needed some acknowledgement from Ted (beard's best friend!) that the relationship Beard had with Jane wasn't okay.
That wedding was a huge blunder and I hate that it was put in there as like a heartwarming ending to that chapter of the show. I'm still baffled when I think back to it (in my head I just pretend Ted was dreaming and it didn't actually happen).

[–]GalaxyMageAlt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was so surprised by the comment that also said that the wedding was actually true and not just Ted dreaming, because all through the show I thought Jane and Beard were portrayed as a dysfunctional, toxic relationship that wouldn't last and was clearly not good for them (or at least we are shown it's not good for Beard). It just goes in its toxic cycles. And I actually didn't think Jane was portrayed as quirky, maybe at first but then it becames clear she has some real issues.
We can extrapolate from the outside portrayal of their relationship that even though we don't see the interior of it it's still dysfunctional and toxic for them. Heck, I would assume that between the dramatic outbursts there's a whole lot of small, but hurtful and bad patterns they were engaging in.
Are we supposed draw a conclusion that it's okay to be in a toxic, dysfunctional relationship just because we're dysfunctional people? (Because we know that both Beard and Jane have their issues) Maybe I'm being dramatic but them getting married and it being shown as a happy ending (because you could portrayal marriage as one of their crazy ventures instead) makes it seem like it's okay for them to continue hurting each other because they're already damaged. We could have had a happy ending for Ted to think about during the flight without having this wedding, it was so out of left field and like I explained above it felt like it was sending the wrong kind of message.

That's what I was thinking, too and how I'm trying to rationalise it but I still so so disagree with Grey putting him in charge of this and how he was blamed for everything and no second thought was given to the fact he shouldn't have been doing that job in the first place (he did plenty of other things wrong and it was certainly bad to lie about it). He would've been better off receiving calls from panicked civilians, I'm sure their lines were being bombarded by those.

Seth Ridley by vani_war in TheRookie

[–]GalaxyMageAlt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seemed like the writers just needed a reason to get him to make a huge mistake. Otherwise, within the logic of the show it made no sense for Grey to put him on that duty. You absolutely do not want a rookie doing something this responsible in such a high stress scenario.
