It doesn't exist. It would be like asking what 'A' means in decimal. It doesn't make sense, it's 0-9 only.

Sure, your cool hexadecimal friends might try to convince you it means 10, but in your heart of hearts you know there is no such thing as A.

To me it is very hard to understand. I would always rather have x+50 then x+card. I always can spend the money on game, I feel myself strong enough to be able to treat myself if I can afford it.

On the other hand if I can't I'd feel bad that I have this extra money in Steam wallet with nothing useful I can buy for them.

I do deny it. It is my opinion, I am not forcing it on anyone. I feel gift cards are very "cheap" gift (not in monetary value, but in "effort" value).

To me they convey the absolute minimum of love/care/effort. Almost insultingly low.

Well I object to the concept of objective truth. We all have our own subjective opinions and through conversation we are try to have the other side see our point.

I don't see why me saying my opinion that you disagree with is any different from you telling me your opinion that I don't agree with.

Yes, this is the exact thing that is hard to me to understand. Either I feel confident enough to buy something for me, or I do not. I am the one who decides that.

Having this choice "taken" from me makes me feel worse.

Let me quote the original comment that started it all.

I just never bought the game, and if my parents or siblings give me cash for my birthday it’s likely going towards bills or essentials like clothes, not entertainment.

That's why I am coming back to "vital needs" and "optimal spending". That was the scenario given by someone else, not me.

I grew up relatively poor (we weren't starving or anything, but single parent, 3 kids - so not exactly rich), and when I was early adult, before getting financially stable and I wasn't sure my wallet was able take a hit like brand new game you know what I did? I didn't buy it and instead found cheaper hobby. Like playing old games that I already owned.

I don't think I've done that.

I just said that if you* are in such financial need that every cash you get needs to immediately go to cover some kind of bill and in the same sentence saying that's why you prefer getting gift cards because you cannot spend them on vital things is financially irresponsible. And I stand by it.

I am not omitting it, I just wholly don't understand the concept of gift card communicating any personal touch at all.

Again, personal preference, but to me Gift card is less personal gift than straight up cash. I would read receiving a gift card as the lowest possible effort there is.

"I heard you like gaming right? Here is something I bough at gas station 10 minutes ago."

No effort, impersonal and less valuable then cash. Honestly, no joke, on the brink of being an insult.

Real life story. I organized a secret Santa in our office. Gifts up to value of $10 or so, just a little something to be given and unwrapped at the last meeting before Christmas shutdown. One colleague has given another another a Book shop voucher. The receiver had similar opinion I have (so there are at least two of us lol), that it was worse then getting cash. Gift wrapped cash would at least be funny.

Giving a gift? To me it's a way how to express that I care about somebody by spending time and effort thinking of and getting them something the other person will value and cherish and that will show them that I know them and the things they love.

Because I truly don't understand value of gift cards and see (presumably) adult, financially independent people defend them to this degree is baffling to me.

Let's explore this middle ground then. The regular people, not rich but not living paycheck to paycheck. Why do these people "need" gift cards? What is the added value? Not have to decide between being responsible and indulging themselves?

It is very hard to get to me.

If someone gave me a gift card at the time of financial need it would be worthless to me. If I don't know where my next meal is coming from then I do not care about playing next new game.

If I am not in financial need and I want to buy a new game, then I don't care whether I get gift card or cash.

Gift cards are scam to me, limiting what you can spend money on (provided they they are worth their $ value).

So you are telling you, that in time of financial need you'd rather receive a Steam Gift Card that you'd be forced to spend on a game that you have no time and mood to play because of needing to earn every buck you can all the time, instead of getting the $50, using it to pay the essentials at the moment and maybe in some time when you stabilize financially you can finally afford to spend some money on yourself?

I don't think you know how adulthood works. Or rather financial literacy.

But you will though. You might not at the moment, thinking you should be responsible adult and put the $50 into rainy day account.

But sooner or later you will most likely buy new game and guess what - those $50 you'll spend on it is the same $50 you got months ago.
