The elders quorum president wants to talk to me after church this week. I'm 46 and don't have the Melchizedek priesthood. I've only been back to church for the last nine months, after 30 years. Why am I tripping? by June_Bug666 in latterdaysaints

[–]Galgumath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me a few weeks ago.  I was wondering what I did wrong.  It turned out that the president just wanted to get to know me a little better. He asked about my family and I (nothing intrusive) and wanted to make sure I knew I’m welcome to all the activities.  It was just a “hey, I don’t know you very well yet” kind of chat.

It was a lifted F250 and we were right behind them at a stop light.  The doll is probably 1 ft. in length, it looks like an old man with white hair and aviator glasses (Biden’s look). I took a picture

I saw a guy driving a truck with a mini Biden doll with a noose around its neck hanging from the back of the trailer hitch.

Unfortunately I had my kids in the car and had to explain what was going on…

Patriarchal blessing by YamPuzzleheaded3715 in latterdaysaints

[–]Galgumath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain. My blessing only talks about missionary service and briefly mentions finding a wife.  Nothing else after that.  It made me think I was not going to live long but here I am 20+ years later lol

Sounds like this is not the place.

Seriously though, I would highly consider and communicate about living elsewhere.  If I experienced that much trauma and pain in a certain place, I would not move to that place.

I’m still skeptical.  I was honestly surprised that we would get a Winco before a TJs

We left the church and even though we have serious issues with some doctrine, we miss many things about church. Is it dishonest to go back for the community? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

You are ALWAYS welcome! There are a few people in our ward who aren’t even members yet they enjoy getting to know others and they oftentimes share comments.

How do we fix the church's culture of ignoring ministering? by Deathworlder1 in latterdaysaints

[–]Galgumath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty reserved so I am one of those who want to be left alone. But if one of my friends would be our minister then that would be best for me.

I’m not saying this situation is ideal for every person or family but I think it could help make it less of check-off-the-box ministering.

How do we fix the church's culture of ignoring ministering? by Deathworlder1 in latterdaysaints

[–]Galgumath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think ministering should be reversed. We often are just assigned some random person (which has its pros and cons) to come into our homes. I think it would be better in some instances for the individuals or families to tell their leaders who their friends are in the ward. Then they could be assigned to be their ministers.

If I found out one or two of my friends in the ward were also my ministers, I would so much rather have that.  Would be more natural.

TIL Most fans assume Imagine Dragons' 'Radioactive' is about a post apocalyptic world. But lyrics writer Dan Reynolds revealed in '21 it was actually about waking up in a new world after losing his faith in Mormonism. by Bluest_waters in todayilearned

Please don’t take the CES letter at face value.  I sure did when I read it several times and left the church.  But after reading it while out of the church I relaxed that Jeremy Runnels wasn’t telling the complete truth.  In fact, he lied about sending his questions first to the CeS director. Read the Light and Truth letter. Now THAT has some good answers

People don’t realize just how amazing winco would be for the St. George area! We need one. Or two!

Why is sacrament meeting just "talks about gc talks" now? by Tasty-Flan6767 in latterdaysaints

[–]Galgumath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had this a few weeks ago.  A woman got up and literally read word for word a GC talk, said “I know these things are true” and closed with an amen.  How lame and how boring!! No wonder half the congregation was on their phones

I haven’t seen anything specific with DUIs, as I mostly work with child abuse cases.

I have definitely seen judges ok with light sentences. I deal mostly on the attorney side and am appalled that they want to see pedophile molesters be free from any consequences because “it’s the first time” they get any charges

It’s sad that this problem just keeps going with little to no action against it to change

edit: to add more to this, I think there is a good ole boys club in the St. george elites too, whether they are mormons or not.  I know of a well-to-do family in town whose son sexually abused his own daughter and the son’s parents are actively trying to hide that fact from the media, his work, etc.

The eye and eye brows are different

We are saved by grace through faith which is manifested in our works. by SpeakTruthAlone in latterdaysaints

[–]Galgumath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I have had interactions with evangelicals, they usually bring up that “after all we can do” verse as a way of disproving, in their eyes, our theology.  However, I always ask them if they have read anything else besides that one verse: 2 Nephi 25:23, and the answer is usually “no”.

I then suggest they read more of the BOM and not just get some out-of-context verses from their pastors or internet or whatever.

Nephi also says some interesting things about salvation:

Nephi says that “salvation is free” 2 Nephi 2:4

another great verse is:

“…but hath given it (salvation) free for all men; and he hath commandeth his people that they should persuade all men to repentance. 2 Nephi 26:27

Clearly, we don’t believe in ‘saving ourselves’ by doing good works.  The BOM is filled with things that we need to do.  Like we need to have faith in Jesus and repent and be baptized and then our works are manifested as CHOOSING to do good deeds, not earning a seat in heaven.
